I am sure most of us at some point have that one special game that we know the quality is below par, but we love it anyway.

What is that special game for you? Why do you love it? Why do you not recommend it?

For me that game is Death Stranding. I know that this game is generally well received by its fanbase but I still find that one difficult to recommend.

I love the game because I think when the game gets going it REALLY gets going. Carrying packages across long distances in increasingly difficult ways is incredibly fun and lends itself to some very interesting scenarios that evolve out of protecting your cargo. I love building roads in games in general and the subgame of building roads to let you deliver heavy cargo with trucks is so satisfying.

I do not recommend it because 80% of the time the game is incredibly boring and Hideo Kojima seriously needs someone else to edit his stories. Early on in his career he allowed his works to be edited and they are so much better for it. After he stopped letting people edit his works (MGS4 and onwards) there is a sharp decline in story quality.

Genshin Impact. I'm generally invulnerable to FOMO so despite the gacha mechanics I've had a great time with it. The world is beautiful and enjoyable to explore, and the combat is fun. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who hasn't played a gacha game unless they're already disciplined against gacha tactics though.

Death Stranding

I feel it's a genuinely great game but even I struggled to get through the opening chapters. The game really didn't click for me until I unlocked a few tools and gadgets that made traversal a bit more forgiving

Flower, Sun & Rain.

A sequel to The Silver Case which is a classic Suda 51 game. But the result is imagine if Deadly Premonition was even more poorly made.

That said what made deadly premonition so charming is even moreso here. Including a bizarre and psychopathic protagonist.

Speaking of The Silver Case another one is Times Infinity.

A this is a clearly passionate homage to The Silver Case. I adore its weird characters and weird world. It's a difficult recommend because it's an extremely small project with very little polish though. I still recommend giving it a chance though.

I adore Sonic R because it is such a vibe.

It is a weak game because it is blatantly made out of leftover assets for Sonic Adventure. Only five levels is not nearly enough and it is way too easy.

I think American Truck Simulator would be terribly boring if you played it legitimately.

Instead of playing it like Carmageddon the way I do.

I also exploited a bug and now have $2 billion in game. I have as much money as Tim Cook of Apple, and yet I'm still driving a truck?

Not so sure about that. Sonic R wasn't made by Sonic Team. You might be thinking of the 3D world in Sonic Jam, which was probably made out of an early build of Adventure.

The engine for Sonic R was originally made for an F1 racing game, which explains why Sonic kinda handles like a car lol.

Sonic R - Release Date: 18 November 1997
Sonic Adventure - Release Date: December 23, 1998 (JP) & September 9, 1999 (US)

So I doubt Sonic Reused assets from Sonic Adventure (especially as Sonic R was released for the Saturn & Adventure the Dreamcast), but you might be right about Sonic Jam as they were released in the same year for the Saturn.

The aptly named Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories is objectively a terrible game, with AI that changes its cards on the fly to beat whatever you have, a poorly executed gameplay system, all the best cards locked behind an all but impossible purchase price, and a lethal nonstop boss rush at the endgame. But I loved it at the time and sank possibly thousands of hours into it.

Ever since my save file was deleted somehow I can't bring myself to ever play it again though, because despite what it does right, by all rights it isn't a good game.

Forbidden memories is a frustrating but honestly fun game. It needs a sequel.

-Needs more spell and trap cards.
-AI that takes advantage of the fusion and card cycling system instead of one card bombs.
-Needs effect monsters

Not saying it needs to be the mess that modern YGO but it would add some necessary dynamics beyond just make a bigger dude than the other dude.

I don't know if you've played it or not, but Duelists of the Roses on PS2 uses the same kind of card fusion system as Forbidden Memories, and has monster effects. It expands on everything Forbidden Memories got right, and adds its own spin with turn based strategy battles on a grid. It's incredibly fun and I still go back to it from time to time.

I have played Duelists of the Roses and I didn't appreciate it at the time but I'll give it another look. Having a tactical grid system may be what Forbidden Memories needs.

Well Sonic Adventure started development on the Saturn before switching to the Dreamcast. Sonic Team likely used some of what was done on the Saturn as the basis for the 3D world in Sonic Jam.

And I like Sonic R as well. The controls are kinda weird but they're actually pretty easy to learn, and the level design was really interesting and unique. It really could have used more content though.

I played this a lot back in the day as well and yeah.... it sucks. The game is insanely grindy and the AI cheats really brazenly. It had a really cool atmosphere to it though and the OST was amazing.

Hey I thought of more. Snatcher and Policenauts.

They are both great games. However, they are both interactive visual novels. Probably some of the first (good) games in that genre so some people might not be interested in those. And they are difficult to play these days, especially because you need to add a translation patch to play Policenauts in English.

Actually I would probably still recommend these games to others so nvm

I have a lot of love for Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, even though it is brazenly incomplete and unpolished. I think most people are probably better off watching someone else play it so they can skip through the grinding than playing it themselves just to see what it's about if they're curious.

The SNES game Lord of the Rings Vol 1 is genuinely not good, but if you can get multiple players it dramatically improves the experience and the music is absurdly high quality for the time.

I also like the SNES version of Dungeon Master despite its terrible controls due to the music it had that other versions did not.

Scroll of Taiwu

It's a legitimately engaging open-world cultivation sim game with a bunch of different genres of minigames to it. It's also unnecessarily complicated and requires a ton of Chinese cultural knowledge to actually make sense of it all. Translation is ass and it's been in EA for fucking ever now. Maybe I could recommend it to Lok because he's already waded through Amazing Cultivation Simulator but that's about it for PotD
