I made a similar topic like 6 years ago, but I don't remember the results. I've always hated the right angle explanation, it makes no sense.

Where's the option for Belief/Faith?

Vampires are harmed by Crosses because of the belief/faith put in the object by millions of people. They would similarly be repelled by the star and crescent, the star of david, the wheel of Dharma, the eye of horus, and Mjolnir.

I've heard of the right angle thing before, but didn't know where it came from.

Agree that it's dumb as hell.

Most of my Vampire knowledge comes from Castlevania. And Alucard definitely uses crosses.

The Castlevania show used the right angle explanation...even though it also confirms that Heaven/Hell are real and God (or at least some higher power) exists.

The right angle thing is honestly fine and consistent with the odd things in vampire lore.

Like to me it's the same kinda thing as Vampires have to be invited in and they have a compulsion to count rice or whatever. They just have weird quirks a lot of the time.

the "invited in" thing seems to strike me as pretty distinct from the more random elements; it seems to tie with the metaphor of vampires being seducers

The best use of the threshold thing will always be Angel leaning against the barrier as they're investigating some scumbag's apartment and suddenly he just falls inside and they're like "Guess he's dead now."

I guess so. Either way. Vampires have a hodgepodge of random stuff they're weak against and mental compulsions they're susceptible to. Like garlic is a classic that I didn't mention this is just "what."

I think "weird reaction to some random thing that makes no sense" vs "is holy" are both probably fair game with respect to vampires and you can find many examples of each. I have no problem with either explanation (I voted they wouldn't care about holy symbols ftr)

I forget what show it was where a communist was able to repel them with a hammer and sickle but that was funny enough for this to be my preferred explanation

Oh I know.

I guess my point is vampires have two types of weaknesses.

1. Random shit
2. "Holy" stuff

Cross fits into the former or the latter based on explanation (right angles or holy symbol) and stuff from both categories gets discarded at the whims of the writer.

Sunlight is probably the only near universal weakness. After that you're kinda just using a grab bag of the ones you like.

If I was writing a vampire story, it would turn out that they feared crosses because the progenitor vampire had been crucified as a mortal before being raised as an undead, and the fact that crosses had become religious symbols was pure coincidence.

Best use of crosses is Salems Lot. Yes, crosses repel them, but it's based on the faith of the person wielding it. When Barlow challenges the Father to put it down and face him based on his faith and he refuses, it loses its power.
