Neither. They deserve properly designed bike paths. Forcing them to use something inherently designed for a different mode of transport makes zero sense and kinda pisses me off. I don't even ride a bike, but I'm as mad when I have to share the road with a bike as they are at having to share it. Riding your bicycle to the corner shouldn't be a life-threatening experience on unsafe roads.

You think they're a bigger danger to pedestrians on a sidewalk than cars driving by at 45mph or more?

Bike bumps pedestrian = Ow that hurts.
Bike comes into contact with car = Lucky if you're not dead or horribly mangled.

while I generally agree with your logic, if the bike is going fast enough it can still cause serious injury to a pedestrian

Depends on the street in question. In my city some streets don't have sidewalks, in which case it's the street by default. Most other streets it's supposed to be on the street regardless, except for younger kids. But there's also a highway that runs through the city which has an extra wide sidewalk which is also designated as a bike path, so for that it's the sidewalk. There's another highway that runs through where the sidewalk isn't designated as a bike path, and that one is much more mixed. Back when I had a bike, I would generally go on the sidewalk on that one, but I also only went down it when it was mostly empty.

I used an AI to help summarize why it's more dangerous to have a bike on the sidewalk than the road so it's easier to understand.

Increased Collision Risk
Bicyclists on sidewalks are at a higher risk of collisions, especially at intersections and driveways:

- Cyclists on sidewalks are 1.8 times more likely to be involved in an accident at intersections compared to those riding on the road[1].
- 42% of accidents where a motorist turns left in front of a cyclist involve sidewalk riders[1].
- Nearly 50% of accidents involving motorists exiting alleys or driveways involve sidewalk cyclists[1].

Visibility Issues
Drivers are less likely to notice or anticipate cyclists on sidewalks:

- Motorists typically look for pedestrian traffic on sidewalks, not faster-moving bicycles[4].
- Cyclists on sidewalks often have poor sight lines and reduced predictability[6].

Legal and Practical Concerns
Riding on sidewalks presents several other issues:

- It's often illegal to ride on sidewalks, especially for adults[5].
- Sidewalks are not designed for bicycle speeds, with uneven surfaces, sharp turns, and obstacles[4].
- Cyclists on sidewalks may conflict with pedestrians, creating unsafe conditions for both groups[3].

Safety on Roads
While riding on roads may feel less safe, it's generally safer for several reasons:

- Cyclists are more visible to drivers when on the road[4].
- Roads have more consistent surfaces and fewer obstacles[4].
- Proper bike infrastructure, like protected bike lanes, can significantly reduce accident risks[7].

Conclusion
The safest option is to have dedicated infrastructure for each mode of transportation: sidewalks for pedestrians, protected bike lanes for cyclists, and roads for motor vehicles[5]. When such infrastructure is not available, cyclists are generally safer riding on the road while following traffic laws and safety practices.

Lol what a load of shit.

Bicycles belong in bike lanes. If that's not available, it depends on the sidewalk. If it's a broad sidewalk with plenty of room, then they can be on the sidewalk. If it's a narrow sidewalk, then they should be on the street.

Your logic doesn't flow here. Yes, bikes are more of a danger to pedestrians on sidewalks than if they were on the road.

And bikes are cars are safe on roads together if all participants are safe, risk averse and aware drivers/cyclists. Not exactly difficult to understand.

I'm probably going to be one of the few that thinks that bikes should be on the sidewalk. At least in low walking locations. If your somewhere with high foot traffic like New York, assuming there is no bike lane, then either the side of the road, or on the road.

My opinion - cycle lanes, or on the road.

I have a bicycle and a car, and whilst I think it's absolutely fine for kids to cycle on the pavement when they haven't yet mastered the green cross code and general self-awareness, if you're old enough to ride a bike that can go faster than cars in low-traffic neighbourhoods then you belong on the road.

Where there are shared pavements (between pedestrians and cyclists) I fully understand and agree why some cyclists would prefer to ride on the road instead. As a driver yes it can be a bit annoying, but my 20 seconds of inconvenience is irrelevant compared to that cyclist doing 20-30mph on a pavement and risking other peds.

That being said, there are some roads that pretty much every cyclist avoids.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/XY5fPyNtFBv2MEcz7
This is a 60mph road - and no, it's not one-way. It's rare to see cyclists there for simple self-preservation reasons.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/iVDSgpkFx1CPTLr48
This is a 70mph road and whilst occasionally you see the odd lycra warrior on there, it's also generally avoided because it's pretty much a motorway.

Laws are going to vary per county. In mine if there's a bike lane you're supposed to use it. If not you can use either but if you're on the sidewalk you're supposed to yield to pedestrians.

Bike Lane > Street > Jetpack >>>>> Sidewalk

Anything but the sidewalk, basically. I'm an extremely defensive, observant driver. I will never give a shit if a person on a bike is ahead of me on a double yellow 25mph. I'll let them ride, maybe even roll my windows down and blast hype music. Life is too short to die in a multi-ton killing machine accident.

Yes, in a perfect world there should be bike lanes everywhere, but until that day, get off the road.

If youre on the sidewalk with a bike you should almost definitely be walking it. Exceptions if no one is around or youre just there for a second to get around something.

Its a tough balance since roads can be dangerous to bike on, and many cyclists openly do unsafe things.
