IMO Uncharted 2 is probably the game whose hype I understand the least

But Diablo 2 is the one I enjoy the least

Ocarian of Time is boring

Mario 64. OoT isn't as janky and I haven't played FF7 so I can't judge.

Obviously influential though.

Ocarina of Time

It is influential, it's not even the best Zelda title on the system.

Anybody here played The Last Of Us Part 2? I think I remember when it was released, people admitted it was technically a great game, but they still absolutely hated it.

Its a tough question, because would you really say something like FF7 or Ocarina of Time is overrated even though theyre still okay or even good games? Id argue it has to be something that people say is peak, but in actuality is pretty bad instead of just alright.

Man, my inner Tales fan wants me to just say this. God awful beginning combat, a pretty rough 3rd act, several obtuse sidequests that you practically need a guide for if you dont want to miss out on interesting moments, especially with the main antagonist, and one of the most irritating skill check bosses in a JRPG. (Important that I put quotation marks around skill check, because its not something like SMT3s Matador where its actually checking your skill, Gattuso is just incredibly overtuned, especially so early in the game.) Despite that, I cant help but think the common consensus among fans is that its like the second best Tales game behind Symphonia.

Of course, I dont actually think its one of the most overrated games of all time, it has to be older. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, and the older, the more overrated. So probably one of the older Pokmon games.

This is how I feel when I see OoT. If Im replaying N64 games, thats high on the list, because it was a good game.

FFVII is okay. The reason it was one I choose is because that nostalgia peak to the reality plummet seemed huge. But some of the other options listed I listed were also big drops.

Maybe Mortal Kombat? Itskind of a trash game, like its straight bad. But Im not sure its reputation is that good either.

Edit: I also am not sure any of the original Pokemon are actually considered great, but thats a good suggestion.

People act like this game single-handedly destroyed the entire gaming industry when, for one, the gaming crash was a US thing, and for another, the state of the US console market was an actual catastrophe that deserved to crash. ET (and the Pacman port) basically just tipped the scales to where they were inevitably headed anyways.

Fuck no.

Portal? I dunno that question is like asking what the meaning of life. So many different ways you can go with it. I never played Undertale out of spite, but I don't know if I'd call it all time over rated or Portal haha just a couple first thoughts.

I have to go with FF7.

I've been revisiting a bunch of older FFs lately, and 7 just...doesn't hold up incredibly well.

A lot of its writing (which, to be fair, is mostly the translation, allegedly) is janky, to the point where it often feels like characters are talking at each other rather than to each other and a lot of points just don't flow well at all.

I also think that most of the middle of the game is outright bad, with a huge stretch of time spent with almost nothing happening aside from the group chasing rumors of Sephiroth. Midgar is fantastic and the ending hours of the game are good, but the middle just feels so empty.

I still like the game, but I don't think it holds up very well for what's still regularly listed as one of the best games of all time.

I thought about it for a bit, and I think Im gonna go with Diamond and Pearl. Not Platinum, but specifically Diamond and Pearl. I see a lot of general praise for Gen 4 in the Pokmon community and, while maybe not on the level of praise Gen 5 gets, is outweighed by just how much worse the original Diamond and Pearl are.

Well said. Replace Midgar with Pulse, and you basically just described FFXIII, which is regularly listed as one of the worst FF.

Goldeneye is a pretty good suggestion.

According to vgchartz (fwiw) the most overrated games mentioned, by console generation, are system exclusives:

5th: Goldeneye 007 (N64),
6th: SoulCalibur (Dreamcast),
7th: Tales of Vesperia (XBox 360),
8th: Bloodborne (PlayStation 4), and
9th: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch).

It doesn't mean that they aren't good or great... it only means they sold far fewer copies than they could have.

Grand Theft Auto easily

I'm trying really hard to not say Ocarina, but I really can't come up with anything else that comes close.

I wanna say Dark Souls because of how rabid the fanbase is, but since I haven't played it, for all I know, that's actually a good game.

I guess I could throw a curveball and say Sonic 1 or Mega Man 2, but honestly I liked both of those more than Ocarina, and they're also both less popular.

There's really only one other contender that comes to mind: Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. Everyone loves this game. But I hated it. The bosses took an eternity to die, and that was on top of being full of puzzles and mazes (which are things I hate). But ultimately, I did the most egregious of it to myself by putting all my stat points into 'Stache for laughs.

So I'm gonna have to go with Ocarina of Time.

For me personally I consider Assasins Creed Black Flag to be very overrated. That game really sucks. It is the entire reason I gave up on the AC series. Yet I see people claim it is the best

OoT. It was ok, but not mind blowing, probably because I owned a PC also. Once I got Everquest I never played OoT again.

Final Fantasy VII

I am all on board with OoT has aged poorly takes, but it was legitimately revolutionary. To me, FFVII was just flashy and more style over substance versus the legacy it has garnered (though note, I am in no way saying it's a bad game).

Breath of the Wild. Still amazed people thought it more influential to the video game industry than Ocarina of Time. Just full stop.

The Witcher 3 - tried on 2 different occasions to get into it because I wanted to experience the story....combat was such a wonky mess.

Elden Ring - got 2 or 3 bosses in. Didn't click, but it did introduce me to Demons Souls which I really liked and finished.
