Just by population you would think they could squeak out one?

Population means squat when it comes to the Olympics.

Azerbaijan has 10 million people and finished 13th in the medal count because they dominate the combat sports.

The only sport India cares about is Cricket and it's not an Olympic event.

India will get a chance in 2028 since Cricket is going to be a sport in it.

The Ganges and most other water sources (but ESPECIALLY the Ganges) basically being toxic waste dumps probably doesn't help them.

Sports are just not a priority in Indian society. Their main focus is academics so as a result, that potentially reduces the talent pool by a lot because we could have potentially missed out on the Indian Noah Lyles.

there was a multiple paged topic on this a few days ago, and I saw another one at some point during the olympics. Essentially India is still a relatively new country, just gaining its independence 77 (?) years ago. Poverty is a very extreme and widespread issue in the country, and to make matters worse it is currently in the middle of a far-right fascist political reign of the BJP and Narendra Modi. So it's not surprising they aren't great at sports, considering most of the sporting competitions at the olympics require at least some baseline level of organized sports (training, facilities, etc) which india doesn't really have compared to other large countries, again due to poverty.

results are about resources and investment, cultural emphasis etc more than overall population. Australia has a population of 26 million and came 4th in golds

It's just a poor country. Population doesn't matter if most people live in poverty and doesn't have good sports training facilities.

In some ways, that applies to China also though it looks like they are improving a bit

Even Guatemala won a gold medal

India only ever won 3 gold medals in total in the last 50 years. Don't set too high expectations.

They only care about cricket because they have little competition.
If US, China, and others are dominating that sport, their interest in that sport will be down rapidly.
