Does you eye tend to focus on your ship and whats immediately nearby, or do you tend to focus further out around where the projectiles are originating from?

Further out.

Unless its a dense boss pattern, then i focus on the dot on my character

Really easy since almost every great one has been remastered or ported to Switch and Steam

I don't really like bullet hell games much, because I feel like I'm never able to take in the sci-fi (or whatever) setting, because I have to only look at my ship. I will do that for particularly hard parts in regular shooters, but for the most part I'll only play the games with more space to breathe, so I can look at everything without feeling smothered.

Thats what easy mode is for.

And the good thing about easy mode is that the community doesnt shame people who play it, because it is a legit way to play the game,

Also shmups rarely have amazing backgrounds. Even the more artistically creative ones just kind of have generic stuff or water, lights, or industrial rubble everywhere

Ikaruga is not really representative of the SHMUP genre. Its a fine game but it is different. Its mostly just a game casuals love to name drop because it looks nice and is easy to buy.

I think its better to dive into Cave games, or go classic with stuff like Konami shmups or Darius. Easy entry and have a lot of production value.

I also hate how most bullet hell games have no terrain at all. Yeah, you navigate enemies and bullets...but you don't dodge terrain. And not having terrain makes them all feel so soulless. That's why I'll take things like Gradius series over most shooters.

Thats why they use Danmaku or Bullet Hell for certain games. They are more like puzzle games once you start getting deeper into them.

Xevious is like 30 years old and doesnt hold up

I find that with anything involving maneuvering and aiming, the more comfortable you get with what you're doing, the further out focus goes from where you actually are.

I focus on the projectiles, observing the patterns for breaks I can maneuver around.

Raiden series, Mushihimesama, DoDonPachi, Crimzon Clover. Those are the ones that I like. A lot of action and effects on the screen and chaos.

There are some pretty fun ones in the Capcom Arcade collections too.

Why did you feel the need to bring this up?

I let The Force guide me & focus on what's ahead.

My problem is I tend to look at where my bullets are going, not the bullets coming to me, so I basically suck at them.

I really try to stay focused on my ship but for whatever reason my eyes drift to the target.
