For example, in FFVI Kefka uses a device to weaken the espers in the Japanese version and that is how he is able to win but in the English version the espers are just a bunch of weaklings and cannot beat Kefka, someone who has largely been a joke in terms of strength up to that point, despite massive numerical differences. The story is actively not told correctly and critical information is not conveyed. The spoony bard line, however, is correct in that the lines mean almost the same thing in both versions and the problem is that they used an extremely arcane slang insult (yes, spoony is a real insult that predated FFIV by a long ways) that was always going to come across as a bit goofy as basically no one would even know of its existence + the word itself sounds a bit silly versus the rather plain Japanese used. From Ys VIII and on, Falcom dropped Xseed entirely and gave everything to NISA instead. We were promised faster releases. It kept getting delayed. When it finally came out, there were parts that were obviously machine translated. It was so bad the president of Falcom issued an apology, and the game eventually got some stuff retranslated. --- Want some rye?
