Piano is a terrible main melodic instrument as far as tone goes. It's much better suited as an accompaniment and chord-based rhythm instrument.

Most pop songs are at least 30 seconds too short and could benefit from more harmonic complexity and movement.

Playlists full of singles are the worst way to enjoy music.

I dunno why I could get into Don Cab but not like Piglet and Hella. Something about old US mathrock seems really hit or miss for me. I should get more into Covet and CHON tho.

Hella is math rock for people with zero attention spans. I don't mind Hella though. Heir first album was dope I need to listen to the others.

Don Cab invented a lot of shit. They had a good mix of complexity, weirdness, soundscapes and hooks. A lot of bands seemingly have tried to do it again but they either forgot you need hooks and nothing seems all that deep. They aren't really too similar to Don Cab but they are instrumental. Save us From the Archon. Talented and neat to listen to but it's missing one or two layers beyond technical prowess at instruments to wow me.

But not everything is a missing match. Covet is dope. Piglet probably is but I haven't listened to them yet.

I mean, by the time you got to X and Y/ Mylo Xyloto they were kinda already doing that. Heck you can hear hints of it even earlier, the tunes they were using far back as their 2nd album lent themselves to that sort of style. Now they seem to alternate with an album focusing on more stripped back sounds like Everyday Life, and then a more pop oriented one like the last one they did. It wss more an expansion of sound palette than a full of swap.

They have songs similar to the scientist on more recent works, like O from ghost stories, and they have songs from fairly early periods that signal the direction of tracks like orphans all the way back on Mylo Xyloto or even X and Y.

You csnt just cherry pick two completely different songs, the point is they've always had wide ambitions for what kinds sounds they wanted and they've always had some elements of multiple genres. They started branching out almost immediately, even stuff like clocks uses a lot of the same ideas as tracks like orphans just executed differently.

The last 25 years have been some of the greatest periods of recorded music in the recorded history of recorded music, at least in the west. Imagine saying this in an era where Gorillaz, Weeknd, Billie Eilish, Khalid, Brittany Spears, Justin Timberlake, Shakira Beyonce and Lana Del Rey have all released ample music and that is just scratch the surface. So much diversity in sound and execution, so many new ideas.

I love the 80s. But cmon. Demon Days came out in 04. That alone completely eviscerated this claim

Gangstah rap effectively ruined the entire genre by with it's infantile slang and moves.
Most rap lyrics can basically be encapsulated as:

I'm from the ghetto yo
I like money n' bitches yo
Don't you be dissin' me yo
Or I'ma shoot yo ass yo
Cuz I am gangstah yo
THIS IS DA REEEEEMIIIIIIX

And the saddest thing is that these 'rappers' truly don't realize how much they're embarrassing themselves.

Nonsense lyrics make a song unlistenable.

I don't necessarily have to know what they're talking about, but they need to have coherent thoughts.

For example, The Moody Blues's Knights in White Satin. I have no idea what they're talking about, but wearing white clothing is a thing a knight can do, for example, and the chorus of "and I'll love you" is pretty straightforward.

Contrast with They Might Be Giants. I don't know what it means to build a birdhouse in my soul. Or what it means for a well to be electrical.

It's nights in white satin. It's about a ex-lover and he misses her. He writes her but doesn't send the love letters to her. He's not sure how he feels about her, but he admits he loves her. The spoken word at the end which depends is it's on radio or not I figured it was a poem in the letters

A song I like that has the same theme is. 10cc's I'm not in love. If you closely listen to the lyrics He's admitting that he is.

DavidZ2844 posted...
EDM or just electronic in general is the best genre of music and its not even close really. So much more variety than band guitar stuff.

I pretty much never interact with any of the music threads on CE because its always a bunch of old people jerking off to bands and guitar music, which all sound the same to me. No one ever likes EDM.

I do like hip-hop/rap though and can enjoy discourse on that here every now and then, but its mostly all band guitar stuff here, like 99% of all the music discussion tbh
I agree. I've always felt that EDM has more variety and potential for completely new sounds and elements that new minds can bring. (Rezz, Sudden Death, Excision, Clozee)
