It might have been because of all of the debate prior to 10 coming out around upgrades. Wasn't that the one where Windows 7 and 8 users could upgrade to 10 for free, but only for certain period of time?

IIRC when you buy a modern copy of windows, it is locked to the hardware profile of the computer you installed it on. Change too much hardware and it will claim your copy is no longer valid. In practice you were able to use your activation key for 7/8 to get 10/11 up until late last year. If you talk with the right support rep you might still be able to do it now. s0nicfan posted...
