No it wasn't nostalgia. It was pre 9/11.
The US won the cold war. The economy was good. Etc.

There were definitely bad things but overall it's not just nostalgia

Youd have to put the full library of the 90s out there next to the 2000s and 2010s to be able to make a proper comparison.

That said, there are three facts-

  1. There is always shit.
  2. There is always gold.
  3. Trends change over time, sometimes for the worse (franchises, microtransactions)

The 90s had its share of shit just like it had its share of gold. So did the 2000s and 2010s and so far 2020s. However, its also true that games in the 90s didnt have to suffer being hacked to pieces for launch day DLC, loot boxes and always online DRM.

Same. Most people are deeply nostalgic for their childhood because they didn't have as much to worry about back then and the passage of time has put a nice gloss over the ugly parts.

Yes, but there was more gun violence overall in the 90s (especially the early 90s).

Homophobia was a lot worse too.

Trans people were considered disgusting freaks by many if not most Americans.

There was also plenty of racism and police brutality. The only difference was that people rarely had cameras on them so police officers' stories were always accepted as fact.

Sexual assault was both more common and more underreported.

I'm sure there's lots more that I haven't mentioned but this is enough.

It really depends on where you focus. In the US the economy and stress over global events was unquestionably better, but many minority groups have made great strides since the 90s. I went through a lot of bad things as a child because no one really talked about gender dysphoria or recognized autism that didn't match the Rainman stereotype, which I probably would have understood a lot sooner in my life if I was born 30 years later.

I can get on board with that if for no other reason than the fact that generation of consoles (PS2 etc.) was the last time graphics actually cost a reasonable amount to render. They never needed to go beyond that, especially since it caused development costs to balloon.

First Harry Potter movie.
But we also sequenced the human genome and landed on an asteroid, so it kinda balanced out.

Honestly, I love it just for the level of tech. Cellphones weren't the "I have my entire life on this thing" box, social media wasn't the all consuming tire fire it is now, and you could have opinions without starting arguments and actually talk about them on a personal level without having to pull up a Wikipedia page every sentence. I will never not miss that.

Not to say things are bad now, but stuff was way fucking less stressful when you weren't expected to be connected to everything 24/7. I say this coming off a bad day and just unplugging from everything to unwind and having a friend call the police to wellness check me when all I wanted to do was chill and read for a day so my opinion could be particularly bias at the moment.

'90s were objectively better

-Economy was doing great
-Movies and music were fantastic
-Social media and technology didn't control every aspect of our lives
-Most people actually went out and interacted with their friends
-People were actually more free and able to express themselves without fear

I genuinely feel sorry for those that didn't have the privilege of growing up in the best decade
