Could you get by with just 4 gallons of gas per week?

From 1942 until the end of WWII, the US government distributed ration stickers that determined how much gasoline you could purchase. Along with the sticker for you car, you would receive a book of ration coupons which you would hand in when buying gas.

The most common was the "A" sticker, which entitled you to up to 4 gallons of gas per week. "B" stickers were generally issued to workers who car pooled; this was limited to 8 gallons per week. "C" stickers were for essential professions, such as doctors, nurses, dentists, priests, mailmen, farmers, construction/maintenance workers, and soldiers. "D" stickers were used for motorcycles.

There were also "E" stickers for emergency vehicles (police, fire, etc), "R" for off-road machinery (tractors, combines, etc), "T" for truckers, and the controversial "X" which allowed unlimited gasoline, usually given to VIPs.

Not a chance. My pickup gets 17 miles a gallon so I'm using about 1.5 a day getting to and from work. My work truck is similar and I'll put more mileage on that during the week, plus maybe a loader that chews through diesel. Forklift is on propane though and that does pretty decently.

That would not be enough. 35 miles round trip for work 5 days a week. Averaging 33 mpg, but could get it up a bit to make it 4 full days. But I'm not getting my mpg high enough for 5 days of work.

We don't want that. People are not thinking about the grid and we have plenty of oil. The government is trying to downplay the oil we have but we have plenty of it that's not being used.

Pretty easily. I don't have much data on our current usage because my girlfriend just started a new job a couple weeks ago and is now driving to work instead of walking (~10 km round trip, but in traffic, so not great gas mileage), but before that I'd typically only put ~30 litres (~8 gal) into my car once every month or so. I'm fairly certain that even now we could still get away with only 4 gallons a week without making any changes, but there's also plenty of room to make changes as needed (driving to work isn't entirely necessary for her, we could cut Costco out of our grocery routine and save a ~19 km trip every other week).

Really, if she weren't driving to work, we could easily get away with a carshare instead of owning a car. We bought this one at Covid's peak, though, so carsharing wasn't the most attractive prospect, plus she's bouncing between contracts and it's hard to predict whether or not she'll need to drive to a given job (this one's certainly walkable, but she's had others that absolutely were not), so we kind of had to buy one. Hopefully our situation will be more amenable to just not having a car by the next time we're looking for one.

Presumably quite a bit less efficient, but it's also worth noting that this was before the postwar boom in car-infested infrastructure that still defines so much of North American city design. In the 40's, most city neighbourhoods were still largely walkable and had functional transit systems, so people didn't necessarily need cars for everyday life the way so many do now.

Even better is just not designing everything around everyone having cars, since electric cars solve absolutely none of the infrastructure and safety issues that are inherent in the current car-centric design paradigm, but electric does at least make cars less smelly and noisy (though for sensible cars that don't deliberately make a ridiculous amount of noise for no reason, once you get above ~30 mph/50 km/h the tires generally make more noise than the engine, so electric cars aren't actually quieter at higher speeds).

My current job has me doing doing a 42 mile round trip to the office and back, M-F, so no. I burn through about 60% of my tank just doing that drive a week (about 7 gallons), so I'd run out by week 3 I think.
