At some point of the late game you take control of Cal Tech's teacher rather than himself and you have a fight off with Darth Vader himself.

After the fight Vader does the video game cutscene boss thing where he just wins anyway. But pretty uniquely he actually kills her.

So if you die during the fight, well, you die. But if you win it you die anyway.

I'm sure there are other examples of this, but I can't think of any. It just feels like in another game it would have been a Souls-esque unintended to win boss fight where if you failed you get the same outcome. Having to complete a difficult fight to get the same result as a fail state is just... curious.

About 60% of Xenoblade 2s boss fights are you loose in the cutscene lol. One of my only two issues with that game.

About 90% of the Trails of Cold steel series' fights are you win the fight, you lose in the cutscene.

Yeah this is very common in JRPGs

You misunderstand me. I'm not simply saying that the villain gets a cutscene win. I'm saying the winstate and the failstate are effectively identical. But you have to complete a boss fight to get the winstate. Having an encounter with the villain and him BTFO'ing you in a cutscene after you reduce his HP is not the same, in well-written stories at least.

This is probably one of if not the most annoying jrpg trope

I've dropped almost every game where you lose in the cutscene. You can only do this in the tutorial.
