Cockatiels themself may be cheap, but between toys and vet costs, they're expensive fuckers to own if you're taking proper care of them.

Millet is not particularly healthy for them. It's fine as a treat but not something they should have all the time.

I had a giant green iguana. I loved him, but he just about ate me into bankruptcy, (those fucking daily homemade salads with calcium were expensive). And don't even get me started on how much I had to pay to convert a closet into a cage, with a timed lighting and misting system.
Pets are great though.

Try having kids.

Needy things always wanting stuff like food and water and shelter. It really adds up.

2 months after I got my cat I had to take her to the vet for a serious illness and surprine, $900 bill

I had the option of leaving her overnight in the ER but it was some ridiculously expensive charge to do that. I think it was like $500 a night. Could've been a thousand, one of those two are right.

I had to take my Frenchie to the emergency vet, who put him in a barometric chamber overnight due to allergies. That bill wound up being around $5000 if I recall correctly.

Not in America lol. Should note said bill would be around $650 I think in USD.

We've had cockatiels since 2016, and total vet bills over that whole time prior to this year were about $400, if that. Wouldn't have really made financial sense. At any rate, as far as I know pet insurance providers where I live only cover cats and dogs.

The one on the right is Quiche. She's the one who's been noticably sick, though the vet reckons all three are showing subtle signs of illness. The dark colored one with speckles is Omelet, and the one at the back is Nod brib - she's the mother of the other two (biologically; not just as in "I'm gonna call the oldest one the mom of the flock").

They've got a Facebook page if you wanted to see more; look up The Don birb Flock. (Don birb was the first in the flock and the father of Omelet and Quiche; he passed away in 2021.)

They're all cute, my first cockatiel was a pearl like Omelet. I hope it works out for all your birds, the moment they're sleeping on two feet instead of one you have to bring them to a vet ASAP.

Quiche has been fighting this for a while and is doing well. Antibiotics have helped keep symptoms in check, and seemingly completely fixed up Nod and Omelet when they came down with the same, but Quiche just keeps relapsing once she comes off them.

Omelet's pearling was quite a surprise to us. The father was wild-type, but must have been a carrier. The mother is a lutino pearl, but the color difference between the pearls and her "main" color is subtle enough that we didn't notice it until we looked closer after seeing how the babies turned out, we thought she was just plain lutino.

Here's an older pic including Don birb.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/9/8/AAe-HEAAEhn6.jpg

Left to right: Omelet, Quiche, Don birb, Nod brib.

If I remember correctly, Quiche would've been about 4 months old (and Omelet 6 months) when this was taken. The little ones are a bit over 2 years now.

guess i'm lucky i never had a bill over 500$ and even then it's very rare for me.

she lived to 10 years old despite me wanting to give her healthier cat food (she wanted none of it) only friskies dry.

I remember joking once that my pet cockatiel was masturbating when he'd grab the bell in his cage and rub along the branch, thinking he was playing or it was some cleaning process. Then one day I actually googled "cockatiel masturbation" and found out it really was.

He rang his bell so many times in a day.
