He was a major creep and girls kept complaining about him harassing them. Turns out he was out on a $50k bond awaiting trial on the charges of repeated sexual assault of the same child, child enticement, and causing mental harm to a child.

I knew he was a creep and people have switched shifts and quit to get away from him, but I didn't know the specifics until he was finally let go. I just want to say. Fuck all you employers who try to sweep sexual harassment under the rug because you don't want to hurt your turnover rate.

There was a guy at my job that got caught taking to so teenage girl I remember there was like this whole investigation, and shit was going down And we dont know all the specifics, but a lawyer who use to be in the same shop as the guy told us that the police somehow fucked up. So, he didnt get arrested. Still lost his wife and kid, though, IIRC And I believe he has to work in the group building now so they can keep an eye on him And no internet privileges, AFAIK This was a while ago, though

This country has a lot of pedophiles who walk among us sadly. Next to murdering someone, nothing is more vile than stealing a child's innocence,

There's an argument to be made that it's worse. At least with murder the suffering is over quick. With rape and sexual abuse, you're condemning someone to suffer for the rest of their life.

I was married for several years to a survivor of child sexual abuse. Neither of us felt it would have been better if she'd been murdered as a child.

In fact several of the women I came to know in my life had stories to tell like that. Even when I was a child, I knew a girl of my own age (7 or 8) who one day told me about the man who "took her into the woods", but I was young enough and naively innocent enough to not understand what that meant. I have a horrible suspicion that abuse may be a lot more common than most of us would expect or like to believe.

The phrase "a fate worse than death" exists for a reason.

It's obviously going to be a subjective case-by-case scenario, depending on just how bad the abuse was and how much psychological damage it does, how difficult it is for the victim to cope with it or overcome it (if they ever do), and so on. But for some people the abuse will literally ruin the rest of their life - and may lead to suicide or a slower form of self-destruction anyway.

The phrase "better off dead" also exists for a reason.

It's not up to either of you to unilaterally make that decision for every other abuse survivor in the history of the human race though.

Keep in mind that I said that there's an argument to be made to see things that way. I never said that everyone does, or everyone should. But there are absolutely people who do. And both sides of the discussion have their own merits.

Just how far do you take the "murder is a mercy" argument, though? The judicial system can't afford to equivocate over how we treat murder as the ultimate crime, otherwise we fall through the cracks into an surreal, inverted moral universe in which a lawyer would be able to plead that their client deserves a lighter sentence for killing their victim rather than leaving them alive.

But why do we treat child sexual abuse as a crime sui generis, when lives are permanently ruined just as brutally by other violent crimes that condemn their victims to a lifelong prison of constant pain and trauma? That leave their bodies permanently broken, their minds or brains damaged? What about the girl whose ex-boyfriend drenches her with gasoline and sets fire to her, leaving her with 40% third-degree burns all over her body? The teenager who is so badly beaten by thugs that he's left in a permanent vegetative state? The survivor of torture who will always be too terrified to turn on a light switch or take a bath because it triggers nightmarish memories? Are we really going to take the position that child sexual abuse is a unique kind of atrocity that will always surpass such horrors, that it's the only crime that can conceivably be treated as equal to murder or even worse? It's not a position I would take.

I appreciate that's a bit of a digression, but because this is such a emotive subject to talk about we can't afford to be scared to try to keep things in perspective. When I heard what had happened to my then-girlfriend when she was 10, I wanted to pull my teeth out or rip my skin off because there was nothing I could do about it and for the next few days I was eaten up by rage, angry at almost everyone and everything around me.

He said it was subjective And it is For some people, they believe that murder would have been a mercy The legality of the situation doesnt matter Some people feel they were better off living their lives, where some feel dying would have been better for them Its not up to us to say that theyre right of wrong, though

I do see that -- just as I can understand why someone who's been left paralysed for life by a vicious attack 10 years ago might sometimes wish that it had all just ended for them right then and there. I suppose I just want to urge that we try to steer clear of making "a fate worse than death" an article of faith. I still believe that -- regardless of our emotional responses -- murder is the only crime that could deserve punishment by death.
