I will forever remember a cop show (NCIS, maybe?) where one of the detectives goes into the room of a gamer-woman, somehow discerns her PC's specs just by looking at the case, then immediately realizes who she is and starts saying shit like, "Wait, you're [insert random haxxorz name here]? You... you hold the high score on nearly every MMO on the market!"

This was back in the 2000s, but even then I felt like saying, "Dude, I *guarantee* you there is at least one person on your staff who has played a video game before, and they should be line-editing this part of the script, because this shit is just fuckin' embarrassing."

From what I'm gathering, writers aren't an agreeable bunch, and executives DEFINITELY dgaf about portraying cultures accurately when the advertisers aren't targeting that demographic

edit: I'd bet the writers had the conversation that they need to throw "high score" into it so the geriatrics would understand something in the sentence

It really is crazy when they do that shit, like where do they get the equipment and how? Like there's more effort put into being wrong than correct, how do you not just get some staff members N64 with controllers and have the actors play the game even haphazardly? How would you come across an N64 controller and then a Playstation or some other combo.

I absolutely hate when TV shows try to portray internet cultures, they're never correct and always end up doing a culture/community varying degrees or harm.

Sometimes it does feel like a ploy to see if anyone notices the mistakes

I was actually going to point that out more, like it's some industry wide joke or secret marketing tool that if you want to have someone play games in the background you have to make them incorrect, like some weird way to get gamers talking about a show they may not have before.

I know for a fact there was some Special Victims Unit which referenced gaming and got something egregiously wrong, so much so that Ice T complained about it on Twitter.

To say nothing of the fact that, even back then, being a "top player" in an MMO (however you define that) was basically a full-time job and doing so in more than one was pretty close to impossible unless you had time-distortion superpowers.

Also "levels." Can't have a video game without levels to beat, after all.

They must have wrote that into an episode as retaliation because I remember a whole episode of him gamer'splaining over some game related crime.

Funny to find this topic as I just got done watching an episode of Frasier where Niles is trying to play a game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH9t2JreP0I

Niles: I can't seem to get out of this room. Is this some kind of advanced level?
Kid: No, this is like the training area. I didn't even know you could die here.

there are definitely inaccuracies, I guess some of that comes from it being at an awkward time in the early stages of the internet
