You have 3 choices

1. Pay what you think something that is going to be instantly valueless the second you buy it (hint: it had no value before you bought it too)

2. Pay what daddy jeweler says you should pay for a ring (hint: it isn't in your favor)

3. Don't fall for this scam

Do not keep it a secret. It generates needless stress for everybody. The actual proposal moment can still be a surprise, but the idea that you are going to do it should not be. Go ring shopping together with a rough budget in mind. For all you know, they prefer a single gem to the encrusted pav look. Or a certain shape? Maybe they value clarity over carets? Maybe a larger gem looks weird on a small hand? Maybe they have feelings about how money should be spent? Or maybe you luck out and they want to use their grandmother's ring instead.
...and definitely don't forget to insure it immediately (look into "valuable property insurance").

I heard a rumor that rings have been around since forever, and that it's specifically diamond rings that became the marketed thing from some diamond shop place.

But a circular band of metal placed upon the finger was apparently always done.

The ring I got my wife was like 250 and that also included an engagement ring as well. My ring was about 150.

There is a lot of data that suggests with the more money you spend on your wedding, the chances of getting divorced increase.

Spend what you want to spend on a ring. Don't go based on what others tell you that you need to spend. If you're happy together that's all that matters. Two of my friends got married and they didn't do rings at all, they went and got their fingers tattooed instead for under $100 combined.

I feel like a lot of our society does things just because rich people lobbied and marketed to hell and back to make those things not only socially acceptable but demanded as in "You'll have no friends, no social life or be a virgin forever if you don't buy this product" kind of way even Marriage in general has an entire industry designed to squeeze those people dry

Depends on the woman. My wife didn't want to be involved in the process at all because she thought it'd be stressful making that type of decision or putting in the effort to learn what she wanted in the first place.

I took a woman friend with me to help educate me on some things and point out stuff. She was phenomenal help.

The social convention of spending x months of your salary on a ring is sort of dead. One, salaries are not increasing much and people are struggling to keep up in all aspects of the economy, and, two, people have really been educated on the ills of the diamond industry and are increasingly turning toward lab grown diamonds that are essentially the exact same thing for half the cost.

I made our rings. We both don't like wearing them, so I figured making a pair of silver rings we could wear for special occasions would be smarter and more romantic than either buying or just not bothering with them.

While the proposal came as a surprise, I involved my wife in all matters pertaining to the selection of her engagement ring and wedding band. She picked out the diamond and setting for the engagement ring. She also designed her own wedding band with contours. This was a great sigh of relief for me because if for some reason she didn't like the rings, then it was her own damn fault.

My band is brushed yellow gold in the center with beveled edges (and the entire underside) in a glossy white gold. All rings were custom made.

Yeah this.

Though, if rings (all jewelry) were priced more according to their precious metal weight + wholesale gem value, with thinner margins for the "artist" or brand, then it would make more sense.
The point of expensive jewelry for plebs is that they can always hock it in an emergency. They (jewelers) shouldn't be absolutely eating your lunch on it in that scenario. Spending 6 weeks of work on it wouldn't be such a problem if you could get 4 weeks worth back.

There is an overwhelming amount of choices if all you want is something "nice". Plus she'd need to weigh that against the urge to cheap out on something she liked but costs more.

I eliminated all of that and just bought her something she really likes, was what I wanted to spend and she didn't need to think about. Same concept as having to decide what you want for dinner yourself or you spouse just magically showing up with a pizza.
