It legit CAN'T be Playstation because it is literally just the SNES version with insufferable loadtimes, so by default at least the SNES version is objectively superior.

I played the PSP as it was the most "modern" port at the time but you'd do just as well to skip the included sequels. I've heard a lot of praise for DS as a full remake with more to it, though. Are the 3D versions ports of that?

DS or Pixel Remaster are the correct choices imo

depends on what you value more, but they're matchless

If we're talking international versions, SNES is easy type while PSX is hard type, so there is a big difference for FF4 game. I don't think the load times were as bad for FF4 either.

I'd much rather play the PS version than the SNES version because it's the "original" version (localized, of course). DS > GBA > PS >>> SNES.

I dislike the DS version, its not that fun to PLAY

I think they made it harder or something (Maybe it was that way in Japan) and the NG+ thing is dumb as hell

DS has some really brilliant boss design and good challenge. It's pretty much an entirely different game and it's better for it.

I always thought the DS remake was kinda ugly

PSP or pixel remaster imo. Feel like pixel remaster is the ultimate most juiced up version of the original snes release, but the psp version has some nice graphical improvements that give a lot more charm and personality to the towns and such

The localization for PS1 is also different iirc

can you please explain why you value some graphical differences over an entirely revamped battle system that actually has depth?

Wrong. SNES very is easy mode. PS1 version is more challenging.

that's fair but it essentially boils down to the fact that in base ff4 you have no character customisation besides equipment

I'd vote for the DS remake if a lot of the important augments required to make the endgame not a complete nightmare weren't missable, but since they are and you pretty much need to follow a walkthrough to get them, I voted for the Pixel Remaster.

DS vs PR is tricky to me because DS is objectively a much more interesting game mechanicswise and yet I feel like I would never recommend it to anyone who wasn't already a pretty hardcore gamer. It's too hard at baseline and it gets way harder if you miss the augments, like Ry said. It also mixes things up in ways where it's very clear it expects you (and I feel even wants you) to have played a version of FF4 other than it. The CPU with adds boss is the big example that comes to mind for me, since iirc it works exactly opposite to how it does in every other version and is clearly playing with your expectations. Pixel Remaster by contrast feels...pure, for lack of a better term. It's nothing but a fairly early SNES game, just polished to the point it shines like a cut diamond. The leveling curve is beautifully tuned so you never have to grind because just battling normally through a zone will always get you to the right level, the translation is deliberately kept simple and solid, and oh my god the music dawgggggggg

Like...I almost feel like these days, FF4 should be experienced by playing Pixel Remaster, then immediately playing the DS version, back to back. DS version is like FF4's own Master Quest. FF4 is such a foundational and timeless game in its SNES version that it deserves to be experienced as close to how it was once upon a time as possible with just a solid polish pass layered on top for good measure, then you try the remake that modernizes the gameplay to add decades of gameplay design experience to it. They're not games competing to be better than each other, it's more like PR is FF4 as you would experience it as a child or young teen, and DS is FF4 as seen through adult eyes, if that makes any sense.

Yeah DS vs PR is not an easy one or the other.

I think I would lean DS if you're only playing it once personally but there is definitely a solid argument to be made for it being PR instead.

Ideally you just play both eventually and start with PR though.

That and the battle design is completely different.

ATB system is the same on paper but now you have a rich customization system to use with it and bosses that make you need to use said customization. Compared to base FF4 where you can just zerg through everything without thinking.

So yeah calling it the same system is just really dumbing it down.

I do agree it's not even really the same game at that point compared to the other versions which are.
