So I watched the very very beginning of Maximillian Dood's, and he shows off this combo where he hits this random enemy a bunch of times in the air with some crazy flips and sword effects. And I just don't find it all that impressive compared to something like Nier Automata or whatever. Meanwhile I go to the comments and sure enough one of the highest one's is "that opening jump cancel combo in this video is so sick." But you know what is even sicker? Breaking an enemy in Octopath 2 and then 4x brave boosting it with Brandt's Fury. Anyway.

I adore Automata but it's combat was the weakest part by genre standards. Basically every major character action game release of the last decade has handled better. Odd standard to compare by.

I played the Octopath 2 demo for like an hour and the battles were intolerably dull, couldn't force myself to keep going, but hey that's early game, who knows. Obviously turn based can still work because I'm playing the ever loving shit out of Star Rail, and Chained Echoes was great.

.... So I guess from where I'm standing turn based can work, but Square can't do it anymore. Well, except Dragon Quest XI, we'll see how XII goes.

Yes, I liked Kingdom Hearts.

But seriously, the feedback loop between each button press is designed to be as addictive as possible. The timing of the previous press affects the next one and so on, so you're always fiddling with it to get it just right. You should be able to press that button hundreds of times without getting bored, and in fact you'll press it thousands throughout the game. Whether those presses kill 1000 or 5000 enemies isn't really a big deal to me.

I never had an issue with Nier Automata's combat but I'm certainly not comparing it to other character action games when it's been so heavily hybridized with an RPG. I'd say the same thing about like, the new God of War even though those USED to be character action and inherited some of that action but not in the same way really. A consequence of going for a broader audience.

And idk if it's like Automata where the combat is servicable and the rest of the game is great, personally I'm thrilled.

Automata is in a very unique place.

It is not far enough on one side to be a mashy action RPG like XV or KH3.

It's also not far enough to the other side to be a DMC5 or a Bayonetta.

I think that's why it suffers from a bit if an identity crisis, but it's far from BAD like I've seen some people say. And obviously I love the game far more than those other games (and it plays way better than KH3 or FFXV, but that's more of a problem with those games than the genre) despite this. Obviously the game has much more going on than it's combat.

Automata is functional but not flashy. I didn't get super far into it since it was a library combat, but it was fairly shallow but still satisfying.

The game itself though? Goddamn so good.

I mean I like FFXV and it's hard not to be upset the story was deliberately left unfinished (unless you read the book they released after they canceled the rest of the DLC). He's not saying anything fans or critics of the game would disagree with.

This actually worries me, especially after the cutscenes in 13 and 15 had so many "who?"s in them. It's not a good sign that your characters are memorable if I have to open up a log of who they are to remember them.

I mean part of why they pulled the plug was that SE did not seem to be on good terms with the team and the director (Tabata, who has now left the company) so I guess in this scenario you're proposing the answer would be "yoshi-p founded his own company and is not making final fantasy"
