SHININ' QUEEN
Subterranean Sunrise
One Who Bares Fangs at God

I wish I liked SHININ' QUEEN way more than I do, but it really doesn't come even close to hitting as hard as DESIRE did. That and it also keeps reminding me of Gate of Steiner. Still prefer it over its opponent, though.
Match 3 is probably the weakest match of the contest so far for me.

Hungary (The Atomic Era)
J-E-N-O-V-A
Sky Land

I don't know anything about Cleopatra Fortune except that the 2 songs that have been in VGMC are absolute jams. The Hungary theme is a song I like a lot. The highlight is the last minute or so when the bass and strings let loose, but I like the calm and menacing intro a lot as a contrast to that as well.

J-E-N-O-V-A is one of my favorite Final Fantasy battle themes. Strong melody and never lets up on the tension. I'm a big fan of the plucked string melody in the intro to Subterranean Sunrise. The rest of the song is certainly fine but doesn't do nearly as much for me.

Sky Land is definitely a happy and upbeat song that makes me feel happy and upbeat. The dissonant carnival-sounding melody towards the end of the loop is also pretty amusing in this context. One Who Bares Fangs at God is one of those songs I've never seen the appeal of. I think part of it might be that the song itself doesn't match the expectations of the title but idk. My reaction to this has always been mostly whatever.

SHININ' QUEEN
Subterranean Sunrise
Sky Land

Cleopatra Fortune - SHININ' QUEEN - 8 -
The vocals at the beginning are soo cute and scrumptious. There is a fun playfulness to the layered multi tempo melodies. THe driving beat makes me think of some machinery being stamped in a candy land factory. Ahh this is very novel, I just wanted to keep listening to it.

Sid Meier's Civilization VI - Hungary (The Atomic Era) - 6.5
I mean this is kinda cool, the regality and esteemed fanfare it carries with itself is alright. its a bit too slow and monotonous for my tastes-wait oh damn the beat just dropped i forgot this had this yoooo. I still stand by the first half being boring though. This final third should have come a lot earlier.

Final Fantasy VII - J-E-N-O-V-A - 7 -Ostinatos are like my favorite thing ever. This track does such a good job at conveying tension while being an absolute banger. I do wish it introduced more ideas because it kinda fell flat after the first 40s.

Rogue Legacy 2 - Subterranean Sunrise - 8 - Theres definitely some funkyness to this track. I like the contrasting quickness of the melody against the somber spacey sounds in the background. This track has a lot of different ideas and motifs, which can be a good thing. Sometimes when you try to say a lot, you lose a bit of identity. I felt it especially floundering in the middle. LIke i got a bit of a tropical vibe? It has a good grand climax though. My favorite part was when the drums and guitar kicked in at 1:50

Chameleon Twist 2 - Sky Land -8.7 - This kinda gives Sega vibes! It started off weak and feeling washed out but ended very strong. I like that it continued to surprise me. The progression of the distinct sound fonts and instrumentation was very cool. It hits those high notes with magical pitchy perfection (:54-59). Im not a huge fan of when it gets overly frantic, but this is a Good Song

Xenogears - One Who Bares Fangs at God - 5 - This song went by pretty slowly for me, dunno if that was because it was immediately followed by Sky land. It gives me a Chrono Trigger vibe (this statement means nothing) with its xylophone like sounds and general nature/peacefulness. The repetitiveness of the instrumentation makes me dislike this though. Im split on if the vocals improve or hurt the track. Despite all that, this does have a definitive otherworldly vibe.

Cleopatra Fortune - SHININ' QUEEN
Final Fantasy VII - J-E-N-O-V-A
Xenogears - One Who Bares Fangs at God

MATCH 1

The piano part of Shinin' Queen at 0:46 is pretty nice. I like the rest of the song too, but that part's definitely my favorite in the song.

Hungary kind of feels like In the Hall of the Mountain King in the sense that it has this gradual increase in tempo and intensity with a dramatic climax at the end. I start to really get into this at the 2:40 mark until the end. Before then, it's fine, but the slow and steady marching of the song isn't really something that interests me. From that point on, though, the change in rhythm and faster tempo gives a sort of flair to the melody that I enjoy. The introduction of the strings at 3:27 was definitely welcome as well. I think I like this more today than I did when filling out the favorites bracket. Still, Shinin' Queen is more consistent overall, so I have to go with that.

MATCH 2

I tend to like arpeggios in VGM, so the downward arpeggio that repeats throughout Jenova is really nice. The dramatic, ever-so-slightly dark melody is appreciated as well. I picked this as my A4 retiree, but I was very torn between it and Immortal. One Who Bears Fangs at God was a worthy contender as well.

Subterranean Sunrise ebbs and flows a lot, with my favorite parts being the ones with the electric guitar in it, especially the last one towards the end of the song.

MATCH 3

I like the bright and happy sound of Sky Land. It has a slight goofiness to it too, like the kind of song that would play when a character does something silly in a game or something like that.

Really love the atmosphere of One Who Bares Fangs at God. Feels like you're in some kind of ancient ruins, chasing after something that's slipping out of reach. There's this feeling of imminence of "there's something I need to do and I have to do it now." Max Galactica described this song as a "soundscape," which makes sense and probably factors in to why I like it a lot. Instrumentation-wise, I love how every instrument works together in unison to create this kind of feeling. Nothing is unimportant or unnecessary. Now that I think about it, these are a few things that I tend to react to positively in songs, so I guess it's no surprise that I like this song as well then.
