Never been a huge fan of Ariel as a character

Pocahontas is one of those movies I think they'd rather we forget about. Now that the true story is more widely-known, the movie comes across as very creepy.

Just watched it. Ariel was great, Ursala was great, Sebastian took a while but also ended up great as well. Only things that undeniably sucked were Scuttle, Kiss the Girl, Under the Sea and I guess I'm a bit mad that Ariel pierces Ursula's heart and it wasn't Eric.

Perfectly good movie that flounders a bit. So about the same as the animated classic I guess since I never really liked that either.

Came away really liking the movie. I can't really find anything too bad to say about it. It doesn't come across as dull and dingy; I think the use of color underwater was well done. They were going for realism so going for the huge color bombs like the animated films just isn't going to work, but I think they found a good balance of realism and bright colors. The CGI fish and stuff looked fine; even Sebastian and Flounder look fine in motion.

Song wise, Part of Your World was great. With Sebastian's songs, it's really difficult to replace that VA. He has some of the best songs in all of Disney and redoing them wasn't ever going to be an easy feat, sort of like with Will Smith redoing songs by Robin Williams. I personally found the renditions to be pretty good. Sebastian was very popular in our theater as well, getting a lot of laughs from his lines. Melissa McCarthy was superb in her role, I wish she had gotten even more screentime is all. I also liked the additions and care they took with developing Eric more as a character rather than a plot device.

But yeah, above average film. Way better than Lion King 2019 for sure. Our theater was just about sold out and the film got an ovation after the credits started, which is a fairly uncommon occurrence (though we rarely see stuff opening weekend).

I'll post my full thoughts later, but for now here is my...

A Story Worth Retelling (A Tier)

The Little Mermaid 2023
101 Dalmatians 1996
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Christopher Robin
Alice in Wonderland 2010

Just Watch the Animated Version (B Tier)

Maleficent
Aladdin 2019

Better Left Untold (C Tier)

Beauty and the Beast 2017
Dumbo 2019

What was Even the Point? (D Tier)

Alice Through the Looking Glass
102 Dalmatians
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Disney+ Exclusive/Haven't Seen (E/Mystery Tier)

Cinderella 2015
Cruella
Lady and the Tramp 2019
Mulan 2020
Peter Pan & Wendy
Pete's Dragon 2016
Pinocchio 2022
Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book*

Inferior in EVERY Way (F Tier)

The Lion King 2019

*Apparently the internet counts this as a live action remake even though this was made in '94, well before the live action remake craze started to hit.

Given that I feel only one remake is on par with or even exceeds the quality of the original I'm not in any hurry to subscribe to Disney and check out some of the schlock they've been pumping out recently.

Just went back from the movie.
I think it did some things better than the original, and some worse. I really like the romance between Eric and Ariel here and I think it's far more convincing in why they 'click' with each other.

The musical sequences, while not as fun and whimsical as the original, are mostly decent. I like the second half of Poor Unfortunate Souls, quite grand while keeping it sinister.

Yeah they completely neutered Under the Sea, my favorite song from the original film. I'm not going to spoil how they did it, but it's in no way as good as the animated version. At least they didn't butcher it like they did with live action Scar's Be Prepared. Part of Your World was somehow an improvement though in my opinion. So much more emotional than Jodi Benson's version which, to be clear, is also fantastic in its own right. Eric's new song was OK; not really anything to write home about, but Scuttle's is a fun bop. And I was pleasantly surprised by Melissa McCartney. She is no Pat Caroll, but she did Poor Unfortunate Souls some justice.

And that's my full thoughts for now

It kinda bemused me that they also added a couple more songs that nobody mentioned (that I saw) and they were sung by Ariel when she lost her voice.

Well I didn't think we needed to mention it cause it was all reprise for Part of Your World wasn't it. Did a good job of letting us know how she feels during those moments I guess.

There was another one with a more Caribbean beat, when she first was taken through the city and to the castle.
