They already did it once with 9

but with the way 11's DLC ended we all saw this coming anyway. I assume this follows that ending with Liu Kang in place of Raiden as the Protector of Earthrealm and him wanting to prevent the original Kung Lao's death at the hands of Goro prior to the events of the original MK1

we can only hope Liu Kang is as terrible at the job as Raiden was

MK11's story (I know, lol) made me like Liu Kang for the first time in the series so I hope he isn't a horrible failure in the next game.

There we go as I thought while it is technically a reboot it's also a direct sequel to mortal kombat 11

I may be interpreting too much here but it seems like the gore is a bit less "realistic" and more stuff exploding into blood in this trailer. That would be a change for the better.

Based on the ending of MK11 its probably the Kung Lao that died fighting Goro and not the one in MK2 but I guess we'll see

It says a world created by Liu Kang so he could have straight up pulled a bunch of souls into a whole new one. What could possibly go wrong?

I mean obviously since this is the modern game trend, they're gonna act like this is the new main one until the next one comes out and they call it MK12, thus pretending that this was just a spinoff all along... But this is effectively MK12 isn't it?

Kameo fighters sounds interesting. MVC1 style assists is a weird choice for Mortal Kombat but we'll see how it goes.

Don't like that some of them seem to be locked behind a paywall though. SFxTekken pay 2 win gem situation all over again.

It sounds to me like they're going to do MK characters as playable and guest characters as assists which is a smart way to do it imo, reminds me of oldschool Capcom vs where the assist roster was completely separate

Well that's probably where the DLC ending for MK11 plays in! Liu Kang made a perfect world and Shang Tsung from the other timeline made his own world and now Shang Tsung wants this world too!

People always complain that fighting games keep bringing back the most popular characters, but that's why they do it.

When you try to make a semi-clean break like SF3 attempted to do, people aren't interested.

To be fair, SFIII's case also had to do with its timing. It came out in like the late-90s at a time where 3D games were emerging, so people were probably less interested in 2D games (even one as good looking as SFIII). It also didn't even get a console release until Dreamcast, so before then you were at the mercy of your arcade even having it. By the time it got a PS2/Xbox release, people have mostly moved on to 3D fighters and Street Fighter itself was in a drought, with it mainly featured in crossover games.

Like you're not wrong with SFIII not being as well-known because it lacked a lot of the SFII/Alpha characters, but there were other factors involved.

Erron Black, DVorah, and Kotal Kahn are the most significant ones, although Im not sure how popular they actually are. I like them well enough.

and then theres the Kombat Kids from 10. Theres definitely some people bummed that Takeda didnt come back, so he must have fans. And Cassie is good, Ill miss her if they dont do some nonsense to make her present in the new game.

Yeah, I'd say Cassie was probably the most popular character introduced in the last few games.

Kotal Khan is probably the modern character with the most (wasted) potential but yeah Cassie is the only one who got to be a star in any of the story stuff, plus she's attached to Johnny which helps her become the favorite.

Not a perfect representation of popularity but people seem to like Erron Black and Cassie.

Erron Black lost a lot of goodwill with his ranged desperation attack in 11. Why did they switch to desperation attacks, anyway?

Yeah that checks out for sure, Cassie really stuck the landing as a character because she was a very natural extension of the story of two already beloved characters, and Erron Black is a cool gunslinger dude, no surprise either of t hem made a splash

I wouldn't be shocked if we saw Erron in particular since he'd be easier to insert. Cassie maybe as noncanon DLC?

The problem with the new characters is that they do nothing to develop them.

Kotal Khan just looks like a punk ass chump in both games despite initially seeming like a badass. And he had that awful romance with Jade.

Erron Black is just generic southern shoot man with no discernable personality.

Jacqui Briggs has no personality and is nobody's favorite character.

Skarlet has been wildly different in her two appearances and I can't tell you anything about her now.

Ferra Torr is lol

Kollector existed to just spout exposition once and nothing else.

D'Vorah was solid but lost good will when she just butchered fan favorites.

Takeda is cool, but they didn't keep exploring him.

Kung Jin is just kind of arrogant but they failed to do much with him.

Cetrion is an elder god but is still such a nothing character despite it.

Geras was fucking cool for being a muscle for the big bad though. Neat powers.

The problem is that Netherrealm's storytelling frankly sucks. They set up the Kombat Kids and have Cassie Cage be the main character, then Cassie doesn't matter at all in the next game and becomes less interesting, and Jacqui exists to make Jax's story better, and the other two disappeared.

Kotal Khan was just completely mishandled, and far more in the follow up game.

D'Vorah would be better if she wasn't just over pushed.

And the rest are quite literally fodder. They exist to only get their ass beat, and none of them stand out enough by design except for maybe Geras.

It's just a frustrating thing that NetherRealm drops the ball so hard when it comes to telling meaningful stories for the characters. It leads to everyone's individual story being so unsatisfactory in favor of having a big dumb overarching story.

You bring in Noob Saibot and neither Scorpion or Sub-Zero encounter him at all. How do you not somehow have a meaningful interaction there? At least one scene.

My rant is over. But NetherRealm has a chance to actually make more meaningful stories coming up in this game with the reset and I hope they go in a vastly different approach than they have been.

Are there people who care about storyline in fighting games?

My experience every time with a fighting game:

1. Scan the select screen and pick the coolest looking or hottest character.
2. Try them out. If I like their playstyle, I stick with them. If not, I try out the next coolest looking or hottest.
3. After I find a playstyle I like from doing that, I consider them to be my favorite character.
