Snapper very recently was comforting to Brennus in the Snap Zone and it stood out to me. He sasses Brennus. A lot. But he does care.

#18 - Jack Knight
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/3/9/AAQcMAAADozD.jpg
Jacky boy.

I normally dont do this, I really dont, but I just feel like I have to say that Jack is just a great guy. Really, just spectacular. I know that this defeats the purpose of an unbiased biography that filters in some useful information, but sometimes youve gotta just take a step back and look at the REAL facts of a situation, and there arent many people like Jack Knight hanging around in Zonn Zorr. And I think, quite honestly, we should recognize people with that quality of character and give them praise, applauding their work. And sure, Jack hasnt been around for long, but doesnt he deserve that recognition? Why are you so against it? I mean, come on, whats a little pat on the back for a guy like Jack. I really gotta wonder - why are you so anti-Jack Knight? Thats like being pro-Darkseid.

After David Knight is killed on his first active patrol in Opal City, the Mists son marshaled the criminal underworld, planning strikes on dozens of high-profile targets in an effort to draw out Ted Knight. However, the now aged original Starman, still grieving from the loss of his firstborn son, was in no condition to serve Opal any longer in a heroic capacity, and begrudgingly, Jack took up the Staff and the name - TEMPORARILY, he would remind his father throughout his career - in order to ensure that his home city remain intact. In the hours just prior to the infamous Night of Fire, Jack Knight would sweep across local Opal neighborhoods, putting down riots in the early stirrings of the largest crime wave that had hit Opal City since the legendary days on Garlic Lane.

Three years after his costumed(ish) debut, Jack Knight retires, following the death of his father and the birth of his daughter. Passing the proverbial torch to several heroes who had stepped up to carry on his mantle, Jack Knight leaves his home to Mikaal Tomas, his Staff to Courtney Whitmore, and the title of Opals protector to the Black Condor. With that, Jack packs up his home, including all of his possession, leaving with his newborn Kyle and his wife Sadie for California and a life devoid of the heroics which had consumed his every waking moment for years. And that would be the end of his career - until A-Day.

What's Jack Knight? Jack Knight is the guy who sells umbrellas at the heart of a hurricane. It's almost futile, almost, but the fact is, that if you've survived the hurricane all the way to the center, you might as well make sure you aren't wet on the way out. That's the nature of the easygoing Jack Knight. What I most love about Jack is his sense of priority. The man retired, left his home, relocated his entire life for wife and daughter. He was out of the business, so long, send my good bits to Courtney, I'm washing my hands of the insanity. And yet, with the world desperate for a beacon of light, Jack returned. It wasn't enough.

But... maybe. Maybe there's a purpose to Jack Knight in Z'onn Z'orr. Checkmate has movers and shakers, deal-makers and idea-bakers, magicians of great caliber and scientists of skilled pursuit. They don't have a man who can name you every Grateful Dead song in order by release. They don't have a man who has sat through every single Henry Fonda movie just so he could do his senior thesis on the American cowboy in cinema. Jack Knight is as off-beat as they come, and that makes him, for the purposes of the NPCs at least, utterly disarming.

Jack Knight has a superpower on his sheet. It's Superpresence.

Without Jack, Opal would have been empty. His ability to not only gather, but sway those around him in subtle ways is what made the Shade a man committed to the Jack Knight Appreciation Society, turned the Black Condor into his successor, brought Hamilton Drew in contact with Elongated Man. That's what Jack is. He might very well be the glue that holds all of you together. A Knight's journey, just beginning.

And then there were seventeen.

Since it was brought up and we're done with Coast now I think it's a good time to comment on this

Sue Dibny is a character I really only learned about here in the campaign, and when we went through her house in Opal it seemed more like "Here's a mystery we're going to be looped into" and I filed it away as that as we finished up the location. It was returning back to our hub, sharing what Lush saw and that she snagged Sue's pearls to Snapper that got me focused in on the Sue storyline itself. It's been a very cool experience to learn so much about a character and their impact on other characters and their situation having a tangible effect on anyone you talk to. To get to investigating about Sue, to seeing her body in the Morgue, to -then- meeting her at maybe her highest high right before her lowest low iit really hits hard how important one person can be to so many. Snapper for much of the campaign has been my mirror. To really understand something, or a situation, Lush turns to Snapper and she sees clearly. So this has been another case of one of my favorite characters leading me down a path to discovering another one. Snapper is really invaluable in that regard, beyond his mechanic in the game itself.

#17 - Zoe Lawton
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/3/5/AAUHRBAAETTT.png
A legacy character. And, once again, a write-up from our last list! Enjoy!

Rescued from the harrowing underground experimental laboratories of the Cinque, the story of Zoe immediately became complicated. Her father had moved heaven and Earth in order to ensure her safety, but Zoe and Deadshot immediately fell back into a complicated territory. At the time, Floyd was reeling fresh from his admittance to Catman of a crime most foul. It became apparent to Floyd he was ill-equipped to provide Zoe what she needed - a father that wasn't a piece of shit; thus, he foisted his daughter onto Spirit, a boy who he knew to be honorable enough not to try anything with his daughter, despite clearly wanting to (in Floyd's eyes).

Zoe was oblivious to what her father was going through, and she struggled at first to understand her place in Z'onn Z'orr, and not with her dad. But soon enough, she would be provided the truth - Catman himself, in an attempt to take away Deadshot's family in the way Deadshot had taken Catman's - revealed just how monstrous her father was to Zoe. This drove Zoe further away from her dad, and she chose to express her hatred for him by stealing his weapons - those trademarked wrist-shooters; and likely, that alone would earn a place on this list. However, the story did not end. On Spirit's first day off since he was awakened into the world of Darkseid, Zoe joined him on a trip to Hawaii. While visiting the mall, the pair were confronted by a psychopath, a massive, brutish axe-wielding villain called Citizen. After being chased into the Food Court, and witnessing Spirit in a deep, piptched conflict and fighting for his life, Zoe revealed that she had kept one of Deadshot's stolen wrist-shooters in her bag. She blew Citizen's brains out right in front of Spirit, then promptly vomited.

In Spirit's best scene of the campaign, the pair sat down on the beach afterwards, and he helped walk Zoe through the guilt, the pain, the shame - and Zoe revealed she didn't feel those things, which somehow made her feel them all the more. The killing didn't hurt; it was knowing that the killing didn't hurt that hurt. Since then, Zoe has been struggling with knowing that a part of her father's murderous tendency resided deep within her. But Zoe has decided not to hide from it - she instead wants to use it to make up for everything her father has. Zoe, most recently, even asked Spirit to let her go to Lamumba, so that a Lawton could make up to Hector for the sins of her father.

Sins of the Father. It's a recurring theme in this campaign, but no better exemplified in the story of Zoe Lawton. As her story continues, this young girl, only Spirit's age, is undergoing a harrowing rite of passage towards adulthoold. She's far too young and certainly not equipped to deal with the terrible, life-shattering consequences; but equipped with a deep, unshakeable friendship with Spirit, Zoe may just manage to come out of the other side of this journey without falling apart along the way.

For me, Zoe's story is perhaps the most rewarding one to tell over the long-term in this campaign. So many ideas are constantly percolating in my head for new Zoe scenes, little RP moments that I think will be intensely enjoyable. And as we rocket past the act closure of Eve Manners, I can only imagine where the Zoe story will go. It's probably one of my favorites, if not the favorite one going right now.

And then there were sixteen.

#16 - Kid Eternity
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/7/1/AAOJ0pAADZFT.jpg
The Kid.

Kid Eternity can say Eternity and summon anyone in history, so long as they are dead in the present, to fight at his side for 1 minute and 6 seconds (roughly). At least, this is what Kit claims his abilities were prior to the Spectres destruction of various leylines across the world. Now, his powers have become unpredictable, and this young agent of the Lords of Order must relearn his magical talent. Kid Eternity is a being in flux - his faith has been shaken both in his original motivations as a hero and in his own abilities, but Kit owes a life debt to those Checkmate agents who rescued him from the evil Thomas Alva Edison underneath Time in a Bottle, and he has thrown in wholeheartedly with the resistance efforts in the war against Darkseid.

I want to share my original write-up for the Kid for Maniac and Cody, when he ranked on his draft class' list. I think it does the best to sum up what the Kid is for this campaign:

The Kid sat down at his terminal, interlacing his fingers and cracking his knuckles. The time for a reckoning had come. He'd slaved away, expending his power, allowing the cold hollowness that filled his soul with each shouting "Eternity" to rattle him, beat against the cage of his heart, permeate every orifice and corner of his body. All of it was for this. The opportunity to claim victory, and not just a pyrrhic victory, but a dominating one, a clear sign of superiority that for once, the Kid wasn't the also-ran. The Kid was going to win and win big here. All needed to do was open Discord and...

...

The Kid's lips parted like a guppy, his glasses naturally sliding down the bridge of his nose like the beltline on a plumber's jeans. This couldn't be. This was bullshit. The Kid had come back from the dead for this. He'd toiled in the bowels of Hell for this, burned in agony, his flesh melting, stripped from bone, charred bones devoured by the demonic flames which licked at the end of every devil's whip as they had flayed the Kid's back. The Kid hadn't just died, he'd died in the worst way, and all of his actions, all of his work... The Kid pushed his glasses back up. It was the fact that no one cared about Geomancer, wasn't it? Geomancer had done him in. Screwed him over, big time. He should have aimed for someone with some clout, like Firestorm, like... who was this woman no one would shut up about? Sue Dirvny. That's right. He should have summoned up this Sue Divrny. But here he was. The damage done, the chance at redemption too late. He hadn't even cracked the top five.

"Whatever," says the Kid, turning off his monitor.

And then there were fifteen.

#15 - Scandal
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/9/3/AAOJ0pAADaTx.jpg
The First Daughter.

It was a foregone conclusion for Scandal Savage that she would never join the Society - not so long as her father, Vandal Savage, immortal tyrant, was a member. Scandal immediately took membership with the Secret Six when Mockingbird offered it, and she is the most in lockstep with his stratagem and tactics. Scandal traveled to Zonn Zorr after the Secret Six were forced by the traitorous Cheshire to abandon their stronghold, the House of Secrets. Now a resident of Zonn Zorr, Scandal appears to have developed a small infatuation with Minerva, who sees her as a potentially valuable asset in her fight to retake the Throne of Atlantis.

While I think Catman has a greater potential than Scandal in this campaign, I remain exuberant about the possibilities for Scandal moving forward. The daughter of the oldest man on Earth, Scandal is a more interesting spin on the anti-traditional values of modern feminism, by adding some complicated nuance between herself and her father. I think Vandal Savage, in Scandal's eyes, represents an evil, unyielding past; she is repulsed by what he does and says, and what he represents. And it's not so much his killing or other more visceral actions - it's about what Vandal Savage places value upon. It's the why more than the what. Scandal can be equally cruel and callous, but she's a thinking individual, and her cold heart still beats. In her eyes, that makes her a damn sight better than her father. That said, she is still her father's daughter, and has disparate as the two may be, Scandal's cold heart is a genetic predisposition, not an anomaly. Now that her father has finally managed at least the hint of an appearance, you can rest assured that Scandal will be clawing her way into the spotlight.

And then there were fourteen.

Scandal is endlessly fascinating. I think she's been consistently a figure in great scenes, and I'm curious to see how this "rivalry" between her and Bane continues.

Also to see if she and Minerva have a clean break or not.

And now with Vandal in the picture, she may have an even bigger role with regards to other portions of the campaign.

According to my list, it's time to start guessing Pixie.

#14 - PARCH!
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/8/2/AAUHRBAAEf9a.jpg
Hey. It's my beloved Parch.

Inventor and leader of Big Troubles, Patch separated from Data 7 after his old friends actions caused the capture and likely torture of Isis. Patch decided to go on his own way, searching for the missing kitty, only to become so wildly lost that he wound up in Taos, New Mexico, hunting what appears to be SKULL, an organization with no connection to Isis whatsoever. Fortunately, Nervy was able to convince Patch to mend fences with Data 7, and the pair once more have begun planning to take over the criminal underworld as Big Troubles, alongside Vicki Vale.

Of course, a good chunk of Patch's storyline does focus on those dangerous Big Troubles. Founded by Data 7 and led by Patch, the Big Troubles is a very disreputable organization of criminals that carries out heinous acts in order to amass sizable riches. Comprised of a crack team of talented misfits, learning to live, laugh and love together, the Big Troubles trained, sweated and prepared for their first mission - a trip to the surface of Antarctica, where they battled a titanic penguin with a jetpack and stole heavy ballistic missiles, trading them in for a base at the heart of Zonn Zorr. Recently, while preparing for a second heist, a membership recruitment drive was crashed by the perilous Pixie, who stole away T.C. from the organization as she announced the formation of rival gang the Passable Persuasions. This has turned Data 7 and Patch against their former friends - except not Patch so much, who still enjoys playing with T.C.

Patch represents something willingly lost in Artemis: innocence. Patch goes to great lengths to be happy. And childlike innocence is the lens through which he can see the world and still be innocent. How else do you cope with torture, with a city that sees you as a carrier of disease, with the unsure tomorrow of No Man's Land? By loving today. By loving everyone. By living without tomorrow ever in mind.

The reason Patch loves Starsa is because it's a love that is true, unadulterated, unrequited love. Patch can put Starsa on a pedestal because Starsa in some ways belongs on a pedestal. There are few things that Patch doesn't wholeheartedly embrace for what they are. He's happiness in a family, in some ways, the deepest and purest love there is. Beyond that, Patch fears what else may come. He's happiest playing games, not confronting the fears and hesitations that others must wrestle with in Z'onn Z'orr, and when others do bring the darker realities of the world to him, he simply tries to respond with hope and happiness. That's what he wants, more than anything else. Happy friends. Because maybe, just maybe, if he can distract everyone else with happiness, he can be happy as well.

And then, the unlucky thirteen.

Patch is so great, I got him in a commission.

Ermine pursuing the Patch voice box in Campaign 1 sat on the quirky side of things, and I wasn't sure where that would fit in in my own realm (I remember a time when Fields took Patch pre-voice box on a walk and Patch got lost! but not very far) and suddenly putting communication with this character would just be new.

However, Saoirse always could speak to him. She's also a biologist and magician, so it's not weird for her so much as super awesome. Having Patch around means she can get insight into an animal's world, and that's a never-ending source of amazement to her.

Patch has managed to fit in other ways, but that's part of what makes him special to her. Him, Data 7... both reasons why it was a conscious decision in this campaign for her to eat vegetarian.

You would do well to address her as such.

The Betrassan princess Iolande is both one of two young Green Lanterns of Sector 1417 and also the royal ruler of a planet that until recently was lorded over by Sinestro in his reign of terror. Iolandes planet was left starving, having succumbed to global climate change created by being forced into specific industries by Sinestros totalitarian leadership. Iolande finds the burden of being both Lantern and ruler significant, but as is her nature, she hides this weight behind the trappings of her station. Considered one of more isolated Lanterns in the Corps, Iolande will even go so far as to take her meals in a cordoned off portion of the Lantern dining hall so as to avoid intermingling with her fellow Corpsmen. However, Iolande has begun recently to share just a bit of her story with Saoirse, who has taken up a curious interest in the oft-recluse princess. This interest led Iolande and Saoirse to her homeworld, where the party took up arms against her long-lost brother.

Fortunately, her new friends were able to stay the execution of Prince Ragnar, and Iolande assumed not only the role of Princess of Betrassus, but Queen of Korugar as well. Now, opening up just a little, Iolande has begun dialogues with Jemm at Roz'etta's urging, knighted Brennus (mainly to teach him a lesson)... and who knows what else she will do. The future is bright for the regal Lantern.

It would be difficult for me to speak to what makes Iolande so perfect, in my estimation. Despite her outwardly arrogant demeanor and cold adherence to strict social mores, Iolande is a servant to her people, both of her kingdom and her sector. Little has been heaped upon Iolande that hasn't hardened her into a being focused solely on duty. Her obligations leave Iolande entirely unwilling to bend even a little - those things which are frivolous are seen as poison to her. Only recently has she become even slightly willing to open up and share in the simple experiences of food for enjoyment, as an example.

It would be difficult to not talk about how Saoirse has transformed around Iolande, and vice versa. At first, Saoirse was tongue-in-cheek with the princess, perhaps enjoying subverting expectations quietly as much as genuinely entertaining the Princess' oddities. Yet, over time, the pair have bonded in such a deep, meaningful way. They're coming to trust one another, to have each other's backs. After Korugar's completion, I am greatly looking forward to seeing where this close friendship takes each of them. It's a rarity, I think, to have such a realistic, developing relationship in a campaign between a PC and an NPC. Yet, our players really have impressed me at every turn with how much their deep, evolving connections change over time. Iolande in particular is one that intrigues me deeply. These two women are the opposite of one another in many ways, yet together, they seem to improve one another, change one another for the better. And I simply cannot wait to see what happens next.

A dirty dozen to go.

Iolande provided me the chance to fill out some of Saturn's history and how Jemm is as a prince (which, unsurprisingly, is far less fleshed out than Mars is), something I always appreciate, and sometimes it's the little things like that that make a character great for me.

Iolande felt immense shame at being deposed, something Roz'etta can sympathize with due to Jemm being deposed long before she was born, but Iolande doesn't want sympathy. Roz'etta told Iolande not only of how Jemm was deposed in his younger years, but also how Jemm was deposed for making the right call, and how Iolande, who looks at Jemm as such a respectable, great leader in comparison to herself is only lacking in experience.

In the actual comics, the first line of each chapter of Jemm, Son of Saturn is a piece of wisdom he was given by his mentor, and I've always had these words mean a lot to Roz'etta. One of those sentences is as follows:

The wise ruler knows he is nothing without his people. Join with your subjects heart, soul, and mind. Only then may your majesty move mountains.

On Korugar, when Iolande was preparing to take back her throne, Roz'etta made absolutely sure that Iolande truly valued the people she was set to serve. This may have come off as a lecture, but for Roz'etta it was as much a test of the resolve Iolande had as a leader, what she sought to be.

The Princess passed with flying colors, and as such when she would later speak to Roz'etta about speaking with Jemm, it was easy to say yes, not only to open up Betrassan/Saturnian relations, but because in Roz'etta's eyes Iolande had shown the fortitude of the exact kind of leader she would want Saturn to call an ally.

I've more to say later since I have to run, but

I think Iolande is brand new to Maniac and Cody. She missed out on my list because I had barely interacted with her by that point, and she even missed out on the top 52 ranking of her introductory period for a similar reason.

However, here she is, at number 13 of everyone, since my list began.

She's really something special - I'll type up more later, even if the next ranking is Pixie.

I think she tried to trap him into giving up all his princely titles to pay service to her planet, but she wasn't really going to hold him to that

So Iolande was just this stuck-up bitch when we first met her, who was like "Ugh, Terrans. I must lower myself to ask you to accompany me to Korugar to find my partner since the Guardians won't give me any help with it."

Brennus and Saoirse went to talk to her once, and she still came across as full-of-herself. Then again, Brennus is the prince of a dead country so he never really did anything princely ever or knew how to hold the title much, and Saoirse was "princess" of a magical realm except she turned it down awhile ago so she was Princess in potential only, and also the realm is dead. So Iolande, princess of a planet for 3 years at that point really had a leg to stand on.

Saoirse's early interactions with Iolande were kind of rude. Maybe even mean. She found a way to listen to Iolande talk within her position, and to say her own things and listen on in a way that was dismissive of this hoity-toity princess, where Saoirse was sarcastically being insulting at times. I think one of those early lines Iolande said was "this tomato is bursting at the seams with flavor". And I think Saoirse sort of lost it at that time, like - "wow, this is the small-talk I get?"

What changed was when Saoirse realized she was being genuine - she was amazed by the tomato's flavor. And Saoirse saw that Iolande wasn't a stuck-up princess - she was a dutiful princess who took the office seriously. She wasn't stuck-up - she was actually ashamed to be partaking in flavorful meals with Saoirse while her people had little. Duty was a very serious thing. And Saoirse, Irish national who went punk in a post-marriage retaliation of her life, found a royal who she could listen to, who she could believe in. Just like Waller, but with Waller, it's because Waller perfectly knows how to handle Saoirse and give her a long leash and self-determination.

So Saoirse and Iolande began to develop - Saoirse providing something Iolande hasn't really had - a friend. A chance to just be a girl for a bit. And Saoirse, opening herself to the idea that she has leadership potential, a part of her mother she didn't use to want anything to do with, has found somebody to model herself after a bit.

Korugar was an intense four sessions because we found Iolande's brother, AND he was ruling Korugar, AND Brennus and Riev disagreed on a split-second decision to assassinate or save him, AND he cut off Iolande's arm and took her ring... I got to play up perhaps the second most angering thing to Saoirse in the campaign, which was Ragnar's betrayal of Iolande. Yet even then, at the end when she was to kill him - Saoirse convinced her to choose mercy. Betrayal of the position of Princess? Perhaps. But embracing the position of sister.

Saoirse is new to sisterhood (and is probably currently rowing with Traci), but she's learning how to handle that and take it seriously - and seeing Iolande's heart break when she saw Ragnar alive, she couldn't let her go through losing him again. And she listened.

They are two WILDly different girls, from completely different backgrounds and races, but - they bring things out of each other.

But yeah, gonna try out some digs next time. Almost was today but... soon. Soon.

There is an element of the Green Lantern Corps where, with many members, initially you can only see what is a roughness around the edges. Yet, the more you dig into any of the Lanterns, you realize the greatest talent of the Guardians, in their infinite wisdom, is choosing the right people for what is truly the most grueling, difficult job in the universe. There was an interesting revelation from Pepper today that an entire motley class of bizarre rookie Lanterns actually gels extremely well as a unit because of each of their skills and talents. The universe naturally is filled with the absolute extremes of cultures and societies with a variety of moralities and ethical codes. Bringing them all together requires a truly deft touch, and thus, the more you push for insight with a Lantern, the more you realize the pompous princess Lantern may actually be the dutiful, honorable Lantern you would expect, under the surface.

Points to Scar and the gang, huh?
