7 was fantastic, this is fun, but it ain't no 7. I like that mobs drop loot now, it insensitives combat, and not just running every time. I don't get nearly the same creepy vibe they had in the swamp house. I've also felt lost and not sure what to do a couple times. Last night, I killed the second sister, saw the note about the 5 bells, and shot the one through the skylight. I looked out a couple windows, but didn't see anything. Maybe the 4 bells are the next step, but with the last sister and Lady Dimitrescu chasing me, I had enough for the day.

Its like an Alice in wonderland/horror/ RE game. Its good but not what i was going for in an RE game.

it's not really a scary game, it's meant to be more re4 than re1. i like it a lot

Village isn't really comparable to 7.

Village is actually RE4 part 2. It's basically the same game. It has the same mechanics and environments. It's just reskinned.

I didn't enjoy it as much as 7, but it's a solid title. It mainly suffers from a lack of focus and some of the more annoying anime-esque tropes.

3rd person vs 1st person is a pretty stark contrast, imo. I like that they brought some of the more standard elements back, but this ain't no RE4, from what I've seen.

You can play 8 in 3rd person with the DLC.

I honestly didn't realize how similar it was to 4 until I played REmake4. It was my first time playing the game. But yeah, it's pretty much the same thing

The bells are all in that room. You gotta do that puzzle for an important weapon. Look closely

It was a really fun game but just not Resident evil at all. A lot like 4 was as well.

There's a difference between something that is blatantly repurposed and something that borrows inspiration. Village falls in the latter category since it's a direct sequel to 7 that is also within the canonical timeline.

Well it all comes down to Umbrella/Wesker/whoever seeking out the otherwise isolated sources of infection to weaponize them. They move on from each one when they turn out to be unsuited to their needs.

controls are great

I loved the atmosphere, such a great vibe for 80% of the game. Wasn't wild about Factory or the ending sequences but oh well. After a certain point it clicked that the player is basically Van Helsing, and you just need to destroy everything. A lot like RE4.

It's hard to explain without spoilers, but the game has vignettes of different Resident Evils. Each "key" dungeon has a different motif and theme. There's some actual horror coming later on, but not much.

Umbrella has been trying to weaponize a mind control pathogen that makes a docile, subservient populace. Basically a zombified NWO scheme. Almost every game is their isolated attempt at perfecting this, with the implication that if it works it'd be released worldwide. They've gotten close, but nothing on that scale just yet. RE4 Plagas was probably their most successful run.

I thought it was better than 7. More enemy variety and upgrading/collecting shit is fun.

That baby monster part... that was pretty scary. I really don't think this is too much like 4. This is far more exploration oriented than 4 and the combat is much easier. The bosses couple have been a breeze. I guess I haven't played the remake, tho.

There's really just three: the Progenitor Virus, the Mold, and the Plagas. Everything else in the entire series is a variant on those three.

The Progenitor in particular might explain all of it though. The wiki says that it's found in the genome of a lot of species. Presumably, that indicates it infected much of the world at one point. The mutative properties could have affected certain species of fungi and insects to create the Mold and the Plagas.

Has some of the best storytelling in the entire franchise and reveals the origins of Umbrella. I really liked it tbh

I think it just had the most storytelling of the series. It's mostly the same stupid bullshit it's always been. Whether you think more of that is better or worse is up to you.

I love RE8

Just beat it. They packed a lot of story in the last bits. I'd like to see a Rose installment. Stuff with Chris was a nice little change. New Game+ time.

Everything to do with Mother Miranda is a complete and total mess.

She tells Lady Dimitrescu that she needs Ethan alive for the ritual, but she does not actually use him in the ritual.

Heisenberg tells Ethan that Miranda is using Ethan to kill off the Four Lords, but she could easily just do that herself. There's no reason to keep Ethan around.

Heisenberg is Magneto and has an army of metal monsters, but he's still hesitant to go against Miranda. But when you fight Miranda, she's easily the least impressive of the Four Lords behind Donna.

There's also the whole bullshit with Chris murdering Mia in front of Ethan and then offering no explanation.

When I left the game, I honestly thought the natural next step for a sequel was an open-world game like Infamous or Saint's Row 4 where you play as Rose, molding her way around an infected city.

IIRC, there was a lore reason for her being weaker at that moment than what she was hyped up to be. It was a pretty stupid reason, but it was because Rose was somehow able to weaken her enough for Ethan to be able to kill her despite being baby.

Oh man, while that's true in the scary department, just wait. There's one area that's extremely memorable and it instilled a sense of fear I haven't felt since Amnesia's water part.

yeah that villa area continues to be the horror mvp in the Rose DLC as well. I highly recommend it.

Love the guns in village. Some.cool and rare stuff you don't see often in games

Most people grow out of echo chambering

underrated game, i think a lot of people were mad because it's not RE7-2. but RE8 feels more game-y, in a good way, whereas RE7 is so scripted that it's kind of unpleasant to play a second time

I both like and hate that the plot for these has become more Metal Gear Solid as it goes along. It strangely fits, but it's not why I got into RE in the first place. I'm not sad though. Still really fun

I was immediately apprehensive when we went there again both because of the horror the first time and apprehensive that they would simply mimic what they did last time and it would be boring. At this point, I fully trust they could go full horror at any point, they made it fresh and scary!

It is much more like RE4 than RE1. RE7 -> RE8 can give you whiplash but I enjoyed them both. RE7 has the utterly atrocious end of the game and RE8 has the psychedelic mansion that ruins replays, but I think I enjoyed 8 more.

RE has evolved a ton since it started. That wasn't the issue here. RE7 was a breath of fresh air that mixed a lot of old school ideas with new school stuff. RE8 just did way too much at once. It wore way too many hats. It was still really solid but felt like a kind of directionless grab bag rather than trying to build off what worked in the last game.

Yeah, I can see what they were trying to do with each Lord being a different "genre," but I don't think it worked very well in practice.

Because it was literally pulling itself in multiple directions? It couldn't decide if it was an old school survival horror game, RE4 2, Outlast, an arcade shooter, or MGS. RE7 had a lot of these elements but it blended them all together. Each section of RE8 feels like a different game, that was developed independently, and you don't know what you're going to get next as you go along. It was a kitchen sink game.

is it worth replaying it in the third person mode

Yeah, really comes together when you go to Mereau, in both gameplay and story. Dimitrescu was RE7-2, Beneviento was Outlast, then it went into basically mixing 4 and 7. The action Mereau and after was very rewarding, imo

I meant to play Village after I was finished with RE6 but I don't know if I can muster up enough willpower to see it through till the end. Its just so ehh.

I really didn't like 6 either
7 was great Outlast/shooter hybrid. Combat was meh, but story was fantastic and it was positively dripping with atmosphere. The first 2 acts of 8 are decent, after that the gameplay really improves, I was lovin it. Play 8, for sure. Play 7 if you can handle gameplay that takes a back seat to exploration and story.
