Sticking onions in the freezer for half an hour before cutting and/or turning on the kitchen fan while cutting are supposed to be two effective ways, but I tried freezing onions and then turning on fan and still got hit hard. Do I really have to resort to goggles? >___>

If you cut it correctly you can minimize the amount of chemicals released that make you cry.

If you just slice down the middle like a monster, embrace the tears

Some varieties of onions have less of the chemical compound that make you cry. Try those.

Oh I didnt read this right the first time.

Dont freeze your onion, chill it.

And like I said, use an extra sharp knife.

I wore contacts for years and thought everyone was being weak when crying with onions. Then I stopped wearing them and I can barely get through half an onion without losing control of my entire face.

So if you get some non-prescription contacts, that should work. Goggles seem good too.

I've tried chewing gum while cutting onions. I don't know how much it really helped because I've seemed to develop a tolerance for it now. It doesn't bother me anymore. It's strange because I don't cook with a lot of onions either.

Thanks, guys. Seems like keeping knife hot and being careful about how I cut are my best bets. I don't cook onions often, so doesn't make sense to get a sharper knife just for them

A sharper knife will serve you better across the board, it's going to be safer and give better results for everything. But i understand the hesitancy.

Someone else mentioned it but your very likely cutting the onion wrong. I can find an explanation tommorow but basically one part has most of the chemicals so you don't cut that part till very end

You should have a sharper knife in general. It doesn't only help with onions. It's MUCH safer and easier in general.

If there is a common piece of kitchen equipment you should never neglect, its keeping your knife sharp. It's pretty much #1 priority because both of its dangerous properties and how often you will use it.

I just wash the onion under the tap in between cuts, that usually works. Not sure if you're supposed to do that.
