Today was my fourth day of training and my first working in the ER itself. Literally the first patient on our list to interview passed away before we even made it to her room. Her notes showed that several attempts were made to try and save her. COVID was ruled out and, as far as I know, no drugs were involved.

I knew death was inevitable, but that really threw me for a loop. A twenty-year-old complains about chest pains early in the morning and is gone two hours later. I think the mental image of her family out in the hallway is going to be burned into my memory.

Damn... Yeah that's rough. Props to you TC, I don't think I could do it. I hope there are resources for you, if it ever gets to you, mentally. I know first responders have higher rates of depression because of all of the death they see.

It was a wake up call. That's for sure.

How is being an EMT? I'm sure you have tough moments, but I bet it feels rewarding overall.

My job is getting the patient's medical history (medications, allergies, etc.). The most direct way, when available, is to go into the patient's room and question them about it. If they're unresponsive or unreliable, then we look up their medical history and any pharmacy they may have filled at.

Sucks you had to go through that. It must be a good feeling to know that your work is so important though.

Best to get that experience out of the way early. Figure out if you can deal with it or not. Trust it won't be like losing someone when you responded to the code.

Sorry to hear that, but you're gonna have to get used to death >_> I deal with it all the time on the street. Only 30% of Code Blues in a prehospital setting survive. It's hard to see the family upset but you gotta tune it out and just strive to keep going and keep improving: it's your responsibility as a healthcare worker to learn and improve to help people.

All you can do is apply your training and if it wasn't meant to be, it wasnt meant to be.

I did a year of 5PM - 8AM shifts as the only doctor in a rural hospital.

Never again. Hats off to anyone who can do that for longer.

I'm a clinical pharmacist and cover many service lines including the ED. In fact I'm working in the ED now.

Currently there's a patient in psych hold singing a not so bad rendition of Alicia Keys' Empire State of Mind.

It's CE and the dude didn't even meet the patient so it's not like he's actually kicking someone while they're down.

Honestly, I don't know how long I'll be here. I don't think I'd want to be on overnight shift for a year or more.
