I loved the 3D games before SS, and definitely could not get into SS despite its merits. I liked parts of BotW. So far I'm liking the shenanigans videos for TotK, but have yet to put the money forward for it. If future Zeldas find a middle ground between the first LoZ, BotW/TotK, and OoT/MM/TP, I might be all for it.

These aren't the only two options

I'd be less skeptical if TotK did a single thing to address the shortcomings of BotW, which it didn't. They filed any complaints directly into the trashbin.

Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess were my favorites because I love games that other people hate apparently.

Couldn't finish Majora's mask, but I can't deny the aesthetics.

Wind Waker was the only mainstream Zelda that I didn't like.

This is what I mean by a middle ground. The dark world in aLttP almost does this for half of it, and its would-be-remake turned sequel LBW tried its own take on it, where there is definitely a set progression in the narrative or where you need or want to go, but you can choose the order.

Like in aLttP I always leave the first dark world dungeon after getting the hammer to grab the gloves from the fourth dungeon, and then I ask myself where I want to go from there. Temper my sword, run to the ice palace, or dive into the second or third dungeon? Options!

Just like the first LoZ. You have the items to get into any dungeon? Have your pick as to where to go. But! Unlike LoZ, there's a narrative guiding you, some quests to complete, and so on.

If a future Zelda game can balance it where we can explore and do fun things in the world like TotK, collect useful items in the world more like in aLttP, and have meaningful dungeons like aLttP through TP, and do this without gimmick controls like motion controls or the DS game nonsense--I hate that mic and its implementation so much, I swear to all of the gods of all pantheons--I'd be totally for it. Drop us into the world like LoZ and BotW. Give us a compelling narrative guide. Make the major locations and enemy strongholds matter more than "lol gonna get some loot now." I know this can be done. It takes effort, and I hope the successes of BotW and TotK at least show the effort can and will be worthwhile.

The problem is it makes I much less open world When you have items you need to get to places, it feel way more linear But I think they want to leave it fully open Go anywhere and do anything from the start. If you start adding items, it can make it harder to keep it fully open. With something like BotW and TotK, after the tutorial areas, you can go anywhere, and have all your tools at your disposal (Though you still need more heart and stamina) Adding items either makes then needed for certain areas, or they feel useless if their only real use is in the one dungeon it came from So, maybe theyre having trouble finding a happy medium because of that

ALBW managed to strike a pretty happy medium there, in that you had ready access to different items that opened up different parts of the world/dungeons, and could pick and choose which ones you wanted. It fell short in that each item was gated behind rupees and the only thing you had to do to just take all of them was farm a bit, kind of making the choice pointless, but I could get behind bringing that concept back with some tweaks. Maybe stick with rupees for the initial rental, but only allow one to be rented at a time, and have a sidequest unlock after that item's dungeon that enhances the item and allows you to keep it permanently.

I thought of ALBW But the difference is that world wasnt open You needed items to get to a lot places Though, some were just weapons, like the bow You could rent or buy most of the items right away (sans the sand rod for story stuff), but you to get the stuff to even get to the dungeons And I think Nintendo actually wants to keep it open to where you can go anywhere and do anything from the get-go without having to get more stuff Which becomes less possible when doing stuff like in ALBW Meaning you either need the items to get around (which they probably want to avoid), or making them only useful in one specific dungeon At least, I think thats why theyre avoiding it Idk I like just being able to go off without having to get extra stuff I mean, even in this game, as soon as I got the paraglider, I just went everywhere. I havent even done the Robbie Chasm quest, but have gotten all the towers, all the glyphs, the Master Sword, the Champions Clothes, found all the stables, and like a bunch of side quests and stuff The only story I started was stuff in the Rito area, and that was accidental But thats just how I like open world games, so

You can take pictures of enemies, wildlife, materials, and treasures. Once you get a picture of it, it goes into the Compendium and you can read info about the subject and its location. Not all the materials have entries though, like I think a Keese Eyeball had an entry but a Keese Wing does not

I can't remember if there's an NPC that wants to see them but I do remember there being an NPC in BotW who would sell you pictures that you could fill the Compendium up with, and they were generally much nicer pictures than the ones players will take

It's not truly open, but it does offer a similar degree of freedom while preserving the item-based progression that has characterized the Zelda series for so much of its existence. Balancing freedom with meaningful progression is always a bit tricky, and BotW leaned a little too far in the freedom direction, I found. Past the Plateau, nothing new you found ever really enabled anything you couldn't already have done some other way, aside from a couple specific examples (like the gerudo disguise letting you into the town). The extent of progression there was pretty much limited to "now I have enough stamina to climb this cliff," which doesn't exactly feel exciting. TotK does a bit more in that regard by letting you find new devices to use, even if you can already solve most of the problems those devices might help with by sticking more logs together or abusing Ultrahand+Recall, so that's nice, but it's still a very different experience from, say, Adult Link the first time he walks out of the Temple of Time in OoT and Adult Link walking into Ganon's Castle.

But thats kind of the point of open world (At least Zelda Open World) The freedom to do whatever you want and go anywhere you want without having to wait to do something For example, those cliff could have already been climbed by having enough stamina food I like being able to just go where I please from the start At least when its an open world game
