Has this current console gen been a flop?

Dunno - I haven't been interested enough by anything to buy a PS5/other. Is that an answer?

If you are a consumer that always buys the newest console, then maybe.

I wouldn't necessarily say it was a flop, because that kind of implies it failed due to its own flaws. But I'd definitely say it failed.

I think what absolutely killed this generation was how hard it became to get the newer consoles. If there was a ton of must-own games that were only available on the newer consoles people might have been more willing to make the effort, but the last decade has been a bad one for worthwhile games and most of the good ones are still available on the previous gen consoles, so there was never really much motivation to try.

Now with talk of the PS6 and next iteration of XBox not being far off, it feels like both Sony and Microsoft have written this generation off entirely. Hopefully they'll do a better job getting product out into the world next time.

Wait not far off? I thought Sony was targeting 2027 or 2028 for PS6.

Nintendo is the only one who is producing more than a glorified pc with baby specs, and has been for some time.

L o fuckin l, none of them have even close to the same specs as my PC. You're picking a side for me that I am not taking. I'm not a console gamer. The only one I would consider would be a switch because it's the only one that can do what my pc can't, and be portable. They're all doo doo to me

Usually by this point in the gen, there wouldn't be so many cross-gen games still releasing, and there'd be more than a couple worthwhile exclusives

But y'know pandemic and supply issues etc.

Ive enjoyed both my Switch and PS5, so Id say it hasnt been a flop But thats just how I feel

But they have their own IPs that they make the most out of Which can push them past the other systems And with it being portable, many of the indie games I have on steam are now on there, too And I can play on the go

I dont think he was saying switch was strong J think he was saying that the other two consoles were basically making PC with baby specs, where Nintendo was just making a console for gaming I could be wrong, but thats how I read it. It didnt sound like he was saying switch was strong to me

Even in his other posts, it doesnt ever sound like hes ever saying switch is strong

consoles are readily available almost everywhere now, ps6 isnt going to be releasing until 2027-2028. they didnt write anything off, they always plan for future consoles many years in advance.

The other are made for gaming, but they like to be made for more than just gaming They are basically being used as pseudo-computers But Nintendo systems are usually made just for gaming instead of a bunch of stuff And its true that not everyone wants portable But lots of people do like it. And like being able to undock it to play at home Basically, nothing in my posts changes Its not like anything in the response refutes anything Thats what I mean, as least

Nope, you nailed it.

It is defiantly the worse in a long time.

The switch is the only current console that is doing anything to justify itself by being different and having a genuinely good gimmick.

There was simply no purpose to making new sony or microsoft consoles. There hasn't been what I could consider a generational shift in technology that they have made use of. Hell I don't even know if I'm aware of what the current xbox is called. They're pointless.

I think the point is that Nintendo's lane is doing something different aside from "MORE POWER" every generation. They tried that with the Gamecube and biffed it, so they changed their strategy. Wii was gimmicky, but they sold a shit ton of them. WiiU had AWFUL marketing for what was honestly a cool little system, and crashed with that. Switch seems to have hit the sweet spot of gimmicky and functional for people. It's pretty fun as a companion for another console or PC if you play on that.

I don't know because I haven't had time to keep up to date.

Switch really is the only current console that is doing something other than just being a very limited PC, and it's the only one with exclusives that are worth a damn. I have a Switch and a quality PC and I feel like I've missed exactly 0 games worth playing this gen.

If you were asking about individual systems, this would be easier to answer. I will say that for all the flak it gets for weak hardware, the Switch is easily the best system to buy if you also have a game-worthy PC.

This has been yet another generation where Nintendo+PC is the clear winner. The vast majority of multi-plat stuff (and even a lot of former exclusives, more so than previous generations) also ends up on PC with better potential performance, more accessibility (consistent sales that require no effort to find, the option of lowering settings to avoid having to buy new hardware, etc.), and community-generated improvements in many cases. The Switch offers more and often better exclusives than what the alternatives provide (especially when those other exclusives end up coming to PC anyway), with a system that offers something beyond "a PC that you can't do anything other than game with" (though the Steam deck has made some strides in also filling that niche, albeit at a much less attractive price point).

I don't play new video games anymore so I'm not sure.

There has been a recent trend of PC ports releasing with absolutely abysmal performance. Not sure if it's a business tactic, shitty DRM, or just poor optimization.

OK, yes, I have a Switch. Mentally I suppose I feel like the Switch has been out long enough to be previous generation...but I suppose not.

If we're counting it, then the generation is...OK. The Switch serves it's purpose fairly well, although it irritated me how quickly the little controllers (all four) broke/developed drift...and I personally have little interest in "gaming on the go". The Pro controller saved it for me.

portable gaming was cooler when i was younger and i had mommy and daddy to drive me around every where. I have such fond memories of playing my psp in the car on road-trips lol

I'd say no. The consoles are selling well and games seem to be coming out regularly that I'm interested in. It also seems the stock shortages are improving. I do wish they would leave last gen behind though.

Xbox Series holds no interest for me.
I've never even seen a PS5 in person.

Pretty much.

My PC can do everything the current consoles can and more.

But it sure as hell can't match the Switch's convenience. The fact that it's portable but I can set up like a TV with a normal fucking controller in my hands is everything. I just wish the kickstand wasn't so flimsy and cheap.

I wouldn't say a flop but in my opinion gaming is less than the old days when you would buy a console with two controllers and a pack in game which is what I remember from my childhood and Nintendo consoles and I always had a blast playing for hours.

Now it seems all the consoles and gaming companies are focused on selling add-ons for games as opposed to making really good games.

I used to be a big fan of sports games but then the two biggest sports basketball and football got swallowed up by two companies who own the NFL and NBA licenses and they just put out the same old games year in year out with "My Team" or "Ultimate Team" modes designed to sell card packs in a quest to get the best players which seem to come in any variety of forms.
