I've finally started watching some older shows. I just watched Sixteen and Produce 101 in the last couple weeks, probably Produce 48 next. I knew some results (especially for Twice, and only a couple from IOI), but I'm really loving seeing more of the idols and it's helping me learn who is who and where they are. Not to discuss a 7 year old show, but my faves in P101 were Yoojung, Chungha, Jeon Soyeon, and Im Nayoung. The middle two were biases because I knew them already. I'm gaining a lot more appreciation for some of their talents too, but the eliminations are killing me.

Not sure what other shows I might wanna watch. I've been keeping up with Fearless Kura, might poke around into more like that. There are plenty of groups I love that I don't know most of the members.

I like that they went with a different tone. Does Wonyoung more justice and has Leeseo in a range where she's in more control of her pitch.

Not sure how I feel about the execution of the concept. The hook/chorus remains to be in the same repetitive style they lean on.

*YamaChan on an alt since my main is purged till early April

I liked the song but I don't love it. The rap really felt more like filler than they normally do. Would've greatly preferred the song without it. The aesthetic of the MV are really eye-catching and sync well with the song.

Also people are mad Liz, the main vocal, got 6 seconds of lines. Yikes

Seems like they traded off with the complaints that Gaeul was short of lines previously.
I'd think the overall problem is the short song runtimes, and furthermore could apparently be an issue in songwriting to extend the songs. Like you said, that rap was seemingly filler. It was in passing.

I'm not sure if being a B-Side puts this in a different light. Apparently some people aren't feeling that the concept really translates. "Nineteens Kitsch" is still beyond me.

Again thanks for making these threads and keeping them up, Kaz, it's nice to have.

Solid Ive, yeah their lyrics are usually silly, but it's "nineties kitsch"... I think nineteen is just a bad translation that's not even a translation. Sorry but looks like another Konglish attack. Isn't it? Like, the lyrics are actually just "nineties"... okay now I'm confused.

Absolutely, I wanted to cheer you on! Those are great faves, personally I was complete Sejeong trash all through Produce, IOI and gugudan. How did you like Sohye? Sohye pretty much was P101. But maybe one needs to appreciate the show just from a show perspective to like her lol...

Yeah, it's very interesting to follow idols trajectories afterwards. As for other shows, I mean just survival from back then I would suggest Mix Nine and The Unit. Also Kpop Star although you'll see mostly soloists from there, there are also many girls from groups who have appeared. And I love fromis so for me Idol School would be required lol. More recently we had Girls Planet 999 and My Teenage Girl. And yeah this year we should be getting I Land 2. But there's so many more even just for survival. I always go crazy for these shows. Actually that reminds me I have yet to watch Girls Reverse lol.

Got my Tix to TWICE in SoFi

Happy NMIXX got their first win ever and got to show their live vocals in the encore and were heavily praised for it

Also really happy that FIFTY FIFTY made the Billboard Hot 100. Tik tok viral factor aside, they're in good company as the only previous kpop groups to hit it are Wonder Girls, BTS, BP, TWICE and NewJeans. Fastest to do it from debut too.

Also really looking forward to what XG has in store for the future. Left Right is such a banger. Although they're in a weird spot like...are they really considered kpop since their songs are all in English and they're mainly a j group? I just like that Jackson Wang called them A Pop lol

Beautiful time for kpop right now

I wouldn't have voted for her, but I didn't hate her. I liked her determination, but it did bother me when she did better than more talented girls who went out their way to help. At least she wasn't a detriment to IOI afaik. I would have been more upset if she knocked Yeonjung out rather than Hyeri.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've heard of most of these. At this point I think it's more about the show than the actual group that comes out of it, though I like Kep1er (but don't know the members) and the others are fine. I was interested in Girls Re:verse because I think Hyunjin is in it, but I don't know about the virtual thing. I just finished episode 4 of P48 and I'm coping with these cameramen having never heard of Chaewon.

I think I glossed over them at first, but yeah they are good. I like when small groups have success and hope their label doesn't ignore them.

Speaking of bad labels, I don't know what happened with MNH, but Chungha is free from them next month. I really hope she continues with someone else because she is way too good. And we didn't get Bare&Rare part 2. MNH also lost BVNDIT and I'm mad at them for that.

Part of me is thinking YG and Black Label have created this practice of generating an impression of "rarity" by spreading out releases, like to how some limited material goods get released.

I could be wrong as there are so many variables. BP's spreading of releases was probably due to having a packed schedule for solo projects outside of music.

But with Somi I don't get why they wouldn't be able to push at least a single. Maybe a resources issue and more was put towards Taeyang? Believe that's what happened at MNH and Chungha

by far the prettiest BP solo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YudHcBIxlYw

Song is a little vague, and I felt there were missed opportunities in changing notes through the second verse and build up in the pre-chorus. I can't say there's any memorable parts for me in terms of sound, although her vocals in general were nice.

Not big on the expensive/materialistic exhibition, but at least lyrically it wasn't the same Lisa or BP tragedy. I also get that she's been very vested in fashion.

B-Side:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuxAOC6RU9c
Right now I'm liking this track more than the actual single, but I don't like the instrumental hook wasting 20 seconds at a time like that. Both songs have a bit of a short runtime.

I also want to watch Leniverse and maybe Yena's animal detective or Chuu can do it, at least those are short episodes. It's a lot I'm trying to catch up on. I also saw Soyeon is on My Teenage Girl and Fantasy Boys so I'll probably at least watch the first one.

Also I have to say that I've come to have some newfound respect for Nmixx, musically. It's still a little too much for me but I've come to understand what they're doing and unlike some other groups which yeah no I can at least see the thought and effort that goes with them. I don't know maybe I said almost as much before, if not I should have. And now I'm even actually caring that Jinni left.

I still sum up NMIXX as great talent, lack luster music.

"Love Me Like This" is probably their most likeable track imo, but - no pun intended - I don't necessarily love it. It's just relative to what they released before, and that bar was not high.

The attempt at a unique approach is definitely something I could get behind, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Different just to be different doesn't really pass.

I think this was known already but Unforgiven is their first full album, I'm getting excited!

I just finished Produce 48 so I'll just spoiler this whole section:

This whole season felt like a mess and the rankings were all over the place, but I watched it anyway for the girls. I also liked the original songs on P101 much better, but I like IZ*ONE more as a group. I had several who I was rooting for here and there, Le Sserafim girls aside, and some didn't even make top 30, but I was pretty happy with the final 12. I was thinking the only changes I probably would have made was Cho Won or Ga Eun for Hye Won or Minju or Chae Yeon, then I find out several people were arrested for keeping them out of the final lineup so that's cool. As far as I know, this was only an issue for the Produce shows and Idol School? So dumb either way, at least Cho Won got Lightsum.

I remember a Starship collab doing similar for Gatorade I think last year, and Iz*One for Pepsi Zero.

Stuffs wild.

Thing that strikes me about this one is there's a continuation with NJ being depicted as kids/students. One reason I assume is to keep things relatively appropriate, but I think Ador/Hybe is eating it up for they're not going to be this young for long. This will exist as a distinct era in their work as maybe eventually they break into the more adult space of themes. I imagine that would be a new challenge as that's arguably over saturated compared to youthful themes.

As far as everyone knows, yeah, but who knows and then other shows had other systems going on that they could sneak in the rigging, and then like YG ended up not even making a group, the bastard. But that's survival for you, there's only x spots and everyone wishes they could shuffle in this or that contestant. We all have one or two for every show, but for example for IZONE I actually would have taken out Chaewon see, cuz for me she was just Eunbi's junior who was cute and had a good voice. So you never know, you just gotta roll with it and hope for the best I think. But yeah that makes it extra upsetting when you find out they lied about it. But it's interesting that some of the girls WERE voted in... and some were rigged in. And we'll probably never know which and that's probably best.

Fifty fifty just keeps rising. 13 million monthly listeners on Spotify, passing up TWICE and becoming the 6th most followed kpop act. This is all off of only having 5 songs and only selling about 12k~ of their last album (last time I checked). Love a good underdog story

It is a great underdog story. Fifty fifty is on a trajectory we've never seen before in K-Pop.

Their song isn't even in the top 200 on Melon, the largest digital chart in South Korea, but they continue to rise on Spotify, and most impressively, on the Billboard Hot 100.

I'm not sure how this will translate to their future success, but the hope is that their company is competent enough to capitalize on it properly.

We've seen plenty of examples of groups from some small shitbox company get some unexpected/viral hit then disappear nearly as fast because those kinds of companies have no idea how to actually capitalize on it and turn it into long term success.

I wish the best for them but not holding my breath that any significant amount of people will really care about them after a comeback or two.
