I feel like the term remake doesn't do them enough justice considering most games labeled remake don't make nearly close to enough changes as these. They stay true to the original while enhancing that. FF7 and RE4 take the original concept and complete re-imagine it. So, I would say there are 4 bins:

1. Re-Release - Same exact game no changes put on another system
2. Re-master - Graphical update to fit the more modern systems it is being put on
3. Re-make - Graphical and gameplay overhaul but stays true to the original game
4. Re-imagine - Takes the characters and ideas from the first game then builds a completely different and new experience

idk that is just what I heard. Could be wrong on that.

I feel like there aren't many "remakes" like FF7R where it's a completely new story essentially. That is a reimagining for sure.

The Resident Evil 4 remake does have a bunch of changes to the story

Then you have games like God of War(2018) that are just straight up new games using the same title as an older game in the series, since the developers just didn't give a fuck.

That game kicked ass though

EA did that with Need For Speed Hot Pursuit after Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit and Need For Speed Hot Pursuit II were already out. Then later remastered Need For Speed Hot Pursuit. Which one did they remaster? Good question.

EA definitely sets the bar for not caring about previous game titles. Did the same with Star Wars Battlefront. They also called the 25th anniversary Madden game Madden 25. Which leads to the question. What will they do when the Madden series reaches 2025? Probably just ignore it and call it Madden 25 as well.

Yeah I meant they just didn't care about the title of the game, since they knew they could call it whatever they wanted and it'd still be amazing.

I think the trick they pulled there is that Remake isn't just describing what it is, it's a subtitle the same way FF7: Advent Children or FF7 Crisis Core is. Story wise, you're both trying to stop Sephiroth from remaking the game's story to suit him and trying to remake it to suit Cloud.

Yea the word is a Trojan horse that's more obvious with the upcoming stuff.
