It's my #1 game of all time, but geez idk what they were thinking with some of these balancing decisions >_>

-There are tons of equipment that raise your physical attack but almost nothing that raises your magic attack, so by the end of the game, your regular attacks are usually doing more damage than your special attacks and thus there is almost no reason to use single target special attacks.

-Bowser is supposed to be the "power house" of the party and joins with fantastic stats and high attack, but his stat growth is terrible! So by the end of the game, all his stats are some of the lowest out of everyone and his attack stat is outclassed by the fucking mage of the party. Plus all his equipment is awful too. His best weapon only gives him +40 while everyone else's gives +70-90.

-In the very first town, there is a full revive item that you can buy for 5 coins, while full heal items cost like 40 coins at the end of the game. So its way cheaper to just have everyone go balls out and attack until they die and then just revive them at full health with a super cheap item >_>

-Peach joins with a spell that heals the entire party to near max HP and heals all their status ailments for almost no MP cost, so it's easy to just spam that and keep everyone topped off forever. And if you equip her with the Lazy Shell armor, she's basically invincible and won't die.

-Geno gets a spell that literally raises all your stats by 50% for the entire fight and it also costs almost no MP too. There's also relatively cheap items that let you do that too.

Even though though the game is piss easy cuz of these, I still love it and highly recommend it. And it also unironically pioneered jiggle physics on titties. Can't wait for Geno to be in Smash 6!

Have you checked if there's any mods or hacks for the game, that address these balance issues? Obviously that would mean playing a PC version of the game, which I don't know if you have access to.

That is *the* party to break the game with. I always used Geno and Bowser just for the slight challenge

Balance doesn't matter in single-player games.

They were thinking that SMRPG is a goofy, fun, short RPGs for kids, because Nintendo games of that era were still designed expressly for kids to enjoy. The two biggest other SNES RPGs at the time - FF 6 and Chrono Trigger - weren't particularly difficult either. 'Balancing' isn't as fun to a kid as 'getting a giant fuck-off turtle shell that can absolutely obliterate the enemy.'

Plus each party member's arc of usefulness roughly corresponds to their relevance to the plot: Mallow and Bowser are useful when you first get them and shortly thereafter, while Peach and Geno are the ideal late-game party members (the former simply because she's the last to join, and the latter because he's the most relevant party member to the core plot of repairing the Star Road).

Geno barely talks outside the Forest Maze, Star Hill, and Factory. I wish he had more dialogue besides the very very occasional one line when the party is talking about stuff. Bowser getting tons of dialogue is still amazing at least >_>

The breaking point in SMRPG is that damage taken is subtraction based rather divisible. That means every one point of defense reduces damage by one. Stack enough defense and everything does 1 damage. It's common for certain enemy attacks and spells to do 1 damage with the right equipment. Mario reaches level 2 in the mushroom way and becomes invincible to every monster in that area.

I mean the game is suppose to be easy, but a lot of RPGs don't use subtraction in damage calculations because of how easy to crumbles to any intelligent player.

This is why they should do an HD2D Remake or whatever

Give Peach the Lazy Shell Armour and Mario the Lazy Shell weapon and youve broken the game.

It's one of my all-time favorites but I'll never deny that it's an entry-level RPG for people new to the genre, and not a deep or complicated one.

Like was mentioned above, it's simple by design because it was designed for kids.

100 Super Jumps is such bullshit. It blows my mind that they put something that precise in a game so easy. It's like 2-frame timing after the 16th jump. I've never done it legit

I dont think that's broken. It only works on normal enemies (except for Exor due to a glitch) and it takes a good chunk of MP to pull off. I think it's fine. It's just a more reliable death spell

100 super jumps is overkill. The Super Suit is a better lazy shell. Heck, the attack scarf at 30 jumps is overkill since it makes Mario invincible to everything except status effects.

It is kinda funny that SMRPG - the babby-est of the 3 big SNES RPGs at the time - threw in an optional uber-boss when such things were absent from the other two. I sometimes got the feeling that Atma (Ultima Buster) was supposed to fill this niche in FF 6, but they majorly missed the mark challenge-wise if that was supposed to be the case (though maybe the Brachiosaurs were supposed to be the secret ubers?). Still, Culex is a relatively low challenge compared to such uber-bosses as Emerald and Ruby Weapon that came along a couple years later, and is a cakewalk by modern standards.

The 100 Super Jumps was clearly designed by some stark-raving lunatic who broke into the Squaresoft studios one night, and no one noticed until the game was already shipped.

I can usually get the 100 jumps by monstro town. I level up til I get it before fighting croco so I can start as early as possible.

It is one of my favorite games especially the randomizer of the game.

Played it today and got to Boosters tower and the game crashed and didn't have a recent save so I fucking quit

It is interesting to see the wise mystic Geno throw a temper tantrum when you try and leave Star Hill without collecting the star.

But for many players this was their first. So while I love it to death it was holding your hand in many places. And other times were not going to crunch the numbers like that.

That was fun! I beat it in 4 hours, got Super Suits for everyone at a shop, and it was neat to finally mess around with party configurations that dont have Mario in them >_>

I think that's why I prefer Superstar Saga because it isn't extremely easy like Mario RPG.
