Board 8 > What Pokemon games are necessary right now? (3DS onward)

I currently have X, Alpha Sapphire, and Moon. I don't have anything except Legends Arceus after that (though many things before them).

Would Ultra Sun be a worthwhile expense when I just beated Moon last week? I didn't particularly enjoy it at all until resuming it, and even then I felt like the writing was even worse than normal and there wasn't much challenge even when I tried to make it harder. They really insist on making me feel like I need the game to tell me what to do...

I don't have Sword/Shield or Scarlet/Violet. My Living Dex is complete through Gen 6 with only a few holes in Gen 7, mainly legendary Pokmon and gifts like Null (who can't breed), if any of that matters. I know Sword would help me fill in some holes from Moon, so that's what I would get.

Should I get Ultra Sun before the eShop closure? Should I instead use this Nintendo account credit for Sword or Violet? I can only afford one at present... ugh... I can't make up my mind.

A couple of the new Ultra Beasts introduced in US/UM are available from the Sw/Sh DLC, but they're kind of a pain to get that way. Though getting them through the GTS is always a potential option too I guess.

SwSh and SV are both great but if you can only get one I'd go with SV

Ultra Sun/Moon were pretty bad IMO. They're 3rd versions like Yellow, Platinum, etc. except there's 2 of them and they don't really add a lot in comparison to Emerald or Platinum. And the story changes are generally bad.

IMO the main highlights of the 3DS and Switch games are OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire and Scarlet/Violet.

• Legends: Arceus might be worth checking out too, but I didn't particularly care for it.
• X/Y were great at the time but OR/AS copied most of its best features.
• The others are all very skippable IMO.

If you're getting Sword anyway, I'd just suggest buying the DLC to get the USUM Ultra Beasts. Neither USUM or SwSh is all that great (especially if you didn't like vanilla SM), so I'd suggest going with the cheaper option, which is the Sword DLC.

I think USUM is a lot better than XY.

Or, if all else fails, having someone "create" them for me. Or get the thing to do it myself. For Gen 8 and later, I can simply use the GTS via HOME, then maybe evolve and breed things in Shining Pearl (forgot I bought that cheap last year - never started it).

Sword seems to have very mixed opinions about it. S/V seem to be very well-liked, probably due to some of the Legends Arceus carryover. That game was a breath of fresh air because it was the first time Pokmon actually felt different, that they deviated from the formula in ways that the trials in S&M did not. That was really just gym battles with a different coat of paint. Arceus was completely different, which got S/V to try to do some things differently, too.

I think I'll pass on US/UM if the only reason to get it is Poipole and whatever else. Can I get the Sword DLC by itself...? I didn't think that was possible.

You can't, which is why I said it's the cheaper option if you were planning on getting Sword anyway. If you aren't getting Sword, then you're better off getting USUM, since that's only $40 compared to $90 for SwSh + DLC.

No Gen 8 Pokemon can be transferred to BDSP, so you'll either have to pay for a Home subscription to store all the Gen 8 mons, or buy Sword to store them in. You might be able to get away with SV and storing the inaccessible Gen 8s in Home, but I don't know if there's less than 30 Gen 8s inaccessible in SV.

I count 29 Gen 8 Pokemon on Serebii's list of SV unobtainables, 31 if you count Meltan/Melmetal which can only be obtained in Go and from there transferred into Let's Go or Home (and then from Home into SwSh).

I am working on getting everything into HOME as soon as I, well, get home. I may go with Sword if there's ever a sale like there was when I got BDSP (half price at Target, I told the board, didn't I?). But the chance of that happening.... yeah, right. Odd since you would think they would now that SV has been out for four months. Nintendo only ever puts games on sale after the next in the series has been out for a while.

I can try to earn a little money with this freelance contract I signed and should be able to pay for more. Right now I'm playing White 2 for no reason though.

How? I've spent several hours trying and no luck (trainer is only level 7). I also just had like 20 Pokmon break out in a row and then flee. I just want to get my Living Dex stuff and be done without spending any money. This game is clearly a money sink.

Don't you just need to send something over to Home to get the mystery box, then you open it and catch a Meltan? I think you'll have to wait another day to be able to transfer it, but that's it. Then you get Melmetal for free because you transferred a Pokemon from GO.

There's a collection challenge right now in Pokmon go called "Let's Go" or something. You just need to catch four different mons and the prize is a Meltan. Think it only goes for another three days.

Yeah exactly. It isn't caught in the wild otherwise.

Or you can complete the quest notdave mentioned within a few days. You need to catch a good amount to evolve to Melmetal though.

has nintendo foxed the crazy bugs from SV?

Trying to figure out how to get all this to work. My parents' Internet is having issues with some devices, including my phone and Switch (but oddly not my 3DS). I've caught more than enough Pokmon so I just need the Mystery Box. There's a lot to figure out here!

I'll be home tomorrow night so I can try then. Thanks for that tip - I can get both Meltan and its Evo that way!

Thanks for the tips guys, I got Meltan and Melmetal! It was a pain linking GO to Home, but downloading the Home app on my phone fixed it

Did you maybe teleport between distant locations (either accidentally, bad wifi, or on purpose)? If so you could have been briefly softbanned for moving too quickly. When that happens, Pokemon always flee after one ball until the time you were "supposed" to arrive at your current location.

Then I sent over five Meltan (I'll send more later but I ran out of Poke Balls and need to walk anyway). But yes. The deed is done. Now to trade some of these extra Meltan for a Poipole or two...

They're not letting me trade any Meltan. Dammit. Need a new plan.
