This, too many people really don't care enough until they actually see it for themselves, by which time it is already far too late.
Right now we're already guaranteed that it's gonna get bad. It's up to us (humanity in general, meaning governments, companies and citizens/consumers like us, without pointing fingers saying "dem first") whether we let it get to that, or let it get worse to the point of making the planet uninhabitable for humanity.

Part of the big issue with this is that the worst case scenario isn't "We're all gonna die" its "Life is going to get vastly worse for the people on it" and that disconnect means a lot of people simply ignore it because of stuff like

Final Warning #2757973226798437

The rock that is planet earth is going to be here a couple more billion years regardless of what we do with it, but that doesn't mean it'll be remotely habitable for humans either.

This isn't a situation where we can all save the day in the 11th hour like a movie, and each of these final warnings are more "okay heres ANOTHER LEVEL OF SHIT THATS ABOUT TO GET MUCH WORSE" because we can't be bothered to do anything about it.

Does the cynicism from this board spill over into every topic? Maybe someone's got ideas other than it's already going to suck so why not let it suck even more, possibly to the point of the collapse of global food chains, from the same selfish behavior that put us in the sucky situation to begin with?

If you want to be mostly useless to the cause, fine, but at least understand why our society cannot afford to elect nationalist-leaning leaders, who don't give a shit about humanity's well being at large, without it coming back to fuck us in some major way, whether its extreme weather or mass extinction.

I totally understand the frustration and society needs to make major systemic changes, but before we can get there, we need it to become normalized in peoples' minds as to why. People can be guilt-tripped into doing the right thing, as religion has shown historically although sometimes the wrong thing too there. So there is some grassroots aspect to it, but I absolutely agree that we need to focus on more than just our own individual harmful behaviors.

That's more like it. It needs to be more in the public discussion of how these resources/technologies can prevent likely tragedy in the future. So increased awareness again would be a good thing. Speaking of hemp, it may be influencing my tone now so don't take me too seriously with this particular post.

Corporations produce to meet demands of consumers (and make a profit while doing it).
As long as consumers keep buying a lot of stuff that is bad for the environment (that they often don't even need), there is little motivation for a corporation to change to more environment-friendly methods.

IIRC this is actually about the 1 degree C global change and it's the 'final warning' on reversing it. Which means that people are just going to shrug about it. Nothing is really gonna change until it gets warm enough for sea levels to rise 20 feet anyway.

I, for one, agree that warnings are pointless. Why though? Because CE fucking proves it.

Maybe we should just start a meter for showing how screwed we are after this warning about the 1C reversible point falls on deaf ears.

Like we are killing this fucking planet. Even with the small, renewable resources like trees. We are estimated to run out of trees in 200 fucking years at this pace. It's not even about "meaningless earnings lol" at this point.

Just admit tjat we as human beings obviously don't have fucking breaks. No matter what the numbers or math show us we are going to keep blowing through everything there is until there's nothing left to take.

What a lot of people don't realize when they blow off these warnings is the delayed nature of how global warming works. When we emit GHGs into the atmosphere the temperature doesn't instantly rise, but it insulates the Earth and causes more warming over time as the equilibrium state changes.

If we stopped emitting all CO2 today the Earth would continue to get warmer for years or even decades.

Anyway scientists have continuously overstated our probability of changing things when we've shown no signs of slowing down so the fact that we're at the final, final, final warning means we're probably beyond fucked now.

Can't blame them, sounds like a good life.

Anyway, climate change skepticism, in this day and age, is very rarely in good faith. A whole lot of motivated reasoning coming from people who have been convinced by republican politicians that green policy will hurt their bottom line.
