Playing on the Series X I avoided skyrim at launch and want to give it a chance before starfield releases. Any recommendations on mods before I start?

Play vanilla first, see what you feel is missing then look for mods that might fill those gaps.

Intresting thanks for the quick responses my pc can't run modern games so I'm not familiar with mods on consoles. I don't mind playing the vanilla version I'd just like the best possible experience going into this game. Are the textures mods worth it at least?

The game is 13 years old now (Jesus), unless your laptop is really crappy or old itself, it should be able to run it.

Apocalypse: Magic of Skyrim (by the same mod author as Ordinator) gets my highest recommendation -
https://mods.bethesda.net/en/skyrim/mod-detail/2978320

It's Current Year, you don't need to waste dozens of hours experiencing firsthand how bland and underpowered vanilla Skyrim's magic is before modding it. Plus Apocalypse doesn't actually replace / alter anything, it's just additional spells.

Here's also a patch for Ordinator and Apocalypse - not essential, but good to have (place the patch underneath both Apocalypse and Ordinator in your Load Order):
https://mods.bethesda.net/en/skyrim/mod-detail/3000164

After you've gotten your fill of the game, you'll want to dive into some quest mods. Clockwork gets my highest recommendation in this regard. I would also recommend The Forgotten City, Falskaar, and Wyrmstooth. The Tools of Kagrenac, The Grey Cowl of Nocturnal, Undeath: Remastered, and Moon and Star are also great, but rely heavily on callbacks to previous games.

Also, playing on XB with mods can give you a perfectly satisfactory experience for your first time out. The modding comparison between platforms is roughly thus:
PC = porterhouse cooked to perfection
XB = a Big Mac
PS = a half-eaten shit-smeared Arby's sandwich you found in a dumpster

Ain't nothing wrong with a Big Mac, especially if you're new to modding and just want some essential game enhancements. The majority of popular / worthwhile mods are available on XB at this point.

Ye, a crappy computer more means that you shouldn't be doing any serious graphical overhauls. Not so much that you cannot play Skyrim on it. It's just too old to not run on modern stuffs. For perspective its graphics card recommendations are for a 470, which would kind of end up being pretty much an integrated card with good software at this stage. It's so old that it doesn't even really want you playing at 1080p, and that is kind of beyond low end for anything in the last 10-ish years. >.>

Adamant and Mysticism are also a good perk and magic overhaul. I'd recommend everything from that mod author.

I would say so. Most mods I use are aestethic. I have a texture one, a realistic weapon one (makes weapons more proportional instead of looking large and clunky), an improved map screen one and one that makes weather more interesting. I don't know if they specifically are on console but they seem like common mod ideas so I wouldn't be surprised if consoles at least had similar ones conceptually.

Is survival mode fun to play? I enjoyed it in fallout new Vegas but these days I'd only play with additional difficulty if its fun and not stressful. Or just I just play on the standard mode?

It's pretty good if you are into that sort of thing. It hits a pretty good balance of adding depth without being tedious.

That said I played it with a couple of other mods as well so take that with a grain of salt. The one I remember was one that added bedrolls and the like, but I'd bet there were some others as well.

Texture mods are something that's entirely up to you. If you find a particular aspect of the game to be visually ugly, it's almost guaranteed that plenty of other people did too, and someone made their own attempt to pretty it up. Most texture mods are a marked improvement, others will make you ask 'who in their right mind thinks this looks better?!' It's all a matter of personal taste.

You can either save yourself a headache and just download a single All-in-One overhaul of your choice, or you can attempt to piecemeal individual texture mods to better suit your tastes. I'm picky as hell, so I went with the latter - it takes up more mod slots if you're playing on XB, but it's worth it to get what I want.

It's fun. I'm playing a survival character now. It's tough early on though. I wouldn't recommend it until you know what you're doing and have a plan for the early game. I came too close for comfort to running out of food early on and the no fast travel and half carry weight makes it tough. It definitely gets easier when you get a foothold on things, but again, I recommend it only once you know the game pretty well.

(also worth noting, I'm playing it in Anniversary Edition which includes a lot of content from creation club which was originally mods)

Thanks for the responses I'll try out the texture mods and patch stuff. I'll try out the survival mode once I get use to the game reminds me of fallout and looks great for a ps3 game. Just have to get use to the janky control's.

The good thing about texture mods is that they're pretty much harmless; with very few exceptions you can pop them in and out of your game (even mid-game) without issue. Most other mods, particularly quest mods, gameplay overhauls, and anything containing custom scripts, can harm your save if you disable them mid-playthrough. Textures are basically just a coat of paint though, so you have more freedom to experiment with them. In most cases you can even mix and match textures (if two mods overlap the same texture, the one lower in the LO will be the one visible in-game). So if you like the way a particular AiO looks on the whole but want a different mountain texture, you can have a specific mountain texture mod overwrite without issue.

mods are pretty crazy with besthesda because the community is huge, and the games seem easy to mod. some of the games have entire stories done with new areas and stuff. some of which people consider to be better than the actual game.
