Yeah, it's excellent.

Even the inferior ps4 console version has been worth every minute I've put into it.

Do you think the base game is good enough to play? I think I have that and only that, none of the numerous expansions.

Plenty of stuff in the base game, though if you can get dlc over time it adds more longevity than adding it in all at once.

I saw it on sale with most the dlc for $122 today. I also have the same question

I tried it and everything went over my head. I'm too stupid for Paradox games.

I'd recommend looking up the "season pass" sets and seeing what they offer. The space pirate clan stuff is great as is most of the other dlc in that wave, but the next wave is super weak with the exception of probably my favorite dlc for the entire game because of some of the new race customization options.

The learning curve is like a 20 feet sheer rock cliff. If you can put in some time to watch tutorials or listen to them while doing something like cleaning your room, you'll have a better idea of what to do. Then you'll try and fall once or twice and have an idea of what you need to work on to make it further, research it, and then you'll make it over the wall after a few more tries. But once you're done learning the basics and are able to play the game you'll have a whole world open up and can then take time at your own leisure to learn the new mechanics, traits, and so on.

Stellaris is a Paradox game. If you like Paradox games you like Stellaris, if you don't then you won't. They don't really mess with the formula at all.

Love Stellaris but it's a much better game with the DLC so it depends on how much you're willing to spend.

Probably not. Just slowly get each DLC when they're on sale if you want the game. I assume they also have some shitty cosmetic DLC only packs like CK2 had.

Yeah, but it's a learning investment imo. There is a lot to know.

They just reworked first contact yet again lol. And that right there is my main issue with paradox games. Stellaris has been arguably feature complete for years and a lot of their dlc (First contact, Federations, etc.) rework existing content, they don't add to the game explicitly. A lot has been done to adjust existing features like pops, economy, rare minerals, jump drives (used to be 3 methods, now 1.5) and it's expensive to keep up.

Anyway Stellaris is a good game. If you have patience to deal with AI that is a bit stupid, and doing dry runs to figure out "builds", you can slowly learn the ins and outs and set up some amazing custom factions to both play as and fight against. It is very easy to lose if you don't know what you're doing, however, so expect a lot of 3+ hour saves to launch out the airlock when you realize you mismanaged your tech and economy hard and managed to piss off three neighbors at the same time.

wow, this game is like master of orion 2 on steroids. I thought i was getting the hang of it, then it all caught up and i feel overwhelmed.

yea I've only ever tried to play Crusader Kings 2. But all those games from that company are really tough to learn. I've always been intimidated by them

It's funny, I found I understood the game pretty well, yet I get overwhelmed playing Civilization.

Having said that Stellaris still kicked my ass.

I've been told CK is the least difficult game they make. One of the reasons it was the one I attempted

Should I be building a starbase in every star system and mining/research stations on every resource?

I kinda like it but also I feel like it has significantly more complexity than it really warrants having as a game. Like there's so many things going on but so many of them are very inconsequential

if you want to trial run the DLC just find a friend who has it and get them to host a multiplayer game for you

This might be one of the best games ever made.

It goes on sale pretty often. There's a Stellaris youtuber named Aspec that has a DLC tier list you could check out to see which DLC are worth prioritizing.
