At Goblet of Fire. I did not remember Ron being this much of a petty loser.

that's honestly the only character trait i can remember from him in the movies

The movies took every positive trait of Ron and gave it to other characters, mostly Hermione, up to and including word-for-word lines.

Oh yeah, Ron was AWFUL in the 4th.

The movie did so many things poorly.

-Ron
-Snape's backstory
-Voldemort's backstory
-The entirety of the Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince

Order of the Phoenix movie is fine.

Half-Blood Prince movie is indeed terrible.

I'm pretty sure I've never even seen HBP. I got annoyed at the changes the movies made so I just stopped going around Order of the Phoenix

I'm on the last movie, and that's the same feeling I have about Ron. I guess I need to read the books at some point.

That would be unfortunate because she's the best character in the movies (along with Snape).

Alright, in fairness, she's not the worst, she just gets treated like she's the worst and the book tries to gaslight you

I don't really remember that outside of the SPEW thing, which is just a writing black hole in general

The books are much better than the movies, especially 4-6. I think other characters treat Hermione poorly from time to time, but she's often right in the end anyway.

Why

Though if you really must submit yourself to that, the watchable films are 1, 2, 5 and 7.

Imo everything after 2 is watchable.

I really dislike 1 and 2.

I went home crying after seeing 1 (I was a kid), though I'm giving it the benefit if the doubt in retrospect because that was the first time watching a book-movie adaptation

2 is fine.

3 is mostly fine but it skips the main plot of the book (the marauders) at the end for no reason.

4 has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

5 should be bad considering the size of the book but they actually managed to capture the tone of the book and not skip anything important so the end product is good.

6 is mostly ok but it also skips the freaking final battle so meh.

7 is the best one.

8 is ok-ish but the final battle is meme levels of stupid.

I liked the first two because they had a different feel, better suited to the youth of the early books, but the tonal shift in Prisoner of Azkaban was too drastic; it should have been a more gradual change in that and Goblet of Fire.

I also stopped going to the movies after those, but did return for Battle of Hogwarts. I felt the fifth and sixth books were bloated as it was and when I tried to watch those movies, both bored me out of my mind.

I've always felt there are 4 actually good movies (6, 7, 8 and 3) two half-decent but mostly forgettable ones (4/5) and two I despise (1/2).

As someone who has never read the books and last watched any of the movies back when Deathly Hallows Pt2 came out, this would be my ranking based on memory.

PS/SS > HBP > PoA > DHpt2 > DHpt1 > CoS > GoF > OotP

Basically really liked the top 3, liked the DH parts, found the rest kinda eh.

Luna's really good in movie 5. She was already rad in the book, but even better in the movie.

strong disagree. it felt like 90% of the book was missing from the movie. sure, not everything they skipped was important but a lot of stuff was.

why they turned the longest book into a 2 hour movie is beyond me.

90% of every book is missing from movies and HP should have never been a movie series.

But Movie 5 seems to be aware of that and it focuses on getting the DA vs Umbridge war right. Which I tought it did when I watched it.

5 is the worst book so they just wanted to get it out of the way

as someone who's only seen the movies I really liked movies 3, 4, and 6

6 is by far the best movie. turning the series into a teen movie was brilliant

3 is by a huge margin the worst as a book fan.

5 is the second best book.

It's like if they made a movie adaptation of Phoenix Wright and removed the elevator flashback in the last case. So the villain hates Edgeworth for mysterious reasons and he must be taken down because he's a jerk I guess.

yeah, i am pretty confused by the takes in this thread. ron's jealousy of harry is his defining characteristic in books 4 and 7

i wouldn't say describing the books version of ron as nothing but a petty loser is doing him justice. he also has a sense of humor (a trait that's very poorly executed in the movies), for example.

Ron is my favourite character in the books I think

The entire lake scene in 7 is perfect imo

rupert grint's portrayal of ron is widely considered to be very funny by movie fans though

Top section of this has a few examples. I forgot they also gave some of Harry's lines to Hermione as well. Film makers really loved Hermione. It's not like they COMPLETELY changed Ron's character, and some of the examples above blows it a bit out of proportion, but yeah.

particularly steve kloves, the guy who wrote all of the movies except for OotP. he's said in interviews that hermione is his favorite harry potter character, and it really shows.
