Past 10 best picture winners IMO:
Parasite > Moonlight > EEAAO > Nomadland > Spotlight > 12YAS > Shape of Water > Birdman > CODA
(Haven't seen Green Book)

For this year, I've only seen EEAAO, Banshees, Tar, and All Quiet of the BP nominees. I like all 4 and am happy for Everything, but it's a shame that Tar and Banshees got shut out. Jamie Lee Curtis winning is baffling to me, even if they loved the movie that much Stephanie Hsu is right there!

The Academy likes to give out awards sometimes as almost de-facto "lifetime achievement" trophies.

I didn't think Michelle Yeoh was going to win the Oscar's, and I was glad to be wrong. This is a major milestone for the Asian community and what an incredible year for her and the EEAAO family. I'm sure the Daniel's never thought their film would do THIS well, and although it's a good film, I wouldn't say it's amazing

JLC winning so many awards is baffling. Did Stephanie Hsu win even a single one?? She was more prominent in the film and I think she did a better job overall

Yeah and that's the only justification for JLC.

Even then, Bassett is right there. That's why I was surprised by her. Bassett outperformed her and is "due" as well, and JLC is outperformed by Hsu.

I guess JLC is the centre of that venn diagram in that she's from EEAAO and is a "lifetime achievement" candidate, but she's second in both categories so she shouldn't win.

over the last week and a half or so i was pretty frustrated with the lack of options i was capable of streaming for BP. wasn't interested in elvis or avatar; all i was literally able to stream besides that was banshees of inisherin which was fun

that said i loved EEAAO. definitely happy it won!

and good call on AQWF, i forgot that

(also i thought avatar was available on disney+?)

The good news nowadays is that with so much being put on streaming, you can find super high quality versions of it almost instantly!

Yeah I think the only miss for me is JLC winning. Don't get it at all. Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser winning are huge for many different reasons and I'm extremely happy they won! And of the BP nominees that I saw this year EEAAO was easily the best, though I really liked Banshees too.

Parasite > EEAAO > Shape of Water > Birdman > 12 Years a Slave > Nomadland

I should watch CODA sometime. Kind of ambivalent on seeing Spotlight and Moonlight. Green Book meh. Probably benefited from a weaker field but guess I can't really judge since I haven't seen it.

This is where I fell. I saw it early last year and I knew it was good, great even. I was excited when it finally reached streaming and I watched it several more times and I still loved it. But I assumed pretty much throughout that it wasn't the kind of movie that would get recognition from the academy. The performances aside, the substance of the movie allowed itself at times to delve into incredibly wacky and outrageous circumstances and visuals, that I just figured would be too much of a turn off for serious movie critics.

I'm so glad to have been wrong, but I'm not confident we'll see a movie with a similar trajectory again for a long time.

There were some solid noms the year of Green Book (A Star is Born, BlacKKKlansman, and The Favourite all would have been memorable picks), they just decided to go with the overly safe, racism explained for white people movie. It's not bad in the context of that, the lead has a good performance and it's also a Peter Farrelly directed road trip movie with some comedic bits and you can see pieces of his other stuff in there, but it was very much an eyerolly pick.

Oh for sure, A Star is Born was pretty good and BlacKKKlansman was easily my favorite of the nominees that year. Didn't care for The Favourite all that much but it was objectively good. But yeah, it was just really easy for them to go the safe route with no "slam dunk" winner.

Im less mad about Green Book as the likely number 2 that year was Bohemian Rhapsody which is one of the worst films to ever be nominated for Best Picture. By contrast Elvis is much, much better than that, at least it had an all-time great performance at its core, one who actually sings at that. Also on Elvis I think it is a case where it deserves nominations for Actor, Cinematography, Costumes, Sound and so on so they added up to a Best Picture nomination.

Parasite>Spotlight>EEAO>Nomadland>Moonlight>CODA>12 Years A Slave>The Shape of Water>Birdman>Green Book

The top eight are all great films, Birdman I have mixed feelings on and Green Book is alright. Generally since they widened the membership and changed the rules in 2019 theyve been a lot better.
