Yes, because we'll be returning to the time zone we should be in.

Congress passed a unanimous resolution last year to make this the last time we ever change the clocks. So of course, after literal perfect harmony in the Senate, which never happens, it's basically stalling out in the House.

I'm fine with it either way as-is.

(Though I'd also say that even if it is the right thing to do, we're pretty much dealing with it in the worst possible way, which is par for the course.)

I acknowledge that it can be annoying to have the time shift forward and back every year (though it's far less annoying than it used to be, with most clocks these days being network-connected and auto-correcting), but there are also advantages. It's actually a way more nuanced discussion than most people realize, who just knee-jerk whine because they lose an hour of sleep every spring.

I also think, like arguing whether or not pineapple is an acceptable pizza topping, people online have made it out to be a way more dramatic thing than it actually is.

Congress passed a unanimous resolution last year to make this the last time we ever change the clocks. So of course, after literal perfect harmony in the Senate, which never happens, it's basically stalling out in the House.

The whole reason Bush's administration pushed to have it shifted from a 6 month/6 month split to an 8-4 one back in the early 2000s was part of a plan to slowly do away with shifting clocks by degrees. It also allowed for research groups to do studies to determine whether or not the ultimate overall effect would be positive or negative, so we can know for sure whether or not it's a good idea.

The ideal scenario would be to NOT jump directly to doing away with the shift, but to potentially go with a 9-3 or even 10-2 shift for a few years to continue examining the impact. But people are impatient and Congress needs bullshit non-issues to cover up their own inadequacy, so arguing over DST is a good distraction. So here we are.

The ironic thing is that they aren't pushing to do away with DST, they're pushing to make it permanent. Which is actually a different thing (and would have a different impact), even if from the point of the view of the average person it's exactly the same thing.

It's mildly annoying but I actually prefer the switch. It makes my winter morning drive to work take place in the light, and my summer mornings not as ridiculously bright (sun would rise at about 3:30am if we didn't have DST in the summer).

Yes and no. Most of the online discourse does roughly boil down to "I lost an hour of sleep my life is literally over," which is obviously silly an exaggerated, but there are significant, real consequences associated with the change, like an increase in accidents of all sorts (some of which are fatal). There are bigger problems, but it's still definitely an issue worth solving.

No. The earlier time is better.

It's literally one hour. 0.01% of one year, let alone the 40-50 that are likely left in your lives. In the grand scheme of things, the amount of time gained or lost is utterly negligible.

VampireCoyote posted...
Time is not affected by human laws

Our interpretation of it, however, consists exclusively of human laws. There's no such thing as absolute time. Every single measurement of time is measured relative to something else, and each and every one of us can and does change that frame of reference multiple times a day. Daylight Savings is just another example of changing that frame of reference.

This is the absolute worst. I'm relatively lucky in that my position within the time zone and the time that I usually get up now mean I don't have to deal with it, but for the couple of years where that wasn't the case, it took me literally weeks to recover from how much that threw off my circadian rhythm.

I don't really understand why people whine about it? Hours shift throughout the seasons whether people or dumb old politicians want it to or not. You can't abolish it anymore then you can abolish time zones, or the transition of night and day.

The hours don't actually change. It was just something they created for wartime use and then forgot to remove it.

Driving in winter conditions in the dark is objectively more dangerous than driving in winter conditions in the light. I have a rural highway commute in the morning. If a deer or coyote is on the road ahead in the dark, I could be in trouble if I have to slam on the brakes on ice.

And I can't just choose to ignore society and show up an hour late for work.

don't drive so fast that you have to slam on the breaks if conditions are bad then. it's like you are a Californian driving in the rain....
