Also man I can't explain the feelings of emotions I went through when I woke up one morning to a PM from scar where he described me finding a note from Whisper explainig that Brennus was kidnapped and that I had to betray Fields and Rosetta or else he'd die. And not to tell anyone else, or he'd die. The next day in RP Varra went a little crazy and started spreading pig's blood on the walls in runes to block magical scrying, afraid that the League had a way of spying on their home. The other PCs knew *something* was going on with Varra as she became more and more unhinged but not what. It was a really fun time for me!

When our heroic team of player characters brought down the sky, one of the Justice Leaguers returned to Z'onn Z'orr was a Justice Society member as well - Doctor Mid-Nite! Surprisingly, though many outside of the comics community don't seem to know my dear boy Pieter, he was actually an extremely prolific star of the first decade of the 2000s. Pieter Cross, a blind man and a doctor, rose to prominence with the JSA, becoming the superhero community's resident surgeon, doctor and mortician. Considered by virtually everyone as Earth's greatest doctor, the return of Mid-Nite to Z'onn Z'orr would have been considered an unqualified success, except for one small stipulation. His Nite-goggles were irreparably damaged into the mass teleportation event that injured many on arrival in Washington from the JL Satellite.

Since that point, Mid-Nite has served as a wise man, a veteran with experience for Spirit. But he also has been tested with an occasionally unbridled rage, the rage of a man who has fought for relevancy for years, overcome his disability, and now finds himself back in his starting place, back in the dark once more. It's just another painful reminder that this crisis can, in an instant, steal everything... but more insidiously, it can leave you with a lingering scar, the sort of phantom limb scenario that has a much more painful psychic toll than physical one. Mid-Nite's emotional trauma doesn't end with his blindness however. As Roz'etta has recently read in Paul Lincoln's first chapter of Legacies, Mid-Nite has been intimately involved in Sue Dibny's murder from the first moments after Ralph Dibny discovered his wife's burned, lifeless body.

Mid-Nite was the one to discover footsteps on Sue's brain. Mid-Nite was the one to make an accusation against the Atom - when, in reality, it was his ex-wife who accidentally killed one of the most beloved fixtures of the community. And Mid-Nite, even in Z'onn Z'orr, still is in custody of Sue's body. In a way, he's been holding onto her, holding a torch for Sue, for months. And as this crisis drags on further and further, a man living in darkness - in more ways than one - must be brought back towards the light if there be any hope of Spirit turning his new mentor back into the hero he's known to be.

Hint: An enemy to some in Z'onn Z'orr -- but a highly valuable asset to others.

I said it earlier, but it's cool that Mid-Nite is becoming the new mentor figure for Spirit, right when Crime Doctor has been brought back as well.

It'll be curious to see where things develop.

I love Mid-Nite. Another thing that Scar didn't mention is that he brought to Spirit's attention that Bane probably has cancer from his venom, something that Spirit trusted Brennus to inform him of. Brennus decided to betray Spirit and leak this, but he doesn't know about that yet.

Also one time Spirit walked in on Mid-Nite trying to practice surgery on a dummy, and it wasn't going so hot. He wound up snapping at Spirit but he doesn't have any hard feelings about it

i need to get to new york to get him his goggles so he can help robotman (not the doom patrol one) who might be finally suffering the effects of aging

Just a point of clarification - this was the original Doctor Mid-Nite, predecessor to Pieter. His name was Charles McNider. On Earth-1, he's been dead for many years, however.

Drunk Earth-2 Mid-Nite was one of my favorite Patchwork moments!

Incomparably malevolent, searching only for power at virtually any cost. Herr Starr once had a greater purpose, but Jesse Custer saw an end to that. God is dead, and now, next in line is Herr Starr.

Encountered in a hidden bunker within the confines of Cairo's free city, Herr Starr commands the Grail, an secret organization once thought entirely destroyed, whose purpose had been to prepare the world for the second coming of Jesus Christ and the new world order that would be to follow. But that path was obliterated when Jesse Custer killed God, Starr and everyone in between. Yet, Starr survived a massacre at the Alamo and began the slow, painstaking process of rebuilding a two-thousand year-old organization. Now, at the end of the world, he has decided to reveal himself once more; this time, he's targeted the daughter of Darkseid, the immensely powerful Grail. With her destruction, Starr believes that he could lead the African resistance, laden down with accolades and glory.

The fascination I have with Herr Starr is his clearly corruptive influence of Freddy Freeman. Due to a series of intricate circumstances, the future Captain Marvel is, for the time being, forced to sit in Herr Starr's office during Checkmate's visits to Egypt. After all, Herr Starr has a clear line to the location of the next deity in Freddy's list. An unknowing bead on a god, but a bead nonetheless. And while that party attempts to carefully tightrope walk an alliance with Starr that allows them to hunt down this god without angering a potentially valuable asset on the frontlines of the global war, Freddy has been playing the part of collateral. But lounging about in Herr Starr's office has the untoward consequence of allowing a man who once kept Jesus' last disciple in his basement to whisper uncomfortable truths in Freddy's ear, and combined with the delicate emotional state Freddy is currently in, thanks to BRENNUS...

Well, it's possible that some small amount of Starr's dark rationale for his even darker practices might be heeded by Freddy. And then who knows what happens?

I get chills thinking about it. From having a hand in the near-realization of Revelations to unintentional freedom fighter for the people of Egypt and Africa at large, Herr Starr may be one of the few actively standing against Darkseid's forces. Herr Starr, a monster; ruthlessly, efficiently evil; and now, perhaps, an advisor to the greatest hope in the Eighth Age of Magic.

Hint: Is this a Society member less trustworthy than Cheshire?

Herr Starr is awesome.

Coming from the angle of knowing who he is in Preacher and how ruthless and evil he can be... and he's just like, yeah, an ally, and an especially important one perhaps? Ohh it grinds in such delicious ways.

Herr Starr is someone I still need to get into as I missed his first session.

My guess for this is... Tala

Brennus told Freddy that Mary is probably equated / a fury

Brennus didn't want to keep something from Freddy.

But also, we don't know for sure what the deal is.

He then used his new spell to make Freddy and Rover throw up.

Brennus got arrested... in Z'onn Z'orr!

No matter how many NPCs (and PCs and GMs...) try to tell me I made the wrong decision with telling Freddy, I stand by it was the right call for Brennus.

Basically Brennus realized that we had a lead on where Mary Marvel was - and it is very likely that she is equated. With her being powerful, most likely a Fury. Detective Chimp helped Brennus discover this and consouled Brennus not to tell Freddy because it would only distract him from what he needs to do, especially since we don't know anything for sure.

But after sitting with that for a bit, Brennus decided that he had to tell Freddy, his reasoning being if someone had a lead on Varra being a Fury in Chicago but didn't tell him, he wouldn't be able to trust them again. He couldn't have Freddy feel that way, so he told Freddy about this.

Freddy has not taken it well and it recently led to him yelling at Brennus for treating him with kid gloves when Brennus checked up on him.

#20 - Tala

Of immediate note, Tala's art seems remarkably incongruous to the rest of the campaign's more obvious comic book fare. That's entirely intentional, as Tala in comics hasn't had relevance since the 1950s, despite her notable appearances in Justice League Unlimited. My take on the character is entirely inspired by her - a lieutenant with aspirations for power, but power that lurks behind the throne. Tale enjoys being visible but detests the responsibilities of leadership. In many ways she's a mewling coward, but with a powerful leader to serve as a buffer, she can present as extremely cocky and arrogant.

The beautiful mistress of the night first came upon the scene in the Cinque, as leader of a facility devoted to bizarre and cruel experimentations designed to test the limits of the Equation for the Society. But Tala also revealed that her efforts were designed to study and understand the Equation as it relates to her true master, Eclipso. Tala is a traitor, an insider within the wide umbrella of the Society, focused on undermining them at every turn. Now, usually, a traitor to the Society is something the party can work with - a questioning young commander like Nite-Wing, for example, or an all-out defector like the Crime Doctor - but Tala's disloyalty only leads to an even more remarkably dismal master. Hell, she even converted a minor but somewhat beloved Campaign 1 returnee, Ballistic, into one of the Eclipsed, right before the party's eyes, just to show that she can.

At the end of a gauntlet that focused on the rescued of innocent children from Tala's clutches, the party likely expected a large final battle - instead, they held back, refused to engage, and in fact played the diplomats. An unexpected move, to be sure, and one that had them dabbling in the knowledge that Tala was so unbothered by their presences that she dared them to take the children and leave - Tala and her ilk, including such luminaries as Blue Devil's own brother, couldn't have been less intimidated by the party. She taunted them, mocked them, and bade them farewell.

That sort of power, that confidence, deflated the party in a big way. Tala just outclassed them without lifting a finger. Sporting just a few tantalizing bits of knowledge for our prison-busting crew, I think this dark sorceress, cold, sexy, cruelly beautiful, set herself up as a strong secondary antagonist for the campaign moving forward. This block of sessions has been about beginning to draw the net tighter - recurring enemies, closer-knit connections between storylines... things are coming together. As they do, a character like Tala will begin to step into the limelight in a big way. I can't wait.

Hint: Roses are red.

Feel good about picking her up, since I'd almost forgotten about her by round 7 in the draft.

Tala is someone I didn't have as high on my draft list but in retrospect, I feel like I should have had her high on it.
