Just wait until you get to the point where you can't even remember the first time you felt old anymore because it was so long ago.

That was about 8 years ago for me.

What kills me now is when I put the local oldies station on the radio and they're playing songs that came out when I was in college.

A friend of mine who used to work in a bank said the first time he felt old was when he was working at the drive up and would have to handle accounts for people born in the 1990s. If he was still there today he'd be dealing with people born in the early-to-mid 2000s.

I also know people who've mentioned that they hate the idea that people born after 9/11 are now potentially old enough to have graduated college.

I realized that a long time ago. I actually knew I wasn't going to be young long, and started to not want to grow up at the age of 12. I dreaded my 18th birthday so much. That was one of the reasons I was suicidal at 17. I was willing to exchange my life to not become an adult.

The comic doesn't really mark the year that you become old, it marks the year that the majority of the US population would be too young to remember a specific event.

Time waits for no man or something. However yeah the job I just got let go from (wasn't feeling it anyway) had all young un's in my training group. Some were fine and all but as some were 16 and immature they messed around. I felt old being there but also happy I'm my age as I'm much more mature than I used to be and certainly have more knowledge. I'd rather think of the plus side of getting nearer to death then not.

what's funny about this to me is that my mom listened to a bunch of classic rock + folk (Beatles, Jim Croce, Kansas, CSNY, etc) while we were in the car with her, and now my kids are listening to Faith No More, Beastie Boys, Ministry, The Police, etc.

Phrased differently, it marks the year in which anyone who remembers those things will be older than the majority of the US population. There's an argument to be made that that qualifies as "old," though I would personally agree with you that it isn't quite the same thing, since "able to remember X" suggests an age quite a bit older than "was alive for X," especially when dealing with relatively complex political issues that children might not be fully aware of (I remember Diana's death, for example, but not Clinton's impeachment, though as a non-American that distorts my perspective a bit).

Here's another indication of age:

When you're younger, everyone seems older. Actors, athletes, musicians, models - almost everyone you see in pop culture is older than you. Eventually, you start to get to a point in life where everyone is around your age (more or less).

And then you hit the point where you wake up one day and suddenly realize that almost everyone you watch in movies or shows or videos (or porn) are all younger than you. And in some cases, way younger than you.

It's like how in Doctor Who, the TARDIS was based on the Police Box because it was something that was all over in England in the 60s, so it made sense as something a time machine might disguise itself as to blend in.

Now if anyone in the UK sees a picture of one, they immediately think of Doctor Who first, and some people don't know as anything other than a TARDIS. Because there's only a few of them still left around in random places.

In the same vein, people today watching movies where Superman changes in a phone booth or Bill and Ted travel through time in one may have no idea what the hell they're looking at, because phone booths don't really exist anymore.
