I love CVX but it's probably the most dated game in the whole series, even more than the PS1 trilogy honestly. Pretty stiff movement, frustrating forced soft-locks in many places, retreading the same areas twice, egregious back-tracking at times, dated DID portrayal, and some pretty cheap, annoying enemies. I think a CVX remake would have nowhere to go but up, and has the potential to become a new classic.

Related to the Wesker x Redfield feud, how do you guys feel about the post RE5 storyline overall? Was the 'fresh start' of 7 the right play? Was RE6 just kind of extraneous and done for the money? Do you think there was a better angle they could've taken, or has Capcom made killing their lead villain work?

The best villain since Wesker died was girl Wesker in Rev2, trying to recapture some of that magic. I think they realized right away that they fucked up, and that because of it they needed to pretty much start over.

7 and 8 were both good, but almost as detached from the overall mythos as you can get. They've pivoted as best they can, but they have absolutely botched the handling of all three of their major villains (Umbrella, Wesker, and Spencer).

The fresh start of 7 was undoubtedly the right play for a larger audience. Villains like the Bakers and Dimitrescu have now become just as iconic as Wesker has. And I think the grounded story of Ethan and his family without 20+ years of baggage attached ended up really resonating with players more despite Ethan's pretty blank personality.

For me personally, I prefer the conspiratorial thriller style storytelling of the earlier titles and I think the series has meandered without a singular unifying threat stringing things along in the shadows. I don't really find the Molded or the lore around it that interesting and the series leans a little too hard in the supernatural direction now. I would've taken the Alex-Natalia thread of Revelations 2 and expanded that super hard. Have a super dark storyline with Alex attempting to plunge the globe into an age of fear, with a deranged cult of followers at her beck and call (ala Heavenly Island). Involve the BSAA, Claire, Leon, Jake & Sherry, and span it over multiple games.

Aaaaaand with that being said, I realize how actually complicated and unrealistic that all is. Hence the smart idea for a reboot! Still I always hope that threads like this aren't completely abandoned.

Right. They wrote themselves into a corner with how grossly complicated and over the top 6 turned out, that they had to drill the series back down to its core with 7 -- A residence of evil.

I too love the grand conspiracy thriller backdrop, and think that that is where the series shines. And where I hope 9 goes to with the BSAA being teased as corrupted (again) now. But with the timejump, I don't know how feasible that is either.

Honestly, I like Ethan a lot. Retcon or not, having him be just some dude who stumbles into trying to save his wife, being forced into murdering his wife, and then immediately dying is fantastic. That is how 97% of us would handle an outbreak event and that's somewhat refreshing. "Ethan" as a concept is novel too, but I don't think they fleshed it out enough. Ethan >> "Ethan" imo imo

Yeah all of this. CV is one of my favs but it absolutely needs a ground up remake (Yes there's CVX and Darkside but you know what I mean), the only reason not to go for it is lack of established fan interest. If only it had been titled RE3 originally!

And uh yeah some of the stuff in that game is very problematic and should imo be fixed by rewriting, them not officially diagnosing Alfred changes nothing there lol.

I feel like everything that was introduced in 6 also was concluded in 6. It was a very standalone game in a way, despite the additions to the cast. It didn't really inform the future of the series unless they really wanted Jake as a new MC

Dommy Mommy and Magneto were good for the like 20 minutes they were in the game. Miranda was more whatever, but none of them could have been a series threat. They were very self-contained. Did like how they wrapped up Miranda in the DLC though.

Alex had (has) the potential to carry some sequels of the wanted her to.

RE2 Boss Fights bottom to top, story and gameplay considerations with full bias go go go

Moth - Stupid, silly, easy but I was sad that it wasn't in RE2Make. It was a reminder that not just people were affected by the outbreak, rando wildlife got caught in the crossfire, which I enjoy.

G-Imago - I really did not need to know how G reproduces, but it was pretty satisfying to see Irons get a comeuppance. Great for the mythos, just okay to play against.

Alligator - Same to say about the moth, but a cooler animal to see mutated that is actually threatening. I say as I also like it for the unique aspect of easily beating it by running away and letting it chomp an explosive.

G5 - Birkin is probably my favorite overall villain in the series from a combined gameplay and story perspective. This toothy vagina amalgamation shows just how far removed from humanity he's gotten through his constant mutations and I actually pity his downfall at this point. The fight itself is nothing, but from a story perspective it is aces.

Mr. X (Super) - Love me a mutated super boss from a story perspective but god damn this boy has ended more no damage runs for me than anything else. And he's the very last thing (basically)!

G4 - Bad doggo. My second biggest run loser. Bikin losing all sense of human form and going four legs is great body horror.

G2 - Birkin's face sloughing off to make room for the G head is my favorite part of the transformation, and makes this form the most terrifying for me from an aesthetic point of view. Solid fight as well.

G3 - Probably the best of the pure gameplay boss fights, Goro Birkin is a terrifying spectacle and just looks like it will end your day. And the close quarters combat ramps up the intensity.

Mr. X (Stalker) - I was not prepared for this dude in my first playthrough. He seemed literally unstoppable and I got my ass handed to me. Then I finally did it! I killed the Tyrant! ...then he showed back up crushing skulls and walls and my face over and over again. Slamming the CCTV camera is one of my favorite moments in the game. Even now he's iconic, and the blueprint for Nemesis. Such a cool design for a 90s game that holds up today.

G1 - Truly iconic. The boss fight itself is nothing special, but everything else around it is amazing and the top of the series. The desperation of Birkin to inject himself when Umbrella comes to betray him, then murder him feeds into the mutation. Then it's this form that wrecks the USS Alpha team, the rats's eye view of which in the Outbreak opening is my favorite cutscene in the whole series. And then, G1, is the catalyst for the infection of Raccoon City as he crushes the vials and the rats carry it out into the city. And after all that, he roams, searching for hosts and encountering our heroes. It's a tragic fall from grace and the start of my favorite degeneration and series of fights in the series. Birkin was a villain done right from top to bottom.

Brad Vickers - I have never felt more satisfaction from killing a digital character. 12 year old me had a grudge against Brad from the original and once I realized who it was shambling in the RPD tunnel, I went out of my way to take him down every run, often to own detriment. Still do to this day!

I'll throw down some of my favorite tracks too when I'm not at work.

I think G1 is excellently designed for the first boss of the game. The whole running and hiding in tight corridors and the fog makes for an excellent stage while not being too difficult because you're not just getting assaulted constantly. I also feel like I go through tons of ammo on him.

Oh I used to blast rust in summer all the time. Made playing mercenaries even more fun too!

You make some damn fine points about those bosses, FFD. Makes me want to place G1 at #1 myself!

Also is there any cutscene that's been replicated more times than Birkin's initial transformation? I feel like whenever it's redone there's always some new interesting take on it - say what you will about ORC but I love the Containment scenario for being able to actually play through the section.

oh no this is strictly OG2. Super X probably slides up a bit, and G3 down a bit. Everything else about the same. Oh Alligator down because it's a glorified QTE there.

This is almost entirely why it places where it does for me. Just a fantastic gem lost in the rest of it. And I agree about the G1 fight proper being a lot better in RE2Make. It really sets the tone for everything that follows.

What do you prefer about it? You know even I admittedly vibe with that creepy, empty aesthetic of original RE1 more than the intense Gothic darkness of REmake's mansion at times. And of course there's the hilarious dialogue.

Ive always thought that the first game can be a bit difficult to explore because the mansion is so big and the Remake made it even bigger. Also Im not a fan of Crimson Heads (the zombies that comes back from the dead).

But I havent touched the remake in like 20 years, I just remember that I couldnt get into it when Gamecube version was released and went back to the original.

Demo was fantastic.

I've "solved" the original games Village section from doing it dozens of times, but I got absolutely blasted in this, died 3 times. I think knowing it like the back of my hand actually made it harder because I was going through the exact same motions I'm used to lol.

Yeah this demo solidified it for me. Not that I had any doubts, buy holy shit it's so good. All the new gameplay implementations fit so perfectly and yeah, it's definitely harder than the OG. Plus it looks amazing on top of it all.

Can't wait for the full release.

I've played through the demo about 5 times so far and I absolutely LOVE it. It feels so damn good to play. Love the atmosphere, it already feels a lot scarier than OG. The expanded lore & areas are great so far. It blew my expectations out of the water and then some.

It's definitely scary, which is actually going to be something I have to get used to. I love RE4 but typically don't like horror games, and RE4 never bothered me because the only scary thing in that original game is the Regenrators. Here, it's scary already in just the village, so I can only imagine what it'll be like as it goes on.

I love the knife parry. The only thing that i can complain about is that save point not working. Runs amazing on my aging PC but i'm still gonna give it a try on the PS4.

I haven't been this excited over a demo since like RE5's way back. Like yeah the past few RE demos have been cool but the fact that there's no timer on this one and it feels so replayable is just exciting to me. The best part of RE4 IS its replayability so I'm already glad to see that captured here. And thinking about it more I think this game might finally crack the puzzle of making action feel like survival horror without compromising on either.
