As (one of the?) preeminent Resident Evil scholars on the board, I am of course super hyped for this month. Currently playing RE8 on the VR2 and it is wild. Can't wait for the RE4M VR patch already but I think they just started development. That being said, ask me anything about the series to keep the hype train going and generally talk about all things Resident Evil until we get bored and this purges.

RE6 is criminally underrated, people gaslit themselves into thinking it was like a sonic game.

The feeling that you're playing a big budget hollywood film is unmatched! I'd probably put it above RE3 remake, still close to the bottom but I was way more disappointed with the latter.

I obviously disagree, but I normally say the same thing about RE5 in arguments so I can at least say I understand the feeling.

I literally dread replaying 6 in a series playthrough. It has my least favorite character in the series, some of my least favorite plot arcs, and is the culmination of what I consider the mishandling of Post-Raccoon RE.

Say three copies of an equally resourceful and clever survivor got injected with Nemesis virus, T-Veronica and TG Virus. Which one wins in a scrap?

Ps: Also, what do the brackets for certain titles in the ranking stand for? Just curious.

RE5 destroyed my investment in the series lore with the yeeting of wesker and spencer so with RE6 I just wanted more fun game. I can't really care about plot arcs anymore. Chris vs. Leon and the Ada stuff is supremely dumb but I can't even get annoyed, at least it felt ambitious and like something is actually happening. Kinda got tired of the RE4/5 plots where you have very few characters and you're just waiting for the end to get some story going.
It's not RE5 but it's close enough with more interesting locations and boss fights! And RE could really use more choose your character storylines with crisscrossing. There's a lot of on paper good stuff that works for me.

Wish they still made it play more like RE5 though. Almost all gameplay changes they made were for the worse.

Oh whoops the bracketed games are those considered major releases but that are non-canon.

Assuming those injected bond with their mutation at peak performance I'd take T-Veronica > TG >> Nemesis.

Alexia is clearly the peak evolution, but Manuela shows just how deadly a "normal" person can be with it. Morpheus shows that Dead Aim was just throwing things at walls, but definitely has some neat applications. Nemmy is a brute, but that's mostly all he is.

I'll give RE6 this. They finally brought back a side character instead of leaving them all in the ether. And she was probably the best character in the game! Shame they had to hamfist something like Jake in there with her though.

Say RE2 gets a rerelease that's like a PSX version of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters (so better graphics, updated music, subtle mechanical changes under the hood and a bad font) and you get to make one change of your choice to improve it. Is there anything you would tweak about it?

OG RE2 is a game I've put easily over 1,000 hours into over like 10 systems at this point (including Game.Com!) so for me it is peak gaming experience. The only doable thing I'd really want would be a built-in randomizer to make completely fresh experiences. Pipe dream style would be a couple modes like REMake with One Tough Zombie and Invisible Mode. Completely out there would be an in-engine Death's Door scenario of Ada escaping Raccoon to go along with 4th Survivor and Tofu.

Oh hell yes. A topic like this was 100% needed.

Got a lot of other games to play currently but I'm VERY slowly going through the RE timeline yet again at least up until RE4's events. Once I'm done with Atomic Heart I'll probably be able to put 100% time into it.

I got a Claire Redfield Tubbz for Christmas and I absolutely adore it. Want to get more for sure.

Hey FFD, have you played any mods? Resident Evil Containment is an awesome one. There's also a Survivor fixed-camera one that's incredible (but not finished yet). Resident Evil REvisited was amazing as well. Damn there's just so much good stuff in that scene right now.

I personally think Resident Evil 6 plays awesomely. The movement abilities, the quick shot, the melee moves, killing enemies in that game is incredibly fun. But then when you add in the bloated plot, wasted characters & vehicle sections that make me want to rip out my eyes and cut off my hands, the game goes downhill MIGHTY fast.

RE side games fucking slap with their OSTs. Outbreak opening theme for example is S-tier. Dead Aim is amazing. Garden for a Gameboy game goes hard.

lol I was literally going to mention Bawk as an excellent source for mods XD Had no idea you watched him too (but not entirely surprised either)

The RE2 randomizer is absolutely insane right now. Hilarious with endless possibilities.

I remember realising that Hunnigan was the only post-2 character who ever came back for a second appearance. I might have missed a couple but that was such a weird thing for the series to insist on, until Ethan of course. Will we ever see Sheva again? Helena? Billy? ...Jake? Probably not.

Hunnigan has 4 total canon appearances counting Degeneration and Damnation too. I'm surprised she wasn't in Infinite Darkness to be honest.

Okay yeah I guess Hunnigan does technically count but she's basically an extension of Leon. But with the movies she's by default the most prolific post-Raccoon side character.

Alex showing up in another game does give me hope for this, yes. Don't let me down Capcom.

RE4R is looking good, but there's one thing I'm most curious out (which I'll spoiler tag in case people are going in completely blind and haven't watched any trailers)

I'm both simultaneously excited and concerned at the expanded role Luis seems to be getting. Obviously given the username I've had for...almost 18 years now (yikes) I've got some investment in this character. He gets bumped off by Saddler a little early in the original game, but he's a memorable character for the bits he's there for. The fact he's seen alive in the latest trailer in parts of the game he's already dead by in 4 gives me hope they're doing him more justice this go-around (assuming it's not a fake-out), but I'm worried they're taking his character in a more goofy sidekick direction, which I would just find so disappointing. I wouldn't mind the odd bit of excessive wisecracking and visual slapstick if it gives him a lot more screentime and importance to the plot, but here's hoping he's ultimately still the same competent, cool and collected cop with one liners!

I have never played a RE game because I hate horror movies.

On a scale phycological PG-13 horror to slasher movie how uncomfortable would I be playing one of these

RE4 Luis:
I personally love what I've seen with Luis so far, but then I personally think he was a rather underbaked character to begin with. I actually hope they show more of his scientific side as he's meant to be a biology researcher.

I'd say the earlier games are on the lesser side of R. Lots of blood and gore. Decent bit of body horror. Graphics at this stage might not be that scary anymore to a newcomer.

RE4-RE6 era are pretty PG-13. Still a good focus on body horror but things just seem more cartoony despite the higher fidelity.

RE7-now are pretty intense for a newcomer in my opinion. Super gory, in-your-face grindhouse style villains (loud & psychotic personalities), everything is super crisp and disgustingly detailed.

I'd agree that the Raccoon/Umbrella (0-CV) and the post-Umbrella/Global (4-6) are more of a conspiracy thriller wrapped in a horror shell, with some sprinkles of (both intentional and not intentional) comedy. A lot of body horror and jump scares (used correctly) but mostly built on tension.

7 and 8 just go fucking hard out of the gate and are just so much more visceral. The first 20 minutes of 7 alone are terrifying.

If you don't do straight horror I'd say avoid the Winter era, but you could still enjoy everything up to that.

I keep wanting to get into this series, but Im not sure the gameplay will ever be for me unfortunately. One side of RE2 is the most Ive played and I hated when a certain stalker showed up that messed with my own naturally slow pacing of going through games.

I hear thats a common element in the series too. Otherwise I watched ReMake 1 because I couldnt stand either control option. It sucks because the games definitely look cool, but I dont think I can get over my own issues to play more of the series.

Am I the only one on board 8 who prefers the original over the REmake?

What do you prefer about it? You know even I admittedly vibe with that creepy, empty aesthetic of original RE1 more than the intense Gothic darkness of REmake's mansion at times. And of course there's the hilarious dialogue.

I love both, but to me REMake is the perfect standard for what a remake should be. It loses nothing from the original, makes improvements across the board, and the additions all enhance the experience.

The recent Dead Space remake is incredibly solid in these regards too.

I can't say I outright prefer the original, but I think it stands up as its own experience. What the remake "loses" from the original is just the extra cheese factor. It's got its own but there's something even more special about the original version. It's got an "off" vibe to some of its areas too.

Also I liked all the branching "paths" of cutscenes you can take. Remake is more linear iirc at least when it comes to story progression.

Shadows of Rose was pretty great! Don't know what it does for the series as a whole since it confirms the timejump, but it was definitely worth it and brings my score for RE8 up as a whole. Don't blink.

Been playing RE8 VR, which rules

Looks like Claire & Leon are going to be in the next Fortnite season. I am excited!

Death Island is going to take place in 2015, putting it between RE6 (and Vendetta) and RE7.

So I'm a little ashamed to admit I haven't played RE7 or 8 yet.

I have the option to play with my buddy's VR headset or regular. What's better for a first time run? I doubt I'd be the type to get dizzy or sick from VR, I always play with my 3DS slider at max.

I mean I would always choose regular personally. VR's cool but always feels like a bonus side mode to me. And I also argue playing in VR sort of requires a decent understanding of the world already.

Though I've only played RE7's VR mode as I don't have a PSVR2 yet, and Village's VR mode seems way more fleshed out than 7's.

Remaking 5 feels weird, because due to the games theyve remade Chris and Wesker have been downplayed a lot. Id LOVE to see a CV remake

ReRemake. I doubt theyll ever touch CV or 0. Theyve been remaking the already popular ones.

I agree they'll probably REremake 1 again. Maybe first-person remake or something totally different.

But I have a feeling they'll cool it with the remakes for awhile after RE4 anyway.

Yeah I guess you can't really do a 5 remake without at least 1 or CV as the lead up.

The fact that they straight skipped CV doesn't inspire hope, but I absolutely feel like you HAVE to rebuild the Wesker X Redfield bloodfeud in order to retell 5 properly.

Plus CV would just be amazing to see redone as well, as you can see I already hold it in high regard. It would give them a chance to recontextualize a lot of the characters. For all of RE3Make's faults, it does have my favorite portrayal of Jill in the series. I'm holding my breath to see how they handle Wesker in 4.

CV is one of my favourite games in the series. I feel a remake might ruin it a bit.
