So long as easy student loans are still a thing, we'll just be right back here all over again in another decade or two.

why would he double it? he got all the credit for announcing it right before midterms, and then come 2024, he has his free "dont vote republicans because they cancelled your student loan forgiveness" card to play

his admin has no reason to press this further if/when the supreme court voids it.

That would mean Biden doing anything more than a half-measure, so there's not a snowball's chance in hell of that happening.

OK? There's no need to be a reform there. That's a dumb argument against canceling student loans. They should do both.

Reform is already being made toward affordable higher education, by this administration. The solution is not "block access to higher education by restricting loans" but "make higher education affordable without loans". You keep repeating this point and it is harmful. The primary way to successfully drive social mobility is through access to education. By restricting access you are effectively kneecapping any semblence of social mobility in the US. You are fucking over poor people.

The president has never had power to cancel debt with an executive order, and that's not a power we should give him. A year before he signed that order his own party was saying that power rested exclusively with congress. It's shitty that he gave all these people false hope, but it was never going to happen and he had to have known it which is why he timed it to happen right before midterms.

Like COVxy says, you need to address the affordability of university. That's the problem, not that the president was blocked from arbitrarily forgiving a random amount of debt from a small subset of student loan borrowers, once.

Cut off the loans gravy train, and tuition collapses immediately.

So Im out of the loop what is the argument for letting this be allowed? Is this case similar to the CDC canceling evictions. Where GOP argued that CDC has nothing to do with peoples rent so Supreme Court ended it. Or do Dems have a shot of winning?

Biden officials have argued a federal law known as the Heroes Act of 2003 authorises the administration to forgive student loans in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The law was enacted after the 11 September attacks and allows for loan cancellation for people who have suffered economic hardship because of a national emergency.

DOE controls Direct Loans, and can basically do whatever the hell it wants.

Which makes him look like a bitch for not opening with 20k since it'd be so easy to double

Not to mention, the fact that he made it look so easy and clear to launch, yet waited until conveniently right before midterms to announce it, proves it's nothing but political. Let's not pretend this was ever about the people to begin with.
