Just finished all the chapters 1s! Partitio's was far and away my favorite, holy crap I fell in love right away.

Overall loving the game but I will say it bothers me kind of a lot that there are two characters that offer instant buffs/debuffs in a fight at night but zero equivalents during the day. The day/night thing seemed super cool at first but because of this I feel like I'm just purposely hamstringing myself if I ever travel during the day (especially since Temenos is my MC), which sucks since the daytime areas are really pretty.

How's the music? All my characters are in the level 20-30 range, doing some chapter 2s and 3s, and I've played the whole thing with sound off while binging Vanderpump Rules.

Super happy to have the duplicate path actions. Obviously some are situationally better than others, but it seems like you have to revisit towns often enough to get the opportunity to get new stuff with a different party.

I started with Ochette and am generally happy with it so far? She's not the most interesting character, but some of her party banter things are cute. And she's so good at breaking stuff... She's just Provoke and Latent Power, no jobs needed.

Finished the eight paths. Final ranking (of the paths, not the characters):

Castti > Ochette > Agnea > Partitio > Temenos > Throne > Osvald > Hikari

For the ones I didn't mention earlier:

Hikari felt the most generic of the paths. Like a typical fantasy story, you could say. The presentation was solid, and the final chapter was still good, but there wasn't anything too exceptional about it. I also thought the flashbacks were kinda poorly handled. Not bad, just not excellent like the other chapters all are.

Temenos trying to solve the various crimes was a lot of fun. Always liked when he went into his detective mode. The main weakness was probably that the true villain is a little too obvious? i mean, it still worked even with the lack of surprise, just felt like it should've been more of a twist.

It's great how different Partitio's was from the others. I feel like I particularly enjoyed the more "episodic" chapters in this game, though the story-based ones could be great too. Partitio's indomitable spirit makes every situation better.

Every Ochette chapter was extremely strong. There's a good intro, finding the three beasts is awesome and tells a compelling story, and the finale is epic as heck.

One final note: I absolutely love whenever you use the path actions in a story scene. Partitio and Castti did this particularly well. Castti creating the elixir in battle ruled, and Partitio got to do it twice (buying the rights for 80B and hiring Roque. The ones where it's just a fight aren't as fun, but it's still cool. Mixing game mechanics and story is one of the best things a game can do.

Just started with this. In the first game, I picked Ophelia as my main, since I figured you can't go wrong with healers. I used the same logic for this one, except with Castti instead. I think I used Alfyn the least in the first game, so figured I'd change it up and take that class first. I tend to avoid jobs that require consumable items, due to hoarding tendencies so maybe picking one will help me get over that?

So far, not so much. Finished her first chapter and won every fight without using her mix skill, except the one time I could get it for free. Maybe that'll change later...

Mixing is incredibly good, and you can use it for free whenever her latent power is fully charged. Best combo is BP+Strengthen+Diffuse, I think. And you can use multiples of one ingredient so just pile on the BP and your party will be able to do a lot. Party-wide healing is a bit hard to come by, so she's useful for that as well.

Well, Ive discovered how to get the offensive mix skills. Dunno if they explained that I had to push right or I just missed it. That should be fun to play with. The defensive ones may get better with more party members.

Regarding fast travel, I didnt know this existed until near the end of the first game. I tried to route the chapters to minimize back and forth walking. This time I plan to use fast travel a lot though.

Finally got a full party (Castti, Ochette, Throne, and Temenos). The equivalents of those first 3 were the last characters I recruited in the original (I accidentally went in OCTOPATH order there), so that's a nice mixup. Probably going to tackle some chapter 2s now before recruiting the others.

Initial thoughts are it's nice to see some of the chapter 1s are less formulaic. IIRC in the 1st game, it was pretty much you did the town first, then did a dungeon and there was a boss at the end of that dungeon. It was nice to have a little less predictability. Seems like this carries into the overall structure with additional chapters too.

Amusingly, I think this is the first game I've played that uses the title, "inquisitor," in a non-negative context.

Yeah, I was pretty suspicious of Temenos for a while due to that title, haha.

And the game is way less formulaic than the first. I mean, it might still be formulaic to some extent, but it doesn't make you FEEL like it is, as the first game did. And there are definitely chapters that change things up.

So, my plan to go straight to a chapter 2 next had some wrinkles in it. The next chapter 2 area I was planning to go to is in the same town as a new character. If I recruit a character but don't do their chapter 1 right away, and I do the chapter 1 later, am I locked out of whatever leaves/items that character gets from their chapter 1?

Thanks, I was able to do the chapter 2 before activating chapter 1.

The first chapter 2 I did had no fights in it...was not expecting that but I guess that explains why the required level was only 7.

Recruited Partitio next. At the beginning, when he was about to buy the "dubious silver ore", I wanted to shout out him not to since he would get cheated. Though I guess, in this context "dubious" simply means low quality and not fake. Though there was plenty of other cheating going on later in his chapter 1.

Got distracted by other games, so haven't gotten very far.

Been playing some more. Mostly just been doing some chapters that were in the initial towns before recruiting anyone else. I passed by Agness town since I didnt feel like doing more chapter 1s. Its been nice playing with a full party. Also found an optional dungeon that was around my level. I havent yet made it to true chapter 2 towns yet.

it still feels weird that you can just casually steal from and fight townspeople, and this is basically expected.

You can also use your imagination and pretend that they had a little argument, or that Temenos had a sassy reaction to it, or whatever.

Part of the reason I like these games so much is that they inspire my imagination in ways that video games haven't since the Ps1 era.

On the topic of stealing, did they change the mechanics in this game to try to reduce save scumming? I tried to steal a 65% item after stealing a 100% item and failed twice in a row. So, I then reset about 3-4 times and had the same result each time. I finally changed it to attempt the 65% steal before the 100% steal and it worked the first try then.

FWIW, I'm not save scumming that much, largely because it's just not worth the time to do so. There's a lot of 80% steal items that I'm just leaving for now, but if there's a good item with a high chance, and I fail several times in a row, then I'd rather just cut my losses at that point.

No, save scumming works as well as ever. I've tried to steal a 3% rate item five times, reloaded, and gotten it on my first try a couple times. Same with higher percentage ones.

Also you only have to pay a fee to repair your reputation if you screw it up :p.

I made a little progress. Recruited Agnea, so now I guess I have a "legitimate" way of getting free items from NPCs. Also, in her starting town, there's a Beastling in a hidden room that's super powered for this stage of the game and the allure chance was around 60%. The Beastling one-shot some enemies with that bow attack in a level 15 or so area. Probably not going to be alluring a replacement for awhile. I don't want to summon the Beastling that often though since I'll need to go back to allure again.

Also did her chapter 2 since it was in a chapter 1 town, and her chapter 3 has a pretty low level requirement so I may do that soon. Still haven't been to any chapter 2 towns yet, but that's what I'm planning on next.

The worst thing I can say about Throne's final boss (and Temenos's) is that I basically one-shotted them and missed the coolest parts of the fights.

I enjoyed Throne's chapter 4 for how outright creepy it is; I also thought it was a subversive twist to the "femme fatale revenge story". Chapter 3 is basically Kill Bill. Chapter 4 is something new. Totally get the complaints though, because it does feel a bit out there.

Making slow progress on my end. Made it through Castti's chapter 2. Her interaction with Edmund was pretty funny. Also along the way also did one of Ochette's chapter 2's, and also Hikari's chapter 1. I have some interest in the chess world, so I want to call him "Hikaru" in my head.

Anyway, regarding Hikari, his story seemed kind of cliche at the start but I will say I did not expect the townspeople to get (presumably) slaughtered like that. I was tempted to save money by not bribing anyone so I could do it for free with Castti, but glad I didn't do that. Also kind of cool that his "starting town" is also his chapter 4 town - I talked to him before exploring at all so I didn't expect that.

Also found the guilds - I was wondering when I would get access to the main classes as subclasses. I gave Apothecary to Agnea and Warrior to Castti. I don't really think Warrior complements Castti that well, so I think I'll look for something better later - just wanted to give her some extra weapon types. Partitio seems like he could make better use out of Warrior skills. Hopefully whatever subclass rotation I decide doesn't end up being exactly the same as what I did for the original Octopath, whatever that was. Also, found Inventor, which I gave to Temenos so he had more weapon types for investigations.

I have all the characters and am halfway through at least getting to chapter 2 towns now. I'm feeling kinda overleveled for some of these chapters. I think most of the leveling is coming from exploring between towns. I usually try to be thorough to make sure I got all the treasure, which means back and forth and extra battles. Even in low level areas, the XP really adds up. I'm trying to run away from battles more, at least in easy areas. Though if a Cait appears, I just can't help myself...

Perhaps things will catch up anyway, later. I think what I did in the original was to try to do chapters that were roughly around my average level, rather than just doing the lowest first. Perhaps I need to do more of that now. Still not really even using Castti's mix skill that much, since a lot of times I can win without it, but perhaps that'll change.

I do remember the original having a very tough final end game, which I didn't even beat (since I didn't feel like doing all that stuff without saving in order to have just one attempt at the true final boss).
