We're a little over a month away from the closure of the Wii U and 3DS eShops. Feel free to use this topic to post game suggestions and other important reminders. I'll start with a few of the latter:

-All game patches must be downloaded by then. This is especially important as a few major titles received updates as recently as last year when a major security flaw was discovered that allowed people to hack your system just by playing those games while online.

-Free apps/games must be downloaded for the first time by then (if you've already downloaded them before and deleted them, they count as software that you've previously downloaded and thus can still be redownloaded in the future). This means that if you STILL haven't downloaded Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter, you must do so in the next month or else you will be forever locked out of transferring Pokemon from Gen I-V to Gen VI and beyond (unless Nintendo releases an alternative, which seems unlikely).

Ugh I guess that means I need to finally decide which Fire Emblem DLC to buy

Wait are patches not able to be downloaded either? I thought it was just the shop that was shutting down.

Another reminder is FE Fates paths must be downloaded by the end of February - a month before everything else.

also a reminder it's extremely easy to hack a 3DS and now that the shop is closing it is also Good to do so

I remember someone saying you have to beat Phoenix Wright vs. Professor Layton to get the downloadable content for it, any other games like that?

Holy shit what? Um, guess I better get the fuck on that...

With Switch offering GB games, the rush to download them is lessened, but if you want to own them, this would be the time to download them. Especially something like the 3D Kirby's Adventure, which I'm not sure the Switch will offer.

Ace Attorney games, SteamWorld Dig, Zero Escape and SMT IV (and SMT IV Apocalypse) are all titles worth picking up as they're either digital only or a pain to find physical copies of.

I also thought patches could still be downloaded after the shop shuts down. If not, a good way to find them (also for games you might later buy physical copies of) is to search for Update in the eShop store.

Finally

Still trying to decide if I want Harvest Moon 64 on WiiU. It's possible that the Switch might add it eventually though.

me now learning that Brain Age is no longer required to homebrew your Wii U, thank god that's no longer a concern then

I mean I already did the Brain Age method but for others you don't have to worry about it anymore, Wii U is now hackable without the need of a particular game, just a browser exploit

The US already didn't get the SNES one on NSO due to legal issues so I wouldn't count on it.

Okay, I had heard a couple of reports that patches were going the way of the dodo, but I did some research upon seeing this post and it turns out Nintendo themselves confirmed that existing patches can still be downloaded.

Did some research on this one too and, take this with a grain of salt, but what I'm reading is that this is downloaded by connecting directly to Level 5's server and not the eShop, so it shouldn't be affected.

And yeah, I'm going to guess based on the current state of the franchise that Harvest Moon 64 will NOT be coming to Switch Online in the US.

My tip would be, while you can certainly make some educated guesses as to what might be remade/reissued on Switch and other systems, if you REALLY want something badly, you might be better off not assuming it'll come.

Also remember that eventually someday Switch Online will be shut down and Nintendo clearly leans toward the earlier side of things in terms of shutting down their online stores and services (though it could very well be that when this happens, they will make those libraries a free permanent download for users who subscribed long enough, there's no guarantee of that).

I'd significantly doubt NSO games turn permanent, the absolute best case scenario is if the next system starts off with the same library the Switch has... but even that I'm doubtful when we've been resetting the available libraries since the Wii service shut down leaving the Wii U VC without the Wii VC games

at least we got NES Classic & SNES Classics permanent (and moddable for greatness)

Currently trying to get a living Pokedex (and some valuable ones) migrated from Bank to HOME in case anything funny happens.

Will have to check all my games for updates. Thanks for that reminder. May also need to figure out what DLC to acquire...

I remember them making a statement last year about PokeBank not being effected by the eShop closures, at least not yet

yeah they also change to make it free (lmao I forgot it was paid actually)

although as noted there is still the catch they you need to least have PokeBank downloaded already or else you can't get it off the eShop anymore

Oh this is good to know. Playing Engage now and it makes me miss some of Fates' mechanics (I liked pair up and how it handled classes/learning skills). Think I might actually go back and buy Revelations.

I also still need to download Pokemon Bank.

As someone who did that because of the eShop closing, I highly recommend that you don't.

But I spent hours working on a notepad file trying to perfectly marry/best friend every Hoshidan to a Nohrian in a way that would have no class overlap for them or their children, and I never got to use it. :(

While PokeBank will be free, PokeTransfer (for Gen I-III?) is tied to Bank and will need to also be purchased once to still have access to it later!

Poke Transfer is for transferring from Gen V (and consequently III and IV) and VC I and II to Bank. You can't download it on its own - you need an active (paid) subscription to Bank to download it if you haven't already. And neither will be downloadable for first-time customers once the shop closes, free or not.

Of course things that actually rely on Nintendo servers such as Pokebank and online multiplayer functions will only exist as long as Nintendo chooses.

I've never understood the hostility about people not wanting to hack systems/pirate games and purchase them legally. Like if you want to do it, you have your reasons, but to get like that towards people who just want to do it legally is baffling to me.

Absolutely no chance of N64 online expansion happening with the Natsume/Marvelous issue. Only chance is if they remake 64 like they've had with Friends of Mineral Town/A Wonderful Life

There's nothing wrong with buying games legally, but this isn't your last chance to play them, and I believe any obligation to the companies involved vanishes when they indefinitely stop providing a way to purchase them. I hate to think that if some of these games aren't bought before the deadline they become lost forever to those unwilling to step outside official channels.

I understand the reasons. What I'm bemused by is that every time this comes up, there's at the very least biting sarcasm towards people who want to make every effort to not have to pirate.

I have nothing in HOME and want to feel safe... plus this is a good reminder in case they make an abrupt announcement that PokeBank will be shut down in a couple days or w/e. Might as well take care of that now while it's on my mind.

I suppose it's because of how strongly some people, myself included, feel about delisting. They don't respect the idea that you have to just abandon things that aren't sold, so they're dismissive of rushing to go along it.

Yo-Kai Watch 3 is the only 3DS game that I'm interested in atm, and maybe buying it legally would help support the series. idk how this stuff works.

Looks like there is a retail version- Holy moly, $270 on Amazon. I guess the eShop isn't a bad choice.

Yo-Kai Watch 3 had pretty much one print run where you were basically required to have pre-ordered to get a copy. Yo-Kai Watch Blasters is even more expensive from what I remember

People have a fear of being unable to access everything. I bet some of the same people fussing also have game backlogs with 50+ or even 100+ bought games.

Not saying delisting is a good thing, but if the backlog topics I see here sometimes are any indication, I doubt there will be a shortage of gaming for you.

It's not about not having enough games, it's about treating games as worthy of respect and preservation.

Probably not likely that Nintendo will do a big eshop sale right before the shop closes right? I have a few things in my wishlist that I've been holding off on purchasing for now just in case.

Highly unlikely. They pretty much have you by the balls--either you buy them now or risk never having legal access to them.

I don't think either of them require specific games at this point. These are exploits that were utilized at one point to get through the security and run unsigned code. Nintendo would patch them and they would have to be replaced by other methods, but eventually the system was no longer updated and so the current exploits work for everything.

Hacking a 3DS at this point is as easy as putting a file on the SD card and running it.
It's stupidly easy.

it used to, Brain Age

but last year there's been new devlopments and it's no longer usable with the Tiramisu method

I can't say much about it though since my Wii U is already modded via Brain Age, but maybe I do my JP Wii U with Tiramisu now

I've got a real sense of FOMO here. I've got the games that I think I want (Harvest Moon, Story of Seasons, Rune Factory), but I'm not sure if I'm missing anything I'll want in the future.

Yeah, I'm dreading the inevitable FOMO, just like a did with Wii.

I'm hoping by the time FOMO hits I'll finally learn how to mod my 3ds which I hear is surprisingly easy to do
