jennifer aniston's nipples

So much poking through. They decided to make Rachel's boobs the star of the show early on in The One with the Boobies when Chandler walks in on her after she gets out of the shower. The other day, my wife and I were watching the episode where Rachel walks around the apartment naked (which was shortly after Jennifer Aniston got breast implants in real life), and we were both kinda surprised at how much side boob they showed from behind. We were also both wondering how they shot that scene in front of a live audience.

People still arguing to this day if they were on a break

It's one of the most hotly debated things from the show. To me, it's pretty obvious they were on a break, so that's not really the issue. For me, it's more about if Rachel is justified in rejecting Ross after sleeping with the girl from the copy place and going out of his way to try to hide it from her. I'd say she was, so in a sense, they're both right. I don't think Rachel should be obligated to take Ross back just because they were technically broken up at the time.

The logo

It's a solid, instantly recognizable logo. It's pretty flexible, too, because I see lots of stuff that uses the same format, and I can immediately tell it's from Friends. Not the best logo ever, but it's memorable and that's all you can ask for.

Central Perk

First off, it's a decent pun for a coffee shop located in New York City. A bit too obvious, but it works. Second of all, how do the friends always manage to get the couch? Nobody ever wants to sit there (except for the guys who bully Ross and Chandler in that one episode, I guess)? I get we don't see every time they go there, but still, we rarely see them sit somewhere else. Also, I originally assumed this was a coffee shop nearby, but I've heard people say it's actually located on the ground floor of the main apartment building, which blew my mind. I didn't realize that was a thing in high rise apartment buildings.

Red Ross.

This is an odd designation that shows up once and never gets mentioned again. That being said, The One with the Rugby is a good episode. It was the rare episode where Ross got to be cool and tough, at least for him. His relationship with Emily was a good excuse to get him to do stuff he'd never otherwise do because new love has a strange way of getting you out of your comfort zone in order to impress them.

Snake5555555555 posted...
Paul Stevens

He is a neat guy, and he's just a love machine. Thinking about his role in Friends kinda makes me sad that Bruce Willis can't act anymore because he was really good on the show. I did think it was strange they never had him interact with Chandler considering the success of The Whole Nine Yards was the entire reason he was on the show, but his disdain for Ross and Ross's inability to win him over until he got blackmail material was good. I loved it when Rachel and Elizabeth kept trying to talk up Ross to Paul, and it always ended up backfiring somehow. I don't think the relationship with Rachel really worked, but they had to end his run on the show somehow, I guess.

Robbie Williams and Billy Crystal's improvised cameo

It's really cool how this cameo came to be. It wasn't even planned for them to be in the show. They just happened to be working on an adjacent set, and they agreed to be on the show. Since it was a rather impromptu situation, they had to adlib their entire conversation. As someone who grew up loving Whose Line Is It Anyway, I've always been impressed by the skill it takes to do something like this. Comedy just seemed to come naturally to the both of them. But even after all these years, it's still kinda hard to see Robin Williams in anything and not be sad that he's gone. He might be the hardest any celebrity death has ever hit me.

Ugly naked guy

This is kind of an odd running joke through the first half of the show, when you think about it. You have the friends peeping on a dude in another apartment who likes to walk around naked, making jokes about stuff that would be awkward to see someone else doing naked ("Ugly naked guy got gravity boots" is the one that immediately comes to mind for me). This comes to a head when they have to fashion the long poking device when they think he might be dead, which is only one of two direct interactions they have with him. The other is when Ross is trying to get his apartment and gets naked with him to get ahead of the other applicants (it sounds...well, just as weird in context), and of course, the rest of the gang happens to catch the sight. Honestly, the gag couldn't have ended any better than that.

This joke
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uN6i_-ELLw&t=1s

Considering Ross is now living in what used to be ugly naked guy's apartment, it makes sense that he'd expect the others to watch him through their window. Ross is nothing if not a showman, and the commitment to the bit to pretend even to watch TV is phenomenal. It's a great use of misdirection to make it seem like he's just watching TV and then show he's still acting.

the storyline where joey fell in love with rachel

I'm not saying nobody liked this storyline, but I haven't met anybody who thought this was a good long-term decision (although maybe somebody in this topic will prove me wrong!). I was mostly fine with it at first when it was just an unrequited crush, but once they turned it into a love triangle with Joey, Ross, and Rachel, it became drama just for the sake of drama. Everybody knew it wasn't going to work out between Joey and Rachel, and the writers didn't even seem to know how to end it when the time came.

ChaosTonyV4 posted...
The Chick and the Duck

The chick and the duck were fun, harmless additions to the show, unlike Marcel. They could include them in silly moments, and they never took over the show. They were also the motivation for the Roommates Game, which is the best thing the show ever did, so they were a worthwhile addition for that alone. And then suddenly, they weren't part of the show anymore and rarely get mentioned again except just to imply that they both died at some point. Friends could be weird about dropping characters from the show without ever drawing attention to it, but they do at least start a new cycle at the end with Chandler gifting a new chick and duck to Joey.

The Christmas Trifle

It was a Thanksgiving trifle, I believe. Regardless, it was a great gag that even named a trope on TV Tropes (It Tastes Like Feet, which was Ross's assessment of the trifle). I want to judge Rachel for never suspecting something might have gone wrong at some point, but I'm not exactly a good cook myself. Joey turning out to love the trifle was an excellent twist though. "What's not to like? Jam, good. Custard, good. Meat, GOOD!"

Chandler/Rachel chemistry/plot lines e.g. Rachel setting up Chandler with boss, cheesecake

This is honestly the most underrated and underutilized pairing in the show. Every single Chandler/Rachel storyline is good. I think it largely works because there's no romantic tension between the two (other than that flashback episode where they didn't know each other at the time, and that scene lasted for like 10 seconds anyway), so they get to be "just friends." Plus, their senses of humor complement each other well, so they take jabs at each other, but it never results in serious anger or hurt feelings. To me, the most memorable Chandler/Rachel interaction is when she handcuffs him to the filing cabinet and he yanks out the drawer and hits himself in the head (which wasn't supposed to happen, both actors' reactions to it are genuine).

seven seven seven

This is probably Monica's best comedic bit. I've often wondered what the seven erogenous zones are supposed to be. I even Googled it once, and I couldn't find any conclusive answer. I thought about taking notes and following her recommended order, but alas! The look on Chandler's face when she finishes is priceless. It also worked out for Monica in the long run because then they get together and Chandler becomes the best sex she's ever had.

hank azaria

Hank Azaria's run on the show is interesting. He shows up sporadically throughout the series as Phoebe's love interest, and even though he's awkward and nerdy, it kinda works. He's different from the guys she usually tends to date, and her feelings for him seem genuine, to boot. It just feels like it's destined not to work, which makes it bittersweet in a way. Then it becomes kinda weird when they bring him back to be a romantic rival for Mike, especially since David ultimately gets shot down when he tries to propose to her, so when they could have actually finally been together, Phoebe has already found somebody else. Tough break, David.

Jack Geller

He might be the best of the minor recurring characters, and he's definitely the best of the parents. He's never not funny, and he seems like he's genuinely trying to be a good dad, even if he has strange ways of showing it. He plays well off of everybody. I don't know if I have any particular scene of his that I like above the rest. I just know I'm going to laugh every time he appears on screen.

There was a weird tonal issue there where Mike goes to Barbados to stop David proposing and Monica is literally cheering in the background while a likeable character who's been around off and on since s1 gets unceremoniously dumped from the show

Mike's cool as well, but they botched that whole triangle imo

That time where Ross struggled to remember all 50 states

This is a classic "Ross isn't as smart as he thinks he is" moment for the show. Actually, my family and I tried the "name all the states in 6 minutes" game after seeing this episode, and even as someone who can say with confidence that they do, in fact, know all 50 states, the pressure of the time limit does make it tough to make sure you got them all, especially if you're just listing states at random as they come to mind and not in any discernible order. As an added challenge, we also did "name all 50 state capitals." Yes, I am a nerd, but why else would I be here if I weren't?

Chandler's dramatic weight loss from the last episode of season 6 to the first episode of season 7 considering both episodes were set the same night

No one's appearance changed more from season to season than Chandler's. It'd almost be funny if it weren't the result of Matthew Perry's addictions, so I get why none of the characters ever draw attention to it. It was kind of tough watching him in the Friends reunion because it doesn't seem like he's aged well (although he said his speech problems were the result of some dental work he had done shortly before it was taped or something like that). This is a particularly jarring example though because, as you said, the first episode of season 7 is the direct aftermath of the season 6 finale.

This was a great self-contained gag. If I've watched this episode recently, I'll probably find myself imitating the "fingers to temple" gesture Ross does every time he says "Unagi." I did it right now, and perhaps you did, too, as you recalled it...! I've never had unagi before, but I'm not a big sushi guy. The best part of this episode might actually be the end where Ross asks the self-defense coach how to escape from his moves so he can attack his ex-wife, and Ross plays it completely straight despite the guy clearly thinking he's unhinged.

the forever Friends vs Seinfeld debate

I get why these two are often compared since they're the two biggest sitcoms of the '90s, but I don't feel like they're all that similar other than both being sitcoms. The appeal of the two shows is different. Seinfeld popularized the "It's funny because all the main characters are terrible people" subgenre of sitcom, and there's very little drama or heartwarming moments. Friends is more of a feel-good type of sitcom, where you root for the characters and you find satisfaction in their triumphs and their growth over the course of the show. I love both shows, but I'd side with Friends overall. It's a show I always find myself coming back to, for one reason or another.

Janice Litman-Goralnik (ne Hosenstein)

I love that Chandler knows Janice's full name, by the way. I do think he cares about her in his own way, which is why it was always so difficult for him to do something that would hurt her feelings. Nobody in Friends could chew the scenery quite like Maggie Wheeler, and you could tell she relished it in her appearances as the show went along. The moment you saw her on screen, you knew she was going to say the three words that make Chandler's balls suck up right into his body. I think my favorite exchange is in her last appearance and she's looking at buying the house next door to the one Chandler and Monica are buying. She says, "What a small world," and Chandler's top notch reply is, "And yet I never run into Beyonce."

Bamboozled

I loved game shows growing up. I rarely watch them anymore (other than the occasional Family Feud or just watching funny bad answer videos on YouTube), so I thought it was cool to have an episode where Joey is auditioning to be a game show host. The brief glimpses they give you into the game make it seem like total chaos, but clearly, there's a rhyme and reason for everything that happens because Joey can rattle off the objectives of the game like it's nothing on the final callback. I love that Chandler thought the game was so stupid at the beginning, and at the end, he just screams, "BEST. GAME. EVER." (Not to be confused with the GameFAQs game contests of the same name)

Actually, my favorite part of this bit isn't even on this video. After this, Chandler tells Rachel, "She's not just the boss in your office, if you know what I mean," and Joey laughs. Rachel glares at him and he replies, "Oh, I knew what he meant." I do enjoy how it throws Chandler for a loop every time Joey imitates the sound of the bed creaking though.

I recently learned Mr. Heckles was only in five episodes, and that kinda blew my mind because it felt like a lot more than that. I think he's definitely one of the more memorable minor characters in Friends. He's just the right amount of eccentric to make him weird but not so weird that he crosses over into creeper territory. I think The One Where Heckles Dies is one of the best episodes of the first couple seasons because they manage to take this guy who has only been annoying and weird up to this point and make him sympathetic. We'll try to keep it down.

Ross's inability to tan correctly

David Schwimmer became really good at physical comedy over the course of the show, and this is a fantastic example of it. Ross repeatedly screwing up the spray tan process is done so well, as he keeps finding new ways to keep getting sprayed down the front and never the back, whether it's because he counted wrong ("Mississippi-less-ly?!") or because he went to another spray tan salon that did it differently than the first one. Ross and Chandler have a great exchange afterwards, too. "I went to that place your wife suggested." "Was that place...the sun?"

primitive rom chips

I'll be honest: I had to look this one up because I didn't recognize it just from this. I do remember the days of making funny initials when you got a high score in the arcade. I have naturally cool initials though (JAM), so I tended to use them most of the time. Also, to bring it back to Seinfeld, it's too bad that Frogger machine didn't have a primitive rom chip in it or something...!

Joey (TV series)

I tried getting into it but never really could (which I imagine was the case for most people, since it was a short-lived spinoff). I don't remember how many episodes I actually watched, but it couldn't have been more than a handful. I recall thinking at the time that I didn't think Joey could carry a show by himself. Does anyone actually have positive memories of this show? I never really hear it discussed, so maybe it's more fondly remembered than I realize.

The episode title naming scheme "The One Where..."

This was a brilliant idea back in the days before you had box sets and streaming when people didn't actually know episode titles. They tried to think of what the fans would wind up calling the episodes naturally, and the percentage of times they got it right was pretty high, I think. They didn't have much foresight with some of them, like "The One with Two Parts," "The One After the Super Bowl," or "The 100th Episode." A few of them didn't get the part everyone remembers it for though, most notably (in my opinion) "The One with the Embryos," which is more known for the Roommates Game than the embryos.

Joey proposing to Rachel

Of the entire Joey/Rachel romance arc, this is probably the one moment from it I'd say was good. Friends always knew how to do cliffhanger season finales. This isn't the best one, but it was definitely a heck of a way to cap off the season. I mean, as always, you knew nothing would come of Joey/Rachel because Ross/Rachel was inevitable, but it was a good twist.

My next one: Ross calling Emily Rachel at the altar

Now this is the best Friends season finale cliffhanger. For a show that almost never delves into "shock value," it was a truly stunning moment. You never really knew where the Ross/Emily relationship was going to go or how it would inevitably end (see above), but I don't think I'd have ever predicted this. I actually liked Emily as a character, so it's kind of a shame her run on the show didn't last long beyond this (partly because her actress got pregnant in real life). Probably the craziest part of it all is that the writers stumbled upon it by total chance because David Schwimmer accidentally said "Rachel" during a take.

The Rachel hairstyle.

I honestly didn't realize this hairstyle became a thing until years after the show. Rachel's hair changed a lot over the course of the show (way more than anyone else's), but the original hairstyle is probably still the one I associate with her the most. There's a lot of talk about "iconic" stuff on the board at the moment, and I'd say this is an iconic hairstyle (now someone needs to make a "most recent iconic video game hairstyle" topic so people can argue Cloud's hair isn't iconic).

Paleontology

"Jurassic Park could happen!" I'm guessing someone on the show was into dinosaurs because paleontology comes up a lot, possibly more than anyone else's profession (maybe Joey gives him a run). They try to balance it out by having all the other characters get bored by it every time Ross brings it up, so it never really takes over an episode.

Nominate Chandler and Joey's bromance

Still a top tier bromance for me. I enjoyed the running gag early on of the show treating roommate moments like a marriage, such as when they're going to buy a table together and they ask things like, "Are we ready for this yet?" It's kinda wild to think they were only roommates for half the show, but it's how I always think of them. I like how Joey was the biggest Chandler/Monica supporter, and even when they get ready to move away, they make sure to have a room where Joey can stay with them and they can grow old together.

_PandaMaster_ posted...
Hopefully it's eligible even though TC has it as part of his ranking levels:

Joey's ever-popular pickup line. "Hey. How You Doin'?"

Can you really call yourself a fan of the show if you haven't tried to say this line at least once? Not necessarily as a pick-up line, but just as an impression to try to nail the cadence. It might be the most famous line from the show (other than maybe "We were on a break"). My favorite use of the line is when Phoebe questions whether the line actually works, prompting Joey to use it on her, and even knowing it's coming, she still melts.

Joey wearing all of Chandler's clothes while going commando

"Look at me. I'm Chandler. Could I be wearing any more clothes?" The One Where No One is Ready is probably a top ten episode of the show for me, and this moment is a big reason why. It's such a fantastic and unexpected culmination of the fight Joey and Chandler have been having the entire episode. It's the type of payback only Joey could come up with.

Wait, I'll nominate the build-up and pay-off to Joey finding out about Chandler and Monica.

This has been a Joey-heavy update! But this might be the most clever Joey has ever been. Watching him slowly piece it together over the course of the episode, and the realization on Chandler and Monica's faces when they notice he's figured it out is so great. Joey keeping their relationship a secret even when it did damage to his own reputation at times was the greatest test of his loyalty, and he passed with flying colors.
