Nah. Lost interest in that long ago. Didn't like how the edit treats the audience like kindergartners.

Only know about the one unhinged comment that went viral. Oh, and the Medevac.

Someone on Reddit pointed out that everyone on Survivor 43 had an average of at least two confessionals per episode, and that only two other seasons have achieved this - Borneo and Thailand. I'm amazed that people like Jed and Erin had that many...

This season of Aus survivor seems like its going to end up a fairly boring premerge, but if we get a merge with Shaun, Hayley, George, Shonee, and Jordie its going to be a bloodbath of a postmerge.

Editing not as bad as a normal Aus survivor season but still heavily lopsided. I think Ive narrowed my biggest frustration to the way the editors show alliances. They only show one or two peoples perspectives despite there being a broader alliance. So for example we get tons of George and Shonee but zero Liz.

Yeah, there have been NUMEROUS times in Survivor AU that we only get one or two perspectives on an alliance again and again and again. They decide on the main characters and shove everyone else to the side. It makes for a really frustrating watch if you're like me, and it's worsened by the blatant confessional splicing and redundancies. They also don't allocate their additional airtime very effectively, hardly giving us any "camp life" scenes.

I read that unfortunately Rogue got voted out with a whimper in episode 4 (she asked to be), instead of getting an epic eight-episode villain arc. I really liked hearing that someone with a face that punchable was on the show, because we don't get that much, but it bums me out that she didn't get an amazing blindside comeuppance.

FWIW it's pretty much a Survivor/BB esque show and mafia hybrid.

For whatever reason, I just don't like Savage Crew on Tough As Nails this season. They're just too dominant in comparison to how skill they come across, and it makes it feel like they're purely brute forcing their wins.

This is crazy. Twelve players this season, and all twelve have finished bottom two in an individual competition in the first six episodes. Not a single player has lost a competition twice.

Oh right, I keep forgetting that's on. I haven't watched it yet.

I'll probably watch it but I just hope there are some actual characters this season. 34/36 contestants from seasons 1-3 were clearly cast to be competitors first, TV characters second (Michelle and Freight Train being the exceptions) and even though some characters have emerged from the crowd, it's led to seasons 2 and 3 being pretty boring.

rogue was self aware enough to recognize at tribal that everyone actually hated her but that was partially because she said out loud that most of the tribe wasnt actually heroes and shouldnt be there and then everyone reacted.

there is speculation that there was a big argument between Paige and rogue about Paige being a big game hunter that wasnt aired also

there are no further spoilers in my reply, just context for why it happened

^That looks fake to me, because he posted that over two days before it aired. Feels like nothing but empty hype for the casuals.

OR maybe it's about last Sunday's episode, with Rogue getting voted out, in which case it's definitely overstated.

What are some of the truly jaw-dropping moments in Survivor history? Here are some that come to mind for me.

Michael Skupin falling into the fire
The Rupert blindside (to a person watching Pearl Islands for the first time today it may seem like a standard blindside but this season aired when Survivor was still a huge cultural phenomenon and literally 100% of America was rooting for him to win; we were just as stunned as he was)
Sue Hawk speaking out in All-Stars
Dreamz reneging on his deal with Yau-Man
David proposing to Carolina at the reunion (I STILL cringe whenever I hear either of their names)
The Brandon Hantz meltdown
The aftermath of the episode 4 reward challenge in Kaoh Rong
Varner outing Zeke
Take your pick from the Dan situation

Darkx, you forgot "I wanna give individual immunity to Natalie" (before the show beat it to death, we were all flabbergasted by why he'd do that)
Natalie White beating The Hantz shocked a lot of people because of that season's terrible editing
Heroes vs. Villains. In general.
Woo taking Tony over Chaos Kass
The two-way Tribal in Lame Changers
JacketGate

There are more, though some of them are just angering, not jaw-dropping, because of production stupidity (think Fiji Era twists).

I'll give you that Game Changers tribal (which I considered listing but figured it was far overshadowed by what I included from the same season... also what went down is practically standard now but it was the first of its kind) and Erik's giving away immunity (which legit slipped my mind, probably because, as you said, the show has beaten it to death over the past 15 years) but the rest of those are nowhere near the things I listed.

Man I really wanted to keep going but I was VERY busy in December and January and at the point in the list where I was mostly apathetic to everyone. I considered resuming it this month but I may as well just post my full list. I'll do it later tonight, but I'll tell you now that it's amazing just how similar and also how different our lists are. I'll just go ahead and say though, Taylor is my #1, and it was never in question and it was never close. Never have I ever loved and rooted for a contestant on any show so much from the very beginning and only loved and rooted for them more and more as the season went on and have never been happier to see someone win.

Maryanne and Taylor winning together (honestly, alongside Kim & Penn, Lia, and Danny for Challenge USA because fuck Sarah getting a bigger monetary win despite finishing in a DISTANT second place)...2022's seasons on this list were just so much stronger than the 2021 half. Ultimately, I think what gave Maryanne the edge for me was that, in addition to being unexpected and much needed (how many nerdy guy superfans had to win before we FINALLY got a nerdy superfan woman to win), I just appreciated her as an individual character. Taylor was a genuinely nice person, but I feel like a lot of my enjoyment of her was more due to her underdog status in the season, rather than her personality as an individual. That made the difference between first and second place on the list for me.

We've continued to get good winners this season too. Derek & Claire were good winners, and while I have my issues with Gabler he was at least unique and his edit was a very non-traditional winner's edit, especially for a man, and it was unexpected and interesting

On a show that has become extremely soulless and unwilling to portray people as villains (either because they don't want players getting attacked on social media by lunatics, or because what used to be "villainous" behavior--like blindsiding and betraying allies--is now the sort of thing the show always portrays as super intelligent and good gameplay), having a bratty character like Sydney (or Tori) is great and fun.

i don't disagree because i'm a tori stan but i don't put sydney in the same category

anyways unrelated, i think that my favorite part of this season of aus survivor is the music they use that gives it like a horror movie vibe when things are tense

it's so good

Tori, more like Bori(ng)

jk, Tori was all right

Sydney is a Goddess though, such a great character cut down far too early... I've forgotten so much about 41 already but can't forget her!!

Yeah it could be because Tori was playing from the bottom for so much of the game whereas Sydney was dominant until she was twistfucked

but Sydney was also hilarious in her delivery, like terrific comic timing and natural camera presence, and I don't recall the same vibes from Tori.

Sydney truly was... the threat of threats. They hate her cuz they ain't her!

Except that according to post-game interviews, had Luvu lost a pre-merge immunity challenge, she would have been the boot, and the Erika outsider story was shown out of context.

But it was still extremely fun to watch her THINK she's God's gift to the world!

Not only that, I've heard that she was supposed to be in Naseer's spot in the challenge they threw, but she couldn't bring herself to throw so they subbed Naseer in (who didn't know the plan). Lucky that they did that, because Naseer singlehandedly won that challenge and saved Sydney (unbeknownst to her).

completely shattered by the deceptive edit, here I always dreamed of a world where Erika was eliminated pre-merge instead of winning and Sydney getting the depth run instead.

Well, Sydney's still my fav from that season regardless...!

(also extremely rare that my Survivor tastes come anywhere close to aligning with Inviso and darkx too.... I still have the heart of a normie casual)

I DID watch episode 7 of AUS Survivor. HOLY SHIT that was entertaining! Think Dan's Funeral levels of multi-layered yet "good TV" strategy. Just brilliant.

I can't decide if you're saying this as if it's a "holy shit" kind of good or an "it manages to out-awful itself continuously" kind of bad.

Yeah, I don't see the comparison between Sydney and Tori at all. Sydney is the physical embodiment of vanity, but is fully aware of that. Tori feels like a small town girl next door who was the most popular kid in school against her wishes, and thus struggled in an environment where she didn't get that acceptance. Tori would NEVER dismiss other people with "they hate me 'cuz they ain't me" except for MAYBE the racist piece of shit on her tribe. Both were fantastic characters nonetheless and I anticipate that if there's a returnee season in a couple years that we'll be seeing one or both of them again.

Though good luck topping Sydney's profile picture. Easily one of the greatest ever.

Its weird, because I SHOULDNT be enjoying this season as much as I am. The team I hate just won their fifth challenge, securing the team win before the final team challenge, completely lowering the stakes of the finale. Plus the boot order has been AWFUL, with all six women eliminated in only seven rounds. NO woman beat a man in elimination, despite five of the six facing one. Yet somehow, I still find it compelling, especially compared to how little of a shit I gave about season three (and how much I HATED season 2).

Reading the list, I think you're too harsh on Mike for his idol play. Carolyn and Sierra also voted Tyler, so Mike's vote was meaningless. All voting Tyler there did was make Mike look like he was in the loop as opposed to throwing a useless vote on Dan or something.

It was losing Tyler in general that annoyed me, rather than just Mike voting for him.

Overall, I would say TAN4 was a solid season of the show. It's weird, because I feel like I SHOULD hate it more than I do, but I just felt so invested in the story all season long.

  1. TAN4 might just be the best season of the show they've done so far. I think having the prizes for winning individual competition added a much-needed element to the show that was missing. Suddenly, those wins actually MEANT something. Plus, I think the male cast is relatively solid (aside from Jake, who at least gave me someone to root against), and the way the team competitions played out made from interesting storytelling beyond the typical "We're all hard workers and we're proud to represent our professional" style that the show usually gives us. Beth's slow downward spiral into rage was great.
  2. TAN3 is extremely forgettable overall. I think that's what stands out here, is that there's no one I really HATED to keep me invested in the season. I will say that this season has, perhaps, the strongest female cast character-wise, that the show has produced. Plus, I'd say this season has the best winner of the franchise thus far: not an overdog, but still interesting.
  3. TAN1 is a weird season to discuss, because it has some REALLY bad aspects (namely Danny being shoved down our throats all season, and Young surviving far too long in the team competition, despite being incompetent), but it also has some really good aspects (Michelle last as long as she did, and scoring two eliminations of guys is a great underdog story, plus Murph winning out over Danny.)
  4. TAN2 is easily the worst, because the people who do well are about as negative and obnoxious as the show's edit is going to make someone. Seriously, that final 4, where I'm forced to root for generic underdog hero (who doesn't really have much personality outside of being strong on the losing team) Zeus, is dire.

I'm currently at the final 6 of TAN4 and my ranking of who's left in the individual competition is Ilima > Jorge > Ellery > Mister > Larron > Jake, and the gap between each of them is pretty significant.

Okay, finished with Season 4. I think my ranking is 1 > 4 > 3 > 2. I mostly agree with your assessments but honestly having Danny in season 1 is like having Justin in TAR27. An obnoxiously cocky know-it-all to root against because you just know they they're going to get second. I mean it, from episode 1 I was totally sure Danny would get 2nd and the way he got overtaken by Murph in the final stretch of the final challenge was a fantastic ending.

4 was definitely the closest and most exciting season from start-to-finish. The cast was not as dislikable as the season 2 cast, and not as apathy-inducing as the season 3 cast, but not as memorable as the season 1 cast. Renee was a bit of a dud for someone who was clearly cast to be a "character" in the same vein as Michelle and Freight Train. I do think the fact that it came down to the four young men at the end highlights the fundamental issue with the show (further highlighted by the fact that across four seasons, only 2 out of 12 finalists are female) which is that the challenges are mostly tailored to the skillsets of young, fit men. And it's like, you can't be mad at them for excelling at something they're good at, and I don't really know how they could fix it and stay in the spirit of the show other than casting bodybuilder women. And yet, season 3 not only had a female winner but an older female winner at that so it CAN be done, it just isn't happening with any sort of regularity.

3 is mostly kind of forgettable but has a good "main" story with some good sub-plots, a likeable final five with a couple of likable early boots and nobody to hate, and just kind of a more pleasant feel to it than the other three.

2 is dreadful. Too many people who are either obnoxious assholes, gigantic hypocrites, or just downright mean-spirited, and most of the aforementioned went far into the individual competition. As you stated, the fact that Zeus is the easiest to root for in the final four says a LOT. Also had two medivacs and an ejection so it was just a disaster production-wise too.
