That was a really good first episode.

Didn't expect them to drop a short movie length first episode, but yeah I was very pleased.

Reminded me that I used to actually really like this franchise back when it was just that first game!

My normie parents in their late 50s stayed up specifically to watch the premiere, so I have a feeling this is gonna be really popular.

Im not sold on Ellies actress. Not a lot of emotion happening on her face.

But loved the start otherwise.

Not worth watching unless it has the authentic experience of Joel hiding from clickers while Ellie runs around like a crackhead plowing into them while they ignore her.

They filmed this show primarily in my city, and I watched the first episode mostly to see if I could recognize anything. I couldn't for the most part, so they did a good job with set-dressing and post-production. I actually watched them film one scene right outside the building I work at. It was when Sarah rode the city bus after school. That bus circled the block for like an hour, and they had a bunch of extras outside doing the same actions every time it passed. In the actual episode, for that part of the scene (from inside the bus when Sarah was leaning against the window) the camera was so focused on Sarah that you could only barely see blurry buildings outside lol. Those poor extras wasted a day for nothing. This anecdote is probably quaint to people who live somewhere where lots of filming happens, but this show was a pretty big deal in Calgary.

Anyway, the episode itself was fine.

Guess the entire raid on Robert's compound wasn't worth showing

Pretty good, about what I expected - a near 1:1 copy of the game with some creative flourishes here and there. My favorite stuff was definitely the pre-apocalypse expansion. Tess seems a little too passive here for my liking though.

I enjoyed it and I'm really looking forward to the rest of it.

Enough changes from the game to keep it interesting but also enough stuff from the game to just kinda be hyped about.

How many eps are out?

They managed to make the opening section as harrowing as it was in the game.

Also liked the John Hannah bit at the start

I was distracted and overtired when i watched it last night and I feel like that impacted my reaction to it (which was meh). I think I will rewatch it again.

Eh, they got paid. Considering the fact that extras typically get $100-200 I'd say that was worth the hour spent doing the same thing every few minutes for an hour.

After rewatching it with a clearer head, I must say it was a very promising premier. Very enjoyable. I feel like replaying the video game now lol. And then maybe playing last of us part 2 finally.

After watching I'd say... almost. I'm for diversity in casting, but this is not an instance where it worked. I remember the first time I experienced TLoU and I didn't realize the girl at the start (Sarah) wasn't going to be the girl throughout the story. So when that happened in the game, I was gutted. I know few people are going into this show as blind as I went into the game's story, but they really, really shouldn't have made that change. Even my friend who hadn't played the game realized that Sarah wasn't going to be the main character because of her skin color.

That aside, if this first episode represents what we can expect going forward (haven't seen ep 2, waiting for friend to be ready) I have hope for this series.

How does get skin color tell you she CAN'T be the main character while also claiming intentional diversity is to blame?

Given the cover of the game when it released, I felt like it was pretty clear that Sarah and Ellie were different people. Maybe that was just me..

I didn't exactly stare at the cover. I actually didn't pay much attention to the previews or anything either. I had a general idea of what the main girl was supposed to look like and so yeah, really didn't realize they were two different characters at first.

Interracial relationships don't exist? You never met his wife/her mom. Seems like a dumb complaint.

I really didn't think two people would be this purposely dumb, but okay, I guess I'll bite. In the previews for both the game and the show the main girl is obviously not biracial. Even if you weren't paying close attention (like me) you'd still see that difference and think "oh, this girl is going to die, isn't she?"

There, I explained what should easily go without explaining.

I watched the first episode with my wife and her sister. They had never played or seen the game. They have seen the trailers for the show.

They were gutted and did not see it coming, for what it's worth.

Well, I'm glad it didn't ruin it for everyone. like I said, the friend I was watching with realized it almost immediately.

Dont get me wrong. I know exactly what you mean and saying here but Sarahs death isnt gut wrenching because she died(even if you saw it from a million miles away) its how she died and how that changes Joel moving forward.

Just a caveat. Obviously your child dying in your arms is gut wrenching in almost any scenario that lead up to the death. I'm saying that just because that you, or other people(me included when I first played the game) saw her death coming doesn't hinder or hurt the story telling in anyway.

Also episode 2 was fantastic, liked it more than the first. And I'm interested in seeing what they do with Bill episode 3. I appreciate they are filling in the gaps that would be normally just be traversing area to area in the game with just more in depth information about the outbreak and characters. Tess kind of did get short changed here though.

I am playing Last of Us over again, first time since 2017, and I've been playing it in line with the tv show, though just a bit ahead. It is amazing two episodes in how close they are to the game.

I'm trying to enjoy this show but the fact that he had a black daughter in the first episode really ruined it for me

I feel like this theory was basically confirmed by Episode 2 where it was explained that the infection started in a flour factory, but these are the cool little hints about the outbreak that completely went over my head:

I'm still wondering why they opened the series with an MGS4 style talk show segment (I'm only halfway through first ep)

episode 3 is incredible and I have no shame in admitting i cried multiple times

I think had they played it straight from the game and just had Bill/Joel/Ellie making their way through the town it would have felt a bit repetitive and similar to the last one. Kind of thing that works in a game but less well in TV. A slight shame to miss out on the Ellie/Bill barbs though.

As a straight person who has always struggled to connect with gay relationships in television and movies, this episode really turned a corner for me. Just a very well written and portrayed story of someone finding love, acceptance, and purpose. Did not expect it to impact me the way it did. This show is something special for sure, and it's only 3 episodes in.

The last major releases before the outbreak would have been Vice City, KOTOR, and THPS4

I wonder if FEDRA lets the kids play VC to raise their tolerance for violence <_<

The outbreak prevented Big Rigs from releasing.

Damn, I wasn't sure how I felt about having a full episode on just Bill and Frank, especially since I had some concerns about pacing already.

But that was a wonderful episode. It cuts out some gameplay sections that we didn't really need to see again, provides a great backstory to Bill and Frank, and progresses the main plot. Amazing.
