BOGO at Publix is better than any other deal I've seen, at least on par with Costco prices without the hassle. Their sub quality has plummeted recently, though. Their upper management is also full of crazy Christian capitalists fueled by nepotism. Still, other chains seem worse.

Its a very nice open light store. I feel like most other supermarkets go for a dark more depressing theme. Plus they have great products including their fresh-made sandwiches

Harris Teeter's B2G3 beats it. Their sub quality is about the same though, since HT also uses Boar's Head

I go on occasion but usually shop at Lidl, Aldi or Food Lion. Recently went to a small grocery chain called Compare Foods and will definitely be going back there more often. Their produce was amazing --- leans Latin American but had tons of stuff and it was cheap. Saw they have goat meat on special this week.. I've never seen goat for sale before so I'm definitely going to try it out. Had a lot of different sections based on different countries, too.

I wouldnt know, we dont have most of the big chains in St. Louis. Two local chains control a large portion of the market here.

I would imagine most people here have never seen a Publix since they are mostly in Florida, Georgia, and a few dozen locations in some other deep south states.

I think they are good but some of their prices are ridiculous. Like last week I went there and a 12 pack of Dr. Pepper was $8. I will say that their fried chicken and their sub sandwiches are good.

Also, even though their prices are usually a little higher, they always have BOGO deals that rotate every week. To be a smart shopper these days you really have to get all the sales papers or download the apps. Sometimes I make a Publix trip, a Kroger trip, and an Aldi's trip all in one week to get different things.

You can kind of see why though. They have more staff in the store. Every cashier usually has a bagger (Unlike Kroger where they encourage you to bag your own groceries while the cashier scans them). They keep enough bag boys on hand so that they can always help you load your car. Not a big deal for most, but the elderly and Moms with 3 or 4 kids love it.

Safeway is the absolute worst. Everything is expensive and both the people working and shopping always seem exceptionally dumb

It's actually not THAT high. I actually did the math on this and recorded prices in every place I shopped for groceries. It's pretty hard to do in practice because you think stores sell the same thing, but they don't. You wouldn't believe how many different sizes of Bounty paper towels there are. Not just the number of rolls, but the square feet per roll. Almost every store is different and I'm sure that's by design. They don't want you to be able to compare prices.

From the stores I recorded (Publixs, Food Lion, Lowes Food, Dollar General, Ingles, CVS, and Target) only CVS was just outrageously more expensive. All the other stores you have to group into tiers because it's impossible to determine who's actually the most expensive. Publixs, Lowes, and Ingles fall into a mid-high tier. Ingles is actually more expensive in a lot of areas and Publix still manages to beat them on selection. Like Publix stocks Jelly Babies and Jammy Dodgers and I don't know of any other American grocery chain that does that. Food Lion and Dollar General fall into the mid-low tier. That's the cheapest of the "regular" stores. You can go cheaper if your willing to bulk shop at like Costcos or take your chances finding what you want at the bargin grocery stores like Aldis.

Publix always been the go-to, worth paying a little extra for the atmosphere and other stuff.

Until this past year or so that is. Everything in the store has tripled in price and they've moved to self checkouts. It's far more expensive than the Whole Foods down the street, which is just pure insanity. I'm not paying like $7.99 for an Amy's bean burrito. It's 3 bucks flat at Target.
