It is simple. Just post each time you beat a game throughout the year and the platform you played it on. Do not hesitate to add some discussion in regards to the games you or others beat.

At the bottom of this post is a link to a Google word doc that you are free to edit to immortalize your gaming accomplishments. Feel free to tinker with your color, font, and/or bulletpoint/numbering options, but do know that users are supposed to be in alphabetical order.

Doom Eternal (PS5)

Absolutely incredible. I never thought they'd top Doom 2016, but Eternal is better in every conceivable way, and the PS5 load times enabled me to battle through Ultra-violence difficulty without ever having to sit around. Best shooter I've ever played.

Mega Man Battle & Fighters (Neo Geo Pocket Color/Switch)

First game (s) of the year. I used Mega Man in both games.
This little package is neat. These are 8-Bit versions of the two Mega Man Arcade games - Mega Man: The Power Battle and Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters.
I like the effort that was put into the 8-Bit sprites and animations that mirrors the Arcade versions.

Sly 2: Band of Thieves (Vita)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/80298073

Considering PSNProfiles says this game took me four years, five months to finally complete a fifteen hour game, it's no surprise that I was not a fan of the game. I much rather would have the more compact levels from Sly 1 instead of the open world hubs that Sly 2 had. Also, while Sly and Murray were always enjoyable to play as, I hated practically every time I had to play as Bentley except for the episode seven boss fight. However, I do like the story and characters, which were as enjoyable as they were in the first game.

At this point though, I know I own both Sly 3 and Thieves in Time but I don't know if I ever will play either game after how long this one took. At the very least, I've finally freed up more space on my Vita that can be used for other games.

Cheap one-man game on Steam. Nothing I'd go out of my way to recommend, but it's an hour long and cost 49 cents. Considering that, it's not bad.

Played via Fightcade.
My friend wanted to run this game back with me and I went along with it just to get it out of the way.
Still pretty bad back then and still bad now (I low key had fun in some parts during our run, sorta). This game is also the catalyst of "microtransactions".

Replayed via the Sega Genesis Mini 2.

I could of easily played REV00 with all the fun copyrighted characters if I wanted to via other ways but I opt to play on my Genesis Mini 2 instead for convenience.

Got the good ending. Still a great game to playthrough except for that one pixel perfect jump you have to do at the dock level. Using the Fushin Ninjitsu helps at least.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero (PC)

Starting the year off with a bang in what is definitely my favorite of the... Is there an accepted term in the Trails fandom for the first games in each of the individual arcs? Calling them prologue or setup games or something like that feels harsh considering how expansive they still are, especially in Zero's case with how much happens. Whatever. The point is that between Sky FC, CS1, and Zero, this one is definitely my favorite.

Having the game set exclusively in and around one city gives it a very different feel than those others that I think I largely prefer. Crossbell is an interesting setting, providing a nice natural environment for the rookies of the SSS to get their feet wet in the seedy city underbelly and political corruption issues before everything goes wild at the end. Everything else is pretty standard Trails goodness - likeable characters, great writing, fantastic OST, lots of interconnected teases for later on. I know a lot of fans call Azure one of the best games in the series if not the very peak, so I'm very much looking forward to getting to that one... Probably this summer.

Dogworld (Steam)

Not sure how I feel about this one. It's billed as a Metroidvania but it's very very linear without much reason to backtrack or explore, and not even many upgrades other than new guns (no way to upgrade health, for instance). But as you keep playing the gameplay gets more exciting - there are some tricky platforming sections that especially deserve praise - and even the silly dog apocalypse setting starts to get some engaging lore.

Unfortunately you then get to the end of the game and realize that this game fucking hates you, the player, specifically. The final boss is an incredible jump in difficulty, comparable to playing Super Metroid but instead of the normal final boss you have to beat Nightmare King Grimm. There's a point of no return before the final area, so you can't go back and upgrade your weapons. If you're like me you unlocked the secret weapons before going through this point of no return, only to find out that they're possibly worse than the weapons you had to destroy to make them. And then when you beat the final boss, finally, you discover that you're stuck with the bad ending because of something you didn't do 4-5 hours ago, in a game that is about 6 hours long with 2 of those hours being trying to kill the final boss.

Dogworld is almost certainly meant to be replayed but yeesh, I think I'll just play a game that respects my time instead.

My goal this year is to actually beat some games. Main issue is most games I have are gigantic (and FF XIV), so I'm gonna try and balance my time better. Speaking of...

Untitled Goose Game (steam)

I started this a few months back, got to the third area, then drifted to other games. Had some time tonight, and ended up beating it. The reverse at the end was a fun little twist.

I think that's the first game I've fully beaten since.........Sekiro, about a year ago. Soooo much FF XIV, bits here and there of Elden Ring (I really need to sit and actually beat it, but EXPLORING!), and random bits of other games sporadically.

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe (Steam)

I posted my thoughts in the Stanley Parable topic but I'm just putting this here for completion's sake.

Tomomi (Steam)

Okay so this game fucks. Definitely exceeded my expectations. It's a metroidvania that plays super fast and the combat is simple but good. I wish there was less anime nonsense because the rest of the story is just gay and cute but oh well. Don't let the main character's design turn you off, every other character is better designed. It is pretty short though, I beat the whole thing in one (admittedly long) sitting, final time ~2h45m.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars (PS4)

It feels like this game just came out, and somehow it's already the third game in its series. Yoko Taro is a madman.

Anyway, if you're looking for a card battle game or a Yoko Taro epic story, this is not the game for you. However, if you're looking for a good turn-based RPG with some darker story beats, this definitely fits that description! It's a nice short title, clocking it at about fifteen hours to finish the story and an extra few to cleanup the bonus boss and a few miscellaneous trophies. Battle system and exploration is fun (except for the one place you have limited movement, I explored every tile in the game), and I enjoyed the story as it unfolded. The only thing I didn't like is how many tries it took me to get the skill from the suspicious doctor trophy, as he appeared three times during my main run and two times during NG+ before I finally got the skill from him. If you do decide to play it, make sure to turn on high speed mode in the options, as the base speed of the game is painfully slow at times (and you have to turn it on every time you start the game, as it doesn't save this option.)

Syberia 3 (PC)

If you told me that I was a playing a game about a girl who's been saddled with a responsibility and a calling beyond her station, as she braves challenges set before her in a post-apocalyptic but anachronistic steampunk setting...no matter how cliche that premise is, I'm going to get into it. Unfortunately, this premise has the misfortune of being called Syberia 3---as in, it is a sequel to an already established terrible plot. Not only does it have nothing to do with the first 2 games (only having a few callbacks) but it serves to make the canon even worse. My god, just let Kate Walker die already I could give two shits about her (yeah I'm aware there's a 4th game. Don't worry, that day will come.) I'm not gonna bore you guys with how stupid Kate's arc is but needless to say its been 3 games now and she has never had a significant arc. It seems to me that Sokal god bless his soul didn't really want to tell her story as much as just tell the story of a journey and pepper it with eye candy in an attempt to give it substance.

This isn't the worst point-click adventure I've played. But it's pretty bad. I mean, technically, it's not really a point-click adventure as it only scrapes the most barebones definition of the genre. Its somewhere in the middle and resembles crappy First-Time-3d Adventure Games of the 2000s. The problem is this game came out in 2017 well a decade over. Not to mention, its suppose to follow-up a decade's worth of cliffhanger but failed to satisfy so not even the fans could get into this. I often think about Dreamfall Chronicles who's episodic cap to a trilogy redeemed itself after its 2000's 2nd game of shit. Syberia 3 would be like a failed example of that.

As I mentioned in last year's topic, morbid curiosity got the best of me and I decided to play a godforsaken sequel to one of the worst adventure games I've ever played. Syberia 1 and 2 is a very polarizing series of games. You either have someone who will put it up there with The Longest Journey, and then you have the rest of us who think that it's just a bunch of backtracking, with useless screens, and "non-puzzles", mainly dialogging and watching steampunk things move around. Well if you're a fan of the latter, the great news is despite now being in 3d the third game has these exact qualities: Backtracking, pointless screens (now peppered with bland 3d modeled setpieces), an unintuitive UI, a stupid inventory system, terrible unskippable dialog, and blank puzzles. I guess you can say that this really IS a Syberia game.

And you know honestly in the 5% of the time I played this, in the times where I take a deep breath and surface from the mediocre muck....I can feel a semblance of a good game. I can see well written dialog. I can see ambitious setpieces. Camera angles that wouldn't be out of place in a 3rd person game like Resident Evil or Silent Hill (I'm not kidding, you just have to believe me here). But all that is wasted on a flimsy premise, with stupid forgettable characters, and a lore that butchers itself. Like, they could only find 2 voice-actors with distinct russian accents, and everyone else just sounds American. It's like Secret Files all over again.

I hope I'm clear on this---nobody should play Syberia 3. It's really bad. If you had any doubts that a 3d touchup could salvage the series, rest assured I've busted this myth.

Milk outside a bag of milk outside a bag of milk (Steam)

Way higher production values than Milk Inside (to which this is a straight continuation), but I'm not sure I like it more. For one thing, getting the 5 different endings is pretty tedious because it's just based on arbitrarily doing more or less in the point-and-click adventure segment. Overall I find this duology really interesting though as stories that really, really, really do not romanticize mental illness.

If you're wondering about the title, it's about wanting to be free from your physical body but still be the same person -- like milk outside a bag of milk. But it also just references how the first game is first-person from the girl's perspective, and this one is more VN-style looking at her from the outside.

The first game I truly finished this year is Resident Evil 8: Village.

I'm currently going through it again on NG+. Having the RE4 Style Inventory + a new Merchant was nice addition. Tracking down all of the missed items and etc. lead to find treasures I missed, along with meeting the remaining cooking recipe conditions on the second time through.

The main village is where things can be missed the easiest, since the main areas outside of the buildings do not have the *exploring* and *searched* designation to tell you you've found every single item.

Item and ammo crafting is a nice addition too. Unlike RE4, enemies don't generally drop ammo, as money or treasures are their primary drop types when defeated, so the crafting system can at times fill these gaps when necessary.

Young Souls (PC)

When I was looking into how much TMNT sucked last year, I was told that this was a better alternative. And it is. It's not without its flaws, but it's a rather enjoyable game that plays just right and it's got a nice story too. I'm actually glad the plot didn't go down the usual cliches. It's war basically and the game manages to find a balance between "War is evil and people die." and "Let's beat up everybody for peace and justice."

I recommend you play this game on the hard setting (as mentioned in the game to be the way the devs intended). The combat isn't that deep but the options are nice. One thing you'll have to get used to pretty fast is the parry system. And btw if you hate parrying that's fine too but you should probably play on "balanced" mode to save your sanity. One thing to note is that this game is not a roguelike so the game has a definite end or rather a definite path you should follow depending on exp points accumulated. This also means that the game doesn't outstay its welcome and ends just when things start to get stale.

The few flaws in this game are just nitpicks. Design decisions mainly probably remnants of what the game was intended to be. For example, there are explorable places in town but you only really need the 1 or 2 spots. Checkpoints line every room including treasure rooms...places you'll drop by to get the big loot and never come back again. So if that were the case why not just put the treasure in the boss room when the fight is over. Why can I teleport here? It's not like I can backtrack either. Rapid clicking minigames tied to extra stat growth. And then there's the ITEM GET screen popping up in your face if you've picked something up the first time. But it keeps happening even as you spend those resources.

Apart from that, one thing I will say is the game kind of started faltering in terms of balance but it ends before you can really do anything about it and with no NG+ I wonder about the weapon system sometimes. Ya see, you get your 3 basic stats (str, def, special) but. Every weapon has their own attack stats. So, in the end you'll just gun for the weapons with the highest attack like why even have stats at all? There's a game-spanning sidequest that has you collecting 4 Legendary Weapons. The first and last one are enough of a dealbreaker to carry you throughout the game early and late respectively as long as you upgrade them to the max and you will want to because resources are scarce despite encouraging crafting and grinding in this game. The fact that those gamebreaking weapons can carry you roughly 3/4s of the game questions why collect weapons at all.

Anyways that's it. My first true good game of the year. Very solid and I hope people give it some love it only has Very Positive reviews on Steam right now.

I played Young Souls last year and didn't bother to finish it. I like my beat 'em ups to be lean, and Young Souls was bloated with a bunch of stuff I felt had little to no value. The actual gameplay wasn't anything special to me, so I didn't feel motivated to trudge through it all.

Offspring Fling (Steam)

Wow I've had this game in my library for a long time! It's a very cute puzzle platformer, which is not a genre I particularly like so I'm not sure why I keep playing them. The puzzles were pretty easy and the levels that required good timing with platforming were surprisingly hard (probably because I was using a joystick instead of dpad). There are more levels if you beat the record time for each stage but uh, no thanks.

I do want a plushie of the main character though. EXTREMELY cute and huggable looking.

Prodigal (PC)

I have plenty of nostalgia for the top-down action-adventure game, especially those meant to emulate GB/GBC titles. After going through the fantastic Wirewalk last year, I ended up buying Prodigal in the fall. It is definitely a meaty game. There's plenty of dungeons, both required and optional, and returning to them after acquiring more gear can open them up more rooms/puzzles/treasures. Because the game has you do a ton of backtracking through its small world, the non-dungeon stuff gets pretty stale, but this game was pretty great. I'm still doing some post-game stuff, of which there appears to be a lot.

Mega Man 2 (NES)
The classic Mega Man games were some of the first video games I ever played as a kid, but because I was in fact a dumb kid that was very bad at them, I never actually finished any. And as the years have gone on and my tastes as a gamer have changed quite a bit, I never really bothered to go back to them. Well, no more. This year I'm determined to beat... At least some of them in between other stuff I want to do. Starting with 2, since it was easily the one I banged my head against the most in those formative years.

It's great. Everyone knows that. That's my review.

Hollow Knight (Switch)
I did only get the first ending, but for me that's good enough to consider it beaten. I saw most of the game (got 89%) and have 30 hours in it. I can always opt to do the rest later if I want to challenge myself.

Really great Metroidvania game. There is not much wrong with it. Tight controls giving you lots of options to fight and traverse. Amazing music. An enormous amount of places, characters and items to discover. Lots of boss fights. Lore. Atmosphere. The only small gripes I had were slightly too sparse bench placement (which makes backtracking a bit repetitive) and some boss battles which I thought were more annoying hard than fun hard. Getting the final nail upgrade, Unbreakable Strength and Quick Slash helped a lot in the end, I could basically facetank stuff and hit repeatedly to win a few fights.

Nevertheless, what a good game. It took me so many years to get into it, but now I've finally experienced this gem.

Mega Man 3 (NES)
So, I mentioned I was terrible at these games as a kid. I'm still not very good, for whatever reason. I've beaten much harder games with much more ease, but something about classic Mega Man just doesn't agree with me, I guess. I ended up really hoarding E-Tanks without meaning to in this one, though - maybe that was part of my problem.

Anyway, 3 is also great and everyone also knows that.

Axiom Verge 2 (PS5)
Eh...
I think "mixed bag" may be too generous for this one, as it stepped on my genre peeves several too many times. When it worked, it was a fun enough Metroidvania to explore. When I couldn't figure out where to go next, I hated it. The combat isn't very good and the gameplay has neat ideas more than it has good implementations. I was trying to gather collectibles for a bit after the final boss, but I don't think I want to anymore.

Well, it's certainly raw. Nothing here even feels all that difficult so much as it is annoying. Basic enemies are annoying, Ice Man's stage is annoying, some of the glitches are annoying... There's just a lot of frustration here that's not present in future games. Still fun, though.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon

Good game, got better once I learned what the DSS system was. Wish the things were easier to get. Two cards you can't even get until you massively grind after beating the game. That's a lot of moves that people won't ever see. It's not like SotN where you would never know what you are missing because the game has giant '???' for the missing items.

However, the map layout was tedious at times and the middle section of the game drug on a while. Also Dracula was tough....luckily I chose the right cards to grind. Did not enjoy the grinding.

Overall, if there was less grinding and some sections of the map were less tedious the game would have been a lot better. It's no SotN/AoS/DoS/OOE, but still fun. Music was decent too.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair (Steam)

This is a pretty fun 2D platformer, another DKC-like. The goal of the game is to finish one extra-long level (the Impossible Lair) with multiple bosses, and you can challenge that level at any time. Each bee you rescue from the other stages gives you an extra hit on the Impossible Lair, up to 48 + the 1 hit you get normally.

I needed all of them! I mean, I feel like I could have just ground it out until I could do it without. I've done harder levels in platformers, like idk White Palace. But it was still tricky and the other levels were fun so I went and got all the bees anyway, which makes the whole thing substantially easier.

Compared to Kaze and the Wild Masks I'm not sure which is the better DKC-like. Initially I would have said Kaze but I spent like 18 hours on YL, not sure I'd have been game to play Kaze that long. They're both good, in any case.

...Incidentally, 100%ing this game means beating the Impossible Lair without any bees and uh, I'll pass on that one.

The King of Fighters XI (PS2)
I'm generally not someone to mark a fighting game as beaten after one arcade clear but..... whatever, it'll be a case-by-case basis. As it's an old fighting game, there's not much to the single-player other than arcade and a few special modes, and I don't feel all that compelled to keep playing arcade because that final boss is ridiculous. Like 80% of his moves is spamming projectiles and if you don't have fighting game prowess, he is so hard to approach. You can just tell he was designed to eat up quarters in the worst possible ways.

On another note, I didn't realize that the sub-final boss is actually a guy. He looks super-effeminate and has the kind of hips you'd see on female characters. But I read that he was originally intended to be a female...but the devs were like lol let's make him a guy anyways for androgyny reasons.

I beat both Kaze and Impossible Lair within the past two years. I think that Kaze is a better game but Impossible Lair better resembles a DKC game and for good reason too since Playtonic was founded by former Rare members.

I would also argue that Kaze and Impossible Lair are both better DKC and overall games than the Retro Studios games, though they too are great games.

Fuga: Melodies of Steel (XB1)

Yet another Game Pass game that I simply wanted to try out thinking I would bounce off of it but ended up getting sucked in. I skipped the majority of the story stuff since that wasn't interesting, but I got really into the management and tactics, even with the former being underbaked nonsense.

Pokemon Emerald (GBA)
Technically, in that I defeated the Champion, but it feels a bit like a cheap shot. I bought this game in 2008 and played up through the seventh gym, but stopped abruptly as I often do with games. My team wasn't very good anyway - mostly Pokemon that I found cute or amusing that I had leveled to a point where they could take on the trainers in the mid-late game. However, I'd long-since transferred my team up through the generations, leaving me with utility Pokemon that last year I used to get the Regis for my HOME living dex. I recently found out that at this point in the game I could get Rayquaza, so I used my Master Ball on it and basically used it to solo the rest of the game (with some help from a Pikachu and Wailord). Now to get Groudon, Kyogre and Latias so I can restart the game and play it for real.

Mega Man 4 (NES)
Either I'm finally getting a little better or this is the easiest of the first 4 MM games.

Think my ranking so far is 2 >= 4 > 3 > 1.

Nobody Saves the World: Impossible Dungeon (update) (PC)
This one's a bit tricky to define since it doesn't even add any achievements, but I got the new form, mastered it, and finished the little storyline with the dungeon. I think it's a fun addition, a series of random areas that you have to sprint through to add to an ongoing timer, like a racing game with checkpoints except in the ARPG format. Now I'll sit back and prepare myself for more of Stranger of Paradise's new ideas...

Yeah it is (I still love MM4). Sure it helps that you've played the other 3 now, but MM4's has a few trivial bosses and the non-trivial ones are very predictable. That plus Mega Buster and imo easier platforming in general makes it definitely easier.

5 and 6 won't get much tougher, though!

Chinatown Detective Agency (XB1)

A pretty cool adventure game in both the individual cases and overarching narrative. You at one point pick a client that you will get around half the game's cases for, and I felt I made a great choice as both the cases within that client and the assistant I gained from them were some of the strongest elements of the game for me.

I do regret not doing this on PC where I have access to it both in Game Pass and Humble's app. It doesn't solve the obnoxious traveling, but I try to always play point and click adventures on PC because the controls feel far more natural there, and going in and out of menus was a bit of a pain not to mention having to manually enter puzzle solutions. Speaking of which, puzzles were probably the worst part of the game for me because the majority of the puzzles are unsolvable and ask you to search for the necessary info to come up with the solution on the internet. Maybe some like that, but I found it to be super lame.

AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative (PS4)

First half of the game was on par with Virtue's Last Reward while the second half was a major letdown. This is partly due to Ryuki being a much more interesting protagonist than Mizuki IMO, but the bigger problem was that the payoffs toward the game didn't have the impact I was hoping for.

Overall, a good game/story. But it's leagues behind VLR, 999, and even Somnium Files 1.

I did only get the first ending, but for me that's good enough to consider it beaten.

No way. You gotta beat The Radiance. Trust me, it's worth it.

PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate (PC)

Kind of weird that I have replayed these games many times, but this is the first time I went through the PC version despite having bought it on Steam in like 2016.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII: Reunion (PC)
Crisis Core is a weird game. It's focused intently on the subject of trauma and disillusionment, and for most of its runtime it's simply impossible to take seriously. It's goofy, it's wannabe-cool, and there are very valid complaints that could be made about inserting it into the FF7 timeline. But how is the gameplay? It's a rather basic instance-based ARPG brawler. Think something like the handheld Kingdom Hearts games. There are a bunch of minigames for their own sake, which is at least one thing it shares with FF7. This new version takes advantage of non-PSP controls and a few new additions to make combat snappier, and it all feels and looks pretty good. It does however have a strange double life. The bulk of the gameplay and almost all of the difficulty lies in side-missions accessed from save points, like Blitzball in FFX. If you do some of this, you will become a walking force of destruction to everything in the story. On the other hand, this mode alone offers quite a bit of meat if you like this particular combination of RPG management and action combat, so it's hard to resist choosing it. All in all, it's a unique snapshot of a bygone era that's still pretty fun in its own right.
