This. I was gonna say. It looks weird seeing english in Japan so long ago. I wouldn't have expected them to bother with it til much later . I thought in 1889 they were still very proud of their own culture and not so much foreigners

Yes. They sold cards for some Japanese playing card game. It wasn't anything like poker or the like. It was some local thing

Hanafuda cards. Supposedly, they were big with the Yakuza back then.
